My husband and I recently spent 4 nights at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel and while walking around Oak Bay Village discovered Oaks Restaurant and Grill. We stopped and reviewed the menu, deciding to return later that evening for dinner. The historic building is the oldest in Oak Bay, having been built in 1912 and was originally the Oak Bay Grocery & Post Office. Over the years it's changed hands but still shows it's rustic age. It was really nice to read about the history, which is included with the extensive menu- there are options for everyone, including breakfast all day. Our server on the Friday night we were there was Brandie and she was excellent. My husband had the Original Burger with fries and I really enjoyed my half open faced tuna melt sandwich with a bowl of Butternut Squash soup. The restaurant was pretty full so we were seated at a table at the edge of the stairs going down to where the bar was/band plays but shortly after we sat down a table at the window opened up. Brandie said no problem for us to move and sitting by the window was perfect. The band playing was wonderful - we really enjoyed their "east coast" music and the patrons were tapping their feet and clapping. They were so good we decided after our meals to order a glass of wine (only $7.50 each) and stay for the rest of their set (which ended around 7:15pm). No cover charge either! We noticed Oaks serves afternoon tea - something we have always wanted to try. When we returned the next day at 11:30 am, we received the same wonderful table by the window (so nice to see everyone out walking). Sharon explained how the afternoon tea worked and we decided to order one full afternoon tea ($24.75) and one tea and scone ($7.75). For the scones we had one cheese and one raisin. The tray included scone, homemade jam, whipped cream, 3 finger sandwiches, mini quiche, mini sausage roll, mini lemon tart, assorted cakes, fruit and an English trifle. Several options for tea, we chose English Breakfast. Everything was delicious and we had more than enough to eat (this was our lunch). It was relaxing, just taking our time choosing different items to eat (the nanaimo bar was amazing!). Sharon offered us more hot water, and we were there an 1.5 hours. During that time, the restaurant was lined up, it's a very busy and popular place. Great service, wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. We will definitely return if we have the opportunity to visit the area again.

My husband and I chose to come here to try something new for a quick lunch while we were in the neighbourhood. The server seemed to be having a bad day and we almost felt we were being a burden. I was surprised to see such old decor, carpet and table at a restaurant along oak bay avenue. The food was good and the prices were fair. We both ordered the Turkey sandwich. The bread could have been toasted a little longer however the turkey was real and very fresh. The fries were really tasty, however my husband asked for a chipotle mayo to dip his fries into and we were disappointed in the up charge for pretty much plain mayo. I ordered the butternut squash soup as a side and it was VERY sweet. I had to add a lot of pepper and salt to counteract the sweetness. Over all a decent place to go for a simple lunch.

We haven’t been to the Oaks for some time but had the opportunity to go two days in a row and we were so pleased with everything about The Oaks. The first day we had scones and coffee. The raisin scones came with whipping cream and preserves. Delicious. The service was pleasant and efficient. Then the next day we went for Burger and Beer night. The restaurant was busy but service was again pleasant and efficient. It has been hard to find a burger that I could get my mouth around so I could taste all the ingredients at once. This burger was just what I have been looking for. My company said it was the best they have had in a long time. I had the French onion soup and it was delicious. The broth was rich and the soup was cheesy. Someone in the kitchen really knows what they are doing! In all a wonderful evening and we will definitely be back.

We went in for a final dinner at the end of our stay with my parents. They had very very loud music that night and they sat us right in front of the band. We asked to be moved but they said they could not accommodate even though no one was in two booths at the back and the staff told us ‘no one can reserve specific tables’. My burger was burnt and incredibly dry, and they didn’t bring us even basic things like water, ketchup, and mustard. It’s sad because my parents are comfortable on this place and go there all the time. Perhaps they are ageist? Or just completely incapable of addressing the needs of their elderly clients. I won’t go back ever and Oak Bay elderly folks, I recommend you avoid this place as well!

You get very good bang for your buck here -- nothing gourmet, just friendly service and large servings of food from a wide selection of choices on their menu. We like the daily specials which are offered for lunch and dinner times. The yorkshire pudding is HUGE when you order the Saturday roast beef special. For under $20, it's a treat but not heavy on the meat or flavour. Good place for family meals: tables are distanced and staff wear masks.

I didn't realize The Oaks Restaurant was the former Blethering Place. However, while we were just going to pop in for a coffee on a cold day, we stayed for breakfast. First, excellent Covid vaccination check at the door as well as ID. The tea was served in a warm china cup, the breakfast plate also warmed. The hash browns served with breakfast were beautifully cooked, no grease there. I ordered the vegetarian Benny, first class with the option of grilled tomatoes rather than hash browns, no extra charge. My husband favoured the English breakfast and once again, first class. Add to this home made marmalade for the toast and a delightful server; working on a cold, miserable day after the third snow storm in two weeks. The music playing kept us there for another pot of tea ... . All in all the place we'll frequent when in Oak Bay.

Driving around on a Friday evening, looking for a good place for dinner. We parked on Oak Bay Ave and this was the first eating place we saw, and it looked busy so in we went. I ordered my favourite…liver and onions, and the meat was so tender and delicious. It was possibly the best liver in a restaurant that I’ve ever had. For dessert, I decided to have the posted “Best Brownie in Victoria” and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Then, to top it off, Friday is music night and a 3 piece band started up to entertain us. Great food, great ambiance, and a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

If you are on the main street of the municipality of Oak Bay and you don't want Japanese, bistro, Italian deli, French, or other cuisines, then your best bet for just wanting traditional western food in a community environment is this restaurant. Lots of locals eat here, prices and portions are excellent value, service is very friendly and it has live music or dinner theatre on special evenings (at which time dinner is offered). It does traditional fare well like burgers, and full breakfasts although I found the butternut squash soup very bland on this outing. The building itself is historic and I sat in a very British section where photos/souvenirs of the Queen and her people adorned the walls. Family-friendly and wheelchair/stroller accessible. Gluten-free and vegetarian dishes available.

I visited The Oaks to have a late afternoon breakfast and I was sadly disappointed with the meal as it was presented. The Veggie Benny was something I've ordered there last year several times and it was excellent. This year it was a very different experience. The eggs were perfectly cooked but the mushrooms and spinach were so wet that water dripped down onto the plate when I cut into the English muffin. I asked if the mushrooms were canned and was told they never would use canned mushrooms. I didn't ask if they were frozen along with the spinach, which I suspect is the case. Both vegetables lacked taste and the muchrooms were slimy and tasteless. The counter that I sat at was sticky and the place has become very grotty. Not clean at all, was my impression. Time for a deep clean and a purge of the freezer maybe? Easy enough to get fresh spinach and white mushrooms and this would have improved the taste and my overall impression. I don't think I'll be returning.

Good for our group of 4 was flat ..cannot remember the other orders, but they were not good. My quesadillas think chicken but not sure…were tasteless other than some cream cheese mix. All the food was disappointing as we have had very good food over the past 6 months. House wine by half litre was too expensive, but the service and band was excellent! Keep bringing multi instrument bands not single vocalists as folks want a toe tappin experience not a single local vocal singer…musical instruments are the ticket! ..Nov. 12 was this visit…

This place was a disappointment. The server was unpleasant and rushed. The brownie which was advertised to be so good was huge but what it had in size it lacked completely in quality. It was the worst brownie I can remember having. I may go here again if with friends and they choose it. If it is better I am happy to change my review.

Been coming for years and never had bad service until today. The server was rude from the get-go and chastised me for not waiting at the door instead of joining my wife who came in before me. Then she seemed deliberately slow in serving us and we never did get the meal we ordered. After being there a whole hour we had to go to an appointment. When we told her, she never apologized but said "Do what you want you want". Asked for manager and she said "there isn't one" so we just left. Maybe she was having a bad day: but not a good advertisement for this place.

We stopped at this restaurant while spending the day in the oak Bay Area. It had a comfortable and friendly vibe. Brandie made us feel welcome and gave us good ideas about the menu for our late lunch. We enjoyed the sandwiches and yummy salad... fresh and good value. Brandie recommended the brownies and they were large and delicious ( Brandie heated them and they were moist in the middle ... best brownies ever) There were folks at the restaurant at the bar and in a corner, reading a paper and drinking coffee , another table having afternoon tea ...it’s a friendly hub of the community and the staff seemed caring. Dining area and bathroom was clean.
