Pure joy....My husband and I stay at this delightful cosy friendly hotel anytime we visit Vancouver.
From the minute you make your reservation directly with the hotel, you feel like family. The front desk staff, Adrian and the many other kind helpful people to Connie our housekeeper..we are part of the family.
Much appreciation to the staff member who put a table top fridge in our room as soon as we asked for it.
The menu is excellent, everything from their delicious lentil stew to the very yummy seared tuna salad is first class
The access to both downtown as well as the ocean and wonderful sea wall walks is too good to be true
This is a reasonably priced and perfect place to stay for all ages. I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates antiquity high standards and modern comfort. Thank you Sylvia, we will return

Although I live in Vancouver, I stayed at the Sylvia April 27-30, 2020 as a mid-pandemic writing retreat. There were few people staying at the hotel at the time, and the wonderful staff upgraded me to a sixth floor corner suite with a living room, kitchen and fantastic view of English Bay (great for watching sunsets!). It was easy to stay physically distanced, protocols were set up for taking turns using the elevator, and hand sanitizor was available in the lobby. The restaurant and bar were not open at the time, due to pandemic restrictions, but having a kitchen in my suite made preparing my own food easy, plus there were many restaurants in the neighbourhood open for take-out. I was able to visit the beach and Stanley Park (while staying distant from others), and even on rainy gray days, the clouds opened in time for a full sunset show. The relaxing getaway was just what I needed to mentally recalibrate (and get some writing done). I look forward to returning for a drink when the pub reopens! I recommend the 6th, 7th and 8th floors for the best views over top the Beach Ave trees (when the restaurant and pub is open, there is also a great lower view from there, looking out under the tree branches)

A stay at the Sylvia is like slipping into a pair of those cosy old slippers that have always been your favourites. Ocean views, great food, great location, reasonable rates, heritage, and friendly staff trying to do their best to mitigate questionable government edicts to serve you well. Forever our "go to" place to stay in Van.

We usually go to the Sylvia because the food, service, and ambiance are consistently excellent. It is a spot that I often recommend to friends and out-of-town guests. On a sunny afternoon my wife and I stopped for a snack/beer on the patio. We ordered from the Happy Hour menu that was prominently displayed on all the tables. When the bill came I noted (after paying) that the charges were higher than the menu stated. The waitress said that the Happy Hour prices were suspended by the owner during this COVID restrictive period.
I do understand why the lower price period was suspended and I sympathize with all workers and owners of restaurants and bars affected by this pandemic. What I do not understand is why the owner persists in displaying deceptive price lists during the pandemic.

So sorry about your recent visit and the menu issue. We should have been more on top of making sure the menus were out of the black folding display. I deeply apologize for the confusion.
Please come back and give us another try...Happy Hour has in fact been re-instated this week and the menus are once again in the black display menus.
When you do visit, please ask for me...I would love to meet you and take care of some items for you.
Sincerely,
Ryan Holmberg

We have stayed at the Sylvia for over 25 years & have always enjoyed the family casual atmosphere & the friendly staff that make our stay so enjoyable. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case during our last stay. I have even listed many happy reviews for the Sylvia from previous stays.
For 15 years we were frequent stayers & they would offer me free parking on top of other discounts & locals offerings.
It seems that after Covid our history has been erased & we are all starting from scratch.
We’ve stayed there 3 times since Covid ended & I haven’t asked for free parking.
This weekend we got their last room with a kitchen & paid the web site price & I asked if they could extend free parking. The phone reservations agent said “sure”. Upon checking in the front desk agent said that there was nothing on the file & that there is no free parking & I asked her if she thought I was lying. So I politely asked again & said that the agent in the phone had said that they could offer free parking.
After some very uncomfortable minutes of feeling like I was a causing trouble the phone agent came forward & said she thought I was joking & there is no free parking. I’m not sure what sort of joke asking for free parking is, despite it only being $20 I thought I felt that they had made a concession for us staying regularly again. The front desk agent was very officious & was firmly holding her ground despite knowing that the phone agent had said yes but was apparently joking.
This left a sour taste for the rest of our stay & I must say that the business only nature of the experience was not at all what I’ve experienced at the Sylvia for decades. I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

We had a delightful casual dinner with top notch service at the Sylvia Hotel. Our waiter was charming and efficient. It was the best service received in a long time and the food was tasty and moderately priced.

Had an enjoyable time! So many ethnic restaurants, had appys at one, main at another desserts at another. Every meal was a tantalizing adventure . Our last meal was a fabulous brunch at the Sylvia, Fabulous!
The location was absolutely stunning ! Watched the sunset each evening from the beach, people watched and doggie watched sitting on logs on the beach. So fascinating and relaxing. People were so friendly and courteous, Remarkable little getaway with so much to offer, from peaceful relaxation to gastric excellence, fabulous outdoor beach walkways, stunning sunsets and all affordable. What a delightful getaway !!!

Had fish and chips for lunch today at the Sylvia. The fish was cooked to perfection and served while still hot. As usual the staff were excellent and the ocean view was superb. Many thanks.

The best thing about Sylvia's Restaurant and Lounge is its location looking out onto English Bay. Since we had a dog and children with us, we greatly appreciated the picnic tables set up out front which allowed us to have a relaxed meal.
The food was very good and the service was excellent.

As I type this, we have the most beautiful sunset occurring over our beaches here on English Bay!
Thanks for your recent visit and we are glad to hear that our extended patio was able to cater to your whole family!

My wife who suffers from MS and has some mobility problems found that the Hotel was the perfect location for short walks on the beach area where she could easily find a bench when tiring and watch all of the folks going about their activities, walkers, runners, boarders, cyclists, etc. Many restuarants within a short walking distance of the Hotel, Stanley Park on your doorstep, Gastown, Robson St Shopping, Conference Centres all within close proximity. We dined in the Hotel restuarant and Lounge, Service was excellent and food selections were more than adequate, however no Liver on the menu was a disappointment !!! All in All a satisfying experience.

I have stayed at the Sylvia off and on for many years and have booked oversees friends and family who have visited. All have been more than happy with their stay.
On a recent visit with friends we were given a suite that was not suitable for 4 adults. Even though they were fully booked they managed to juggle rooms and compensated us with a reduced rate and breakfast vouchers. Breakfast is consistently excellent however dinner in the restaurant was very disappointing, to say the least. A mushroom risotto purportedly had wild mushrooms peas and asparagus. The few mushrooms appeared to be tinned, the asparagus was no where to be seen, the rice was not risotto rice and resulted in a mountain of heavy sludge, inedible. The other meal ordered was a Moroccan Stew, which was watery and tasteless. Thankfully the nann bread provided the main substance of this meal.
I will not give up on the Sylvia, I love it, but may not risk dining in the evening.

Told us we were lucky they had a table because everything was always booked - only to seat us in the middle of at least 20 empty tables which no one sat at throughout the duration of our meal. Server brought us a carafe of wine with not one but TWO bugs swimming in them. One of the wine glasses was chipped and could have cut us if we hadn’t noticed. Ordered a butternut squash ravioli from the menu - was served a mushroom ravioli. Tried to grab server’s attention to get it changed, but it was 20 mins before someone spoke to us, by which time I had taken a few bites. They then took the wrong ravioli back and came back saying that they didn’t have butternut squash ravioli, even though they billed us for butternut squash ravioli. We asked for hot sauce, never got any. One star for one of the fish dishes which was good.

Excellent food. The waitresses were overwhelmed with the number of people but served very nice and quick. The Fish and chips were awesome! The tuna salad was awesome! Hamburger comes in medium size with very tasty french fried potatoes.

The waitress was very accommodating to our preferred Vegan choices for an early lunch.
We had a lovely Vegan Spiced Pepper Soup & shared a Beyond Meat Burger. The burger was nicely divided in the kitchen with ample piping hot fries for both, served in a nice stainless steel tall dish. We ordered their Moroccan Lentil Stew $19 & Chocolate Shaver Cake as a takeaway for our in-house suite for later. We had a beautiful view of English Bay & Beach from the dining room, same menu in lounge apparently. Definitely will be back when we stay again.

I was staying at the Sylvia Hotel for a week and during the course of my stay I used the restaurant for a few breakfasts, a supper and a couple of lunches. The breakfast service was attentive, friendly and efficient and the food very good. I ordered the spinach and tomato omelette twice and poached eggs once and each was excellent and served piping hot. The endless coffee pot is great. My companions raved about the banana pancakes and the eggs benedict. Lunch and supper were just as good. The view of the beach is wonderful and the ambiance friendly and relaxed. No loud "background" music during the day so you don't have to shout to be heard. This is a place equally pleasant for sharing a meal with friends or dining solo. My favourite table was a booth on the lower level directly facing the window.
