Stopped here for a bite to eat before we went to the VCBW Beer Fest at the PNE grounds. Decent service and the price was good.
The patio is nice on a sunny day. The food was just ok. Service was ok as the place was busy. I had the tequila lime chicken salad. Just ok. Really small portion of chicken.
I'm not a big breakfast eater but when at a restaurant I almost always order French toast, and this is some of the best I've had!
We go here every few months with our son. He used to live near it, and now that he doesn't, we still like to go. The burgers and sandwiches are good. Their fries are REALLY good. I don't know what they do differently. But they...are awesome. Free refills on coffee and soft drinks. Today our server was really great. Happy to go back again in a few months!More
Not my first time at the Slocan and certainly not my last. This area of East Hastings is one of my favourite walks, and what better way to fuel up than filling up with 2 easy over eggs (done perfectly), ham and toast (that I...could not finish) and two fluffy substantial pancakes. The platter also comes with hash browns that I asked to be left off my plate, because I knew I would not be able to find the room. The coffee is regular, pour out of the pot, no recipe required and the orange juice is cold and pulpy and the right fluid to wash down a platterful of food. The service was fast, friendly but not pandering. The waitress checked on our satisfaction twice, just enough to let us know that she cared. The food is not gourmet ... it is just plain good. My friend agreed that her House Omelet with ham, mushrooms and cheddar cheese was just right. You may find may find more attractive and eclectic decor in other restaurants, and more exotic choices, but sometimes comfort food with good service is all it takes to make your day. At $14.99, the East Van Breakfast may seem pricey, but it was all the food I needed for one day.More
My friends enjoyed their fully loaded burgers. I had the fish and chips. It was good. It came with a soup that was a bit thin but nice to include. They feature 4 dollar pints. Popular local watering hole.
If you’ve read by blog long enough, you probably know that I’m always looking for a good breakfast. The problem is that I’m running out of breakfast joints that actually open up early (especially on the weekends). Brunch is fine… but who wants to wait...until 10-11am? Having to run errands on an early Saturday morning, I dropped by The Slocan, a diner located in my old East Vancouver haunts. The restaurant interior isn’t glamorous but seems steadfast in their East Van working-class roots. There’s a small bar area to the side with most of the room occupied by old school booths and the venerated waitress seemed to have a good rapport with her regular customers. I decided to pay homage to where I grew up and ordered the East Van Breakfast ($14.45) with an Orange Pekoe ($2.85). The breakfast platter comes with 2 pancakes, two eggs, hash, toast (I picked rye), and your choice of meats (I picked bacon). The breakfast was okay, the thin bacon slices were crispy and the yolks were runny while the pancakes were fairly standard. I wasn’t a huge fan of the hash brown potatoes as they lacked crispness. Overall, this is a suitable breakfast if you’re looking to carb up but nothing that really stands out.More
We've been here about 4 times over the past 3-4 years. A couple of times it's been really good, a couple times just okay. This time was an "okay" time. Lasagna was pretty good. Soup was nice, but needed a fair bit of salt. Caesar salad...was good. The place was not busy at all, but still our server didn't check on us often enough for water refills or for us to order another round of beers. Prices were fine. Could be a wee bit cleaner. At any rate, it's a good steady place for solid meal that will fill you up.More
After a busy morning vintage shopping and bargaining, the four of us wanted a simple meal in a welcoming neighbourhood. I had never been to the Slocan before, but I enjoy that part of East Hastings, so I gladly agreed to accompany the others. Stunningly...beautiful weather - so we sat out on the terrace. We all ordered the same dish - The Door Crasher - 2 eggs, your favourite meat (bacon, ham or sausage), hash browns and your choice of toast. Price is reduced for a non-meat breakfast. My over-easy eggs were done perfectly and the ham was great. I am extremely picky when it comes to hash browns; these were good - could have been browner and a little more done, but then again, I am very picky about my hash browns. Overall, we ate everything on our plates and enjoyed the whole simplicity of a familiar breakfast and the friendliness of our server. Just the right amount of attention. Next time I am in the neighbourhood, I will return.More
This little gem of a restaurant is amazing. We enjoyed our breakfast so much we went back the following weekend. The first time we had their Door Crasher which comes with two eggs any way, hashbrowns, toast, and you can chose with or without “meat”(bacon...or sausage). We had poached eggs that were done to perfection and came dry (not sitting in water you have to drain into a napkin). The sausages are not salty, hashbrowns are shaved and toast done perfectly. I love breakfast so it is always important to me that everything is cooked right and this restaurant does just that. On our second visit I had the egg sandwich that comes with tomatoes and avocado. Again, done perfectly. The meals are very large. The service is spectacular. There is also parking around back.More
My sisters both eat here regularly. I have now tried 5 times. Regular breakfast food. Service is fine. If you are looking for a place to go for a group this is the place as there is a variety of items to satisfy everyone. Solid...food not gourmet but good basic breakfast foods. Have had pancakes, eggs and meat, omelettes, Not disappointed.More
Believe it is just called "The Slocan", as I haven,t seen "restaurant" on any of their signage, website, etc for quite some time. Visited for breakfast a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised that the place was the same old joint that I...remember it being the last time visited over 7 years ago, have to visit more often. Had a very nice breakfast, service was great even though the place was very busy, had just enough time to enjoy the coffee and marvel at the painted particle board siding before the mains came out. Good quality ingredients an enjoyable breakfast. Great breakfast, worth a visit. Easy 20 min bus ride from downtown, one can walk to the PNE from The Slocan, probably about a 10 min walk at the most. If you drive lots of free street parking.More
Omelettes, Eggs Benedict and other breakfast staples are well-prepared. The service is very good. Very good value for breakfast.
