We went on a Saturday night with a reservation and it was packed. French/Tunisian food, which gave it a bit of an East Indian taste. Curry and cumin permeate the air, but more subtle than if you were in an Indian restaurant. Staff are attentive and friendly, and totally unpretentious. Nice neighbourhood place with good food. Unique menu with a... More

We were a party of 2, one ordered Tuna, the other ordered Duck. Except, the waiter showed up with 2 Tuna dinners. So, it had to go back to the kitchen. And, we had to wait some more. The food was good, but our experience there was not great.

Just so happens, a snow day and some perfectly timed cancellations= Win Day! Only when we arrive, it's still Dine Out Vancouver! Not to worry, we can still order mussels! Yah, no big loss there coupled with a lovely Viognier, fantastic as usual. Very attentive service with a lovely atmosphere makes for a lovely couples dining experience. This is a... More

We had a most wonderful dinner on a very busy Saturday night. I was fully expecting a wait and service to have issues. Not!!!! Absolutely Fantastic!!! The food was prepared to perfection and the service was over the top. I would expect this to be a rating for a much more acclaimed establishment but the staff knocked it out of... More

Have not had such appalling service in ages. The waitress essentially ignored us. Didn't bring bread or bother to check if we needed anything. We asked for water and no attention was paid to whether we wanted more. My friend finally got up and served us herself. The couscous dinners were mediocre, dry meat and almost tasteless. I've had decent... More

A short visit to Vancouver and Cartharge was a nice change from usual options. Nice cous cous dishes for sharing; must try the chicken and lamb dishes. Good selection of wine to pair! Mussel starters were nice; not quite as fresh and sweet tasting to what i am used to but cooked very well and nice use of north african... More

Have been to this cosy little resto many times and tasted almost everything on the menu. The dishes are created in the back by the owner chef- even the harissa is house made. Anything with lamb is delish. So is the seafood casserole in a thick spicy sauce. Lovely "French" desserts as well. Reasonably priced wine list by glass, half... More

I was Looking forward to a nice pre-Easter dinner with a good friend, so we decided on the Carthage cafe, a place I have always wanted to try. Excellent choice. My friend has, like other reviewers have said, had both good and bad experiences with this restaurant. This evening, it was wonderful. Servers Kim, Amy, and Janice did a fantastic... More

Staying in Commercial Drive

Neighbourhood Profile
Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, also called "The Drive," comprises of twelve sauntering blocks of modest and unfussy counter-culture. Straddling the line between sophisticated and unadorned, it is favoured by students, artists, writers, designers, and start-ups, and suffused throughout with a healthy off-beat counter-culture. The kind of neighbourhood which well-springs thought-revolutions and has the odd bit of self-aware graffiti, Commercial Drive has resisted gentrification in favor of continuing to build a thriving den of affordable multiculturalism. Once known as Vancouver's "Little Italy," it has also been the immigration point for Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Portuguese to the city. The resulting hodgepodge makes for poetry readings in espresso cafes, social debates in early-open bakeries, and eco-activism posters pinned up in the many multi-ethnic markets in the area. Commercial Drive is where you go to feel like a local, and if you have them, bring the kids – The Drive has a number of bookshops, toy stores, and attractions to get them involved too.
