About
OPEN FOR LUNCH ONLY NOV 28th DEC 29th Our story began in Strasbourg, France where Chef/Owner Michel Jacob was born. As a young apprentice under Chef J.Letzer of Zimmer, Michel and his fellow chefs were often taken to restaurants for firsthand experience of the local dining scene. One day, Chef Letzer took the entire brigade to Restaurant Au Crocodile. The chefs were served a meal “like nothing they had ever seen or tasted before”. It was at that meal that Michel Jacob set the standards for his own culinary path. Chef E.Jung became his ‘inspirational culinary mentor’. In 1984, Chef Michel opened Le Crocodile in Vancouver. Initially located on Homer Street, we quickly gained attention and had to move to our larger current location. Thirty years later, with some of the original staff still here, we are grateful to still remain in Vancouver as one of the city’s most acclaimed and visited restaurant.

What a delightful French restaurant close to downtown Vancouver!
It has skillfully hit the sweet spot to seamlessly welcome repeat locals with upscale tourists. The food is exquisite as is the wine list. The decor is a delightful blend of French with a Danish modern twist - the walls are paneled with light wood making the dining room airy and relaxing (please note the dining room picture on their website as of this writing is of their previous location).
The service and food could not be better! There is a very modest upcharge for bread service - the accompanying butter is transcendent - you MUST ask for this!
We had many awesome dishes, but I must highlight the Foie Gras Brulee appetizer. Just incredible! It is a lightly chilled Foie Gras mousse served in a glass jar; it had been flamed to achieve the brulee crust just prior to service. Perfect slices of warm brioche accompany it. It is easy to share but it is rich. I actually saved 1/2 of it and had the remainder for dessert - it's that good.
We saw at least one alcove that could seat (maybe up to 8?) with a curtain that could cordon that off to create a private dining room.
An absolute must French Try!
Bon appetite!

First, only the reviews and photos here since Fall 2024 are relevant since the restaurant was taken over by chef Rob Feenie last summer, with new menu and interior. Our dinner for two was excellent. The decor is beautiful and set up (eg space between tables) was excellent for us; for such a special dinner, I would not want to sit near a large loud group. The service was outstanding, including the sommelier. The menu is classic French with some twists. I'm attaching photos of the menu with prices since the prices are unfortunately not provided on their website. We had escargot, seared fois gras, dover sole (deboned at table), beef Wellington (a special not on regular menu) and profiteroles. All were beautifully cooked and presented The fois gras was incredible, and profiteroles the best ever. The other dishes were excellent, and I feel privileged to be able to eat there, but they were different than what I had expected, probably due to the "twist" by the chef. For example, I would have wanted more flavour in the dover sole sauce, and less sauce on the beef Wellington. Overall, a wonderful place for a very special meal.

A true World Class French Restaurant! I dined here 20 years ago and the memory was strong. When we took a cruise this year I made reservations well in advance and it fulfilled all my hopes and memories. The evening started with a wait in the Bar which was a delight. The two bartenders could easily be sommeliers and the wine they recommended at $106 was a white burgundy that was spectacular! Things only got better when we were seated. The service was prompt, cordial and very knowledgeable. Two bottles of a great wine and dinner for $400 was worth every dollar. If you get to Vancouver don't miss Le Crocodile. It is under new management and will only be better moving forward.

The two of us, spent over $1000 for dinner. There were several disappointments in both quality of service, presentation and preparation of our food. Clearly Le Crocodile V2.0 has been found entirely wanting.
I'm resisting turning this review into a book and will just focus on a couple of points. My girlfriend’s meat was served to her medium rare instead of medium as she asked, our individual dishes for oysters on the half shell were not served together and we ended up picking from each others plate, The steak Tartar, although tasty, the presentation was bland and uninspiring, not even a quail’s egg on top to brighten it up. Our Monte Cristo's were served lukewarm (they went back), our table was not cleaned of breadcrumbs, and I couldn't even get something as simple as a replacement napkin for our $1000 meal.
My napkin dropped to the floor; they picked it up but neglected to give me a new one. I waited the entire evening to see if they would, but nope!
I remember a time, many years ago... if you left your table, upon your return, you would find your napkin neatly folded like a hat on your table, ah..... the good old days.
I was hoping for a better all-round experience under new management, with better service and a fresh new menu. Sadly, it seems that even though the food is still good, the furnishings are different, its the same old Le Croc's that does not quite live up to its gravitas.

As someone who has dined at many fine establishments in Vancouver and abroad, I had high expectations for my visit, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet them.
Upon arrival, my son and I were left waiting at the reception for at least two minutes while the hostess was focused on the screen. She did not acknowledge us at any point, and when I said, "Excuse me," she explained that she thought I was being seated by someone else. However, there was no one else around to assist us, and I was wearing a long winter coat that needed to be checked in, which made the oversight more noticeable.
As for the food, it was fine, and the price point was reasonable. However, the service felt neither polished nor professional, which was disappointing. For example, spoons were given to the other diners (for an appetizer that we all ordered) yet mine was missing. When I asked for one, the server seemed surprised...why then were the others given a spoon?
Perhaps my expectations are high, but I often dine at top-tier restaurants around the world and locally, and the level of service I experienced at Le Crocodile by Feenie did not compare favorably.

As frequent and regular customers of le Crocodile in each of its earlier formats we were persuaded to try the latest, “by Rob Feenie” version. Our reservation was handled efficiently and, as in the past, the reception was extremely warm.
The décor has changed and no longer reflects the traditional French characteristics - it might however appeal more to a younger generation rather than to this traditionalist. Service was efficient but we were disappointed by the absence of the class and elegance which were hallmarks of the previous versions.
The menu and wine list are much shorter than earlier – not necessarily negative - selections are less but decision-making is easier. To start, I had oysters which were tasty, full, fresh and enjoyable, my wife had the endive salad which she enjoyed. Perhaps we should have stopped there!
For our main course sweetbreads was my choice and Dover sole, my wife’s. Both items had long been favourites of ours at le Crocodile. The sweetbreads were offered as a “starter” and, since I was told I could have them as my main course, that was my choice. They arrived, two starters in a single pile, with no accompaniments except for a few wilted spinach leaves. The presentation was crude, and unappealing - neither elegant nor classical. They were nicely cooked and tender but were quite tasteless and overwhelmed by the port wine sauce. My wife was disappointed by the Dover sole, neither the texture nor the flavour were as in the past.
Unfortunately, the proprietor left the restaurant early without making his “usual rounds” of his customers.
Le Crocodile has changed indeed but, in my opinion, not for the better. I wish Mr. Feenie success in his new venture but we will seek another venue for our special occasions.

Since Chef Rob Feenie has taken over Le Crocodile now called Le CROCODILE by ROB FEENIE, we loved the refurbished dining room with lighter painted walls & curtainless windows allowing more light & airiness. Thank you Chef Rob Feenie for taking up a notch, the classic French dishes with lighter sauces for the summer.
My friend sipped a Debut with Lillet, the aperitif tonic wine & I refreshed with a Hugo Spritz with St.Germain French elderflower liqueur while having an amuse bouche of white asparagus.
My appy of roasted frogs legs was exquisite with the light, garlic spinach sauce & my friend said her chilled watermelon & cucumber soup with prawn was a lovely experience.
My beautifully plated main of herb encrusted lamb saddle & my friend’s roasted poussin(spring chicken that is all white meat including the legs & thighs, were moist & perfectly cooked.
We both love chocolate so we chose both the white chocolate crème brûlée & profiterole filled with icecream & drizzled with warm chocolate sauce.
Thanks to Server Marco, Sandrine Ramousy & others whose welcome & shared knowledge augmented our superb culinary experience offered by Chef Rob Feenie his 1st Class Kitchen Team

I took my son to le crocodile for his birthday dinner as this restaurant was his favourite before but such disappointment this time, every thing has been changed now from decor to staff to dress cod for guests, more importantly our favourite dishes are no longer the same. Lobster tempura was garnished with oily vegetable , onion tarts was mushy with uncooked crust.and no seasoning only the fois gras was ok because it didn't need too much effort to prepare. I was feeling sorry for my son who was looking forward to this dinner for two weeks.

AMAZING! The service was professional and quick. Service staff were friendly and super attentive. They were extremely knowledgeable about the food and drink menu.
We were attending a Canucks game that evening - so we had our jerseys on. We did feel somewhat out of place but the staff made us feel as though we were sitting at home.
** side note - this city LOVES their Canucks!! **
The food! Amazing. The beef Wellington was cooked to perfection. The fois gras was delightful and my first time eating frogs legs was enjoyable. My husband had the 20oz steak and at one point referenced the old 96’er from the great outdoors lol If you are wanting a fine ining experience in Downtown Vancouver with excellent food, drink and service. It was excellent. 10/10 will go back

Make sure to plan ahead to get an earlier reservation, or you are eating late.
Excellent service, lots of staff. Refined food yet classy but casual ambiance. The three of us thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. We each had the froie gras, and then had escargot, beef tartare, duck breast, dover fish cut tableside. To finish off, we had their classic apple tart eith ice cream and special dessert of booze soaked cherries, with dark chocolate and whipped cream. Between us we made three additional reservations as their menu is varied and wanting to try more.

We have been here several times. My sister always brings us here when we visit her. There’s no place like it in the US. That’s because there’s no one like Michel Jacob in the US.
Last night was a special treat. We were treated to a five-course meal with Michel at helm and Sandrine at the front of the house. We watched the staff weave their way in and out of tables, pouring wine, listening and quietly answering questions. Our table was attended by Pierre, a most affable and sweet man. He paid particular attention to some people’s food allergies or intolerances. He teased my sister about her love for the Foie gras crème brûlée, which was the first course. That was heavenly.
Next, we were served a green salad with buffala and multicolored pickled beets. Then, came a pumpkin soup swirled with curry oil, crème fraiche and some pumpkin seeds. That was really tasty.
Our main was the perfectly grilled Haida Gwaii Halibut with lobster tempura anchored with some pasta and a lovely butter blanc. My sister chose the Beef Wellington with a plate of shoestring pomme frites.
The dessert was a dense chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and crumbled dehydrated raspberries on top, and a dollop of vanilla ice cream.
We were offered some Chablis and a French Merlot with our dinner. They both paired well with the food.

Took cocktail order then when came back were informed 2 hour limit and we already wasted 1 hour so we better order. Food was good but we were being rushed. Wine list was mostly 500-9000$ a bottle, 80-120$ a glass. There were very few if any good wine reasonable options. Told we ran out of time for dessert we would have to leave. Will never go back. Food was very good but being rushed and rushed out made the whole experience unpleasant. Would never come back. Felt like they don’t care.

Finding a restaurant with good food is fairly easy. To find a restaurant that has the combination of excellent food served by an amazing wait staff is like finding a rare gem. Le Crocodile is a perfect diamond. From the moment we were seated, our server Nina was extremely friendly and attentive, soon followed by Sara who recited the fabulous array of specials for the evening. Von Damme, the fantastic sommelier was the icing on the cake having assisted us in choosing an excellent wine, domaine Pellé, from the Loire Valley. Afterwards, she suggested some excellent after dinner drinks as well. The food, I would describe as top quality French cuisine, perfectly prepared and presented. The atmosphere of Le Crocodile being warm and inviting added to the experience. As true world travelers who sample the best places frequently, Chef/owner Michel Jacob has created one of our favorite restaurants. Thank you for an excellent experience.
