We decided to have dinner at one of the top rated restaurants in Vancouver on Thanksgiving weekend so we made reservations and stepped int one of the finest meals we've ever had. What an amazing meal we had, starting with the little basket of fresh baked breads at the start through appetizers and into the main meal. The food grad... More

This restaurant had been on my list for a while. My husband and I were disappointed by the lack of attention to detail. The tables were very close and could hear the conversations from adjacent tables. Waiters and servers reached over you not around you, water spilled over the table with being poured, etc. Main course $40 each, desserts were... More

Busy place. I happened to arrive while happy hour was still on so really good prices on food and drink. I got the last seat at the bar. Everyone was very attentive. I liked that the place was busy and buzzing. I ordered the snails and sweetbreads. Not together! Separate dishes. Both were fantastic as was the cocktail and glass... More

Although this is an expensive place to eat, it is comparable with other fine dining venues in this expensive city. And the food is excellent. Reasonable portion size, the menu is creative, but with the staple classics still there. The steak is just fabulous. Tender, flavoursome and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Terrific staff, extensiv ewine list for those who know... More

We came here for a pre dinner drink and got a cosy spot by the bar which was great as we got some good recommendations on breakfast spots from the barman! Make sure you try and Avocado Cocktail!

this place is my go to restaurant for any special occasion. it has the most amazing service and incredible food. it manages to balance being creative with classic inspiration and remains delicious throughout. the oysters, duck, steak and every cocktail in the menu are worth trying... maybe not all at once though.

High end establishment with a more casual attitude. Service was great. Ambiance was good. All the cocktails tried were incredible spirit-forward tasty mixtures. We had ling cod, duck and pork (with a big emphasis on the poached apple side!), all which where phenomenal. Higher end prices, but not a disappointing night out.

A cosy restaurant with French-inspired dishes at the heart of Gastown. The bread was excellent. I couldn't stop eating. Both starters we ordered were delicious, in particular, the baked oysters. As for the mains, the smoked duck was really yummy. The lingcod was good too. Dishes are, however, very rich. Can't believe we didn't have room for dessert.

I've been there twice for happy hour and the food has been the best I've had in Vancouver in a long time. Can't wait to go back for dinner. Besides great food during happy hour (1/2 off most things), the wine is actually good wine (Poplar Grove for the white), not lower quality wine like most places use as their... More

We originally had to cancel our reservation because of flight changes and travel cancellations. But out of sheer chance we were able to re-book at L'Abattoir during a recent trip. This is the most amazing restaurant I've eaten at in Vancouver. While I have my regular favourites that I always go to, it was great to finally eat at L'Abattoir.... More

Description
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and Owner / Operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and Bar Manager Thor Paulson's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

Staying in Gastown

Neighbourhood Profile
Gastown
A visit to Gastown is like turning back the clock and stepping into a bygone era. With the distinction of being Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, the many plaques that stud the cobbled streets of Gastown tell the story of its colorful past, giving Vancouver's history a more lively presence here than anywhere else. Having been originally founded around a popular worker's saloon, it's no wonder that today some of Vancouver's best micro-breweries, creative cocktail joints, and corner bars can be found in this area. Classical charm suffuses its many vintage boutiques and the brick-built structures that an army of creative professionals call home.
