I've certainly had worse breakfast experiences but I continue to regret that we squandered an opportunity to have breakfast out at Smile, rather than Finch's or Nelson the Seagull or any number of other considerably better breakfast options in Vancouver's Gastown neighborhood. But, you never know until you try, right? I had the $6.95 meat/eggs/hashbrown/toast option; my companion had the... More

We were made to feel very welcome in this little diner. Our food was served quickly and with a smile.

Smile Diner has great food (we had both breakfast and chinese food items) which is served with a smile! Traveling from Saskatchewan, it felt like home to me as it is exactly like the Chinese restaurants that inhabit many small towns in our province. Wish we had one more opportunity to eat there before leaving!

I decided to try the Smile Diner one morning to get some idea on the type of breakfasts they offered, as the "old fashioned" decor of the restaurant looked interesting. The interior did not disappoint and it reminded me of diners in the '60s or '70s, complete with the counter seating. The menu appears to have a variety of western... More

I was in the neighborhood and an acquaintance mentioned that the Smile Diner served Chinese food. Much to my dismay I discovered that the diner's style of Chinese food was only suitable for Gwai Lo (Google for the uninitiated). So few restaurants now days offer liver and onions, guess what the Smile Diner does and for just $11.

My spouse and I enjoy diner breakfast spots and our breakfast at Smile Restaurant did not disappoint. The server was incredibly friendly, the breakfast was tasty and the coffee was decent. Old school booths and interesting holiday decorations rounded out the experience!

Still trying to figure out the decor (Michael Jackson/Sly Stallone/Chinese posters on the wall but the breakfast was good value with very good service and a great place to watch the parade of characters passing by on Pender.

Old school, odd décor, but good solid breakfast. We randomly stopped in and there was an older gentleman serving that was a trip. Fun to talk to but I don't think he works there all the time.

The Smile Restaurant has a unique atmosphere, which can only be described as Canadian/Chinese/80s/Sports - I loved the nod to the 80s, with the Duran Duran style sign outside and a large picture of Sly Stalone on the wall. Food wise it was average, although the milkshake was fantastic and the club sandwich was not bad at all. Service was... More

Staying in Gastown

Neighbourhood Profile
A visit to Gastown is like turning back the clock and stepping into a bygone era. With the distinction of being Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, the many plaques that stud the cobbled streets of Gastown tell the story of its colorful past, giving Vancouver's history a more lively presence here than anywhere else. Having been originally founded around a popular worker's saloon, it's no wonder that today some of Vancouver's best micro-breweries, creative cocktail joints, and corner bars can be found in this area. Classical charm suffuses its many vintage boutiques and the brick-built structures that an army of creative professionals call home.
