Nothing else like it. It’s a real old skool diner. Simple menu. Good portions. Great prices. Excellent food. And a wonderful bakery to boot! I took home a dozen cookies.

I have been eating there off and on for many years as I live on Vancouver Island. Have never tasted anything better on the island to-date. It is worth visiting and eating in this cozy, people oriented diner. You won't be disappointed.
This is an excellent diner and bakery. I decided to try it after reading the Tripadvisor reviews as we prepared for a trip to Victoria. My wife and I prefer diner food on local and out of town trips; usually the food is great without...any pretentiousness for excessive costs. The delightfully old style Dutch Bakery did not disappoint. One day we had the very reasonable breakfast special and our meals were outstandingly prepared and enjoyable. Love the bottomless coffee. The service was friendly and efficient. Afterwards, we bought a selection from the bakery counter to eat later; every item was very good. We stopped by on another occasion to try out a few more goodies. Recommended!More
We loved the Chocolate Eclairs and Deer Legs (gluten free). The place is super cute and inviting and all of the options look amazing. We will be visiting this place a few times while we are vacationing in Victoria.
The bakery items we ordered were good. We enjoyed the sausage roll, beef pie, dutch donut but we're not that impressed with the mocha roll or porcupine pastry. 2/3 of the ladies working the bakery were downright cold to customers I guess because it is...quite busy.More
Our family of 6 sat down for a late lunch. We asked if the kitchen was still open. The waitress said it absolutely was and we still had lots of time. All six ordered drinks and meals. 5 minutes later the waitress returned and informed...us that the chef was not willing to make our meals as he stated the kitchen was closed. We were asked if we still wanted desserts. We did not. We will never be returning to the place again.More
I used to love this place. Not only for it's baked goods, but it's impeccable and friendly service. The pastries are expensive, but I'm happy to pay the price as it's a place that holds some nostalgia for my family. Having said that… Lately two...women who work in the front have made my experience less than. It's not great to be lectured in general, but to have to deal with it at an establishment you support, completely infantilizing. No idea what happened there. Also - for the front staff - please know what your products are. Being told that you don't make something anymore and not checking first, when I ordered the same exact thing one week before - is. just. lazy. The latter, from a woman of increasing years, who seemed to be short with everyone waiting to get served. SMH Brook - love your product but you need to have a chat with your staff.More
Breakfast menu is limited and unimpressive. The food was barely ok. Service was slow and our waitress was short with us and unfriendly.
This is a great spot for breakfast or lunch, or even coffee/tea and a tasty dessert. Super friendly service and delicious food at a reasonable price.
We love stopping in here when we visit Victoria. Not only is the food great but the atmosphere is a trip to the past. Delicious baked goods too. We usually come in for their daily lunch special and are always satisfied. I love the liver...sandwich - so tasty and it's been on the menu forever.More
This place seems to be very busy, even though the parking out front is limited to a few paid stalls. There is a bakery in the front and a restaurant in the back. I arrived after 3:00pm, so that could be the reason why there...was a very limited selection of items in the bakery display cases. Since I didn’t have much to choose from, I decided on a couple of Cheese Swirls and a Dutch Shortbread Cookie. The Cheese Swirls were very small, but they packed a really good flavour punch. They had a very distinct flavour and I could really taste the sharp Cheddar Cheese. I enjoyed it very much. The Dutch Shortbread Cookie was nice, light and tasty. It was slightly sweeter than a traditional Shortbread Cookie, but it was also tasty.More
We stopped in at the Dutch Bakery to enjoy pie and coffee! We had been told that this was a must stop and we were not disappointed. No surprise - there was a line up to get in!! Delicious baked good available at the front...of the shop. A diner towards the back. Parking definitely an issue. We had parked on a side street - paid parking - and were walking up and down Fort Street.More
All fresh made Baked goods. Pies, cakes, pastries, meat pies, tarts, breads. All delicious and they serve a great breakfast too. Only open until 4 so don't wait if you want something from the bakery. They sell out of lots of items. You will enjoy this place.
There are a number of good breakfast places in Victoria and the Dutch bakery is among the best. Breakfast special about $10...delicious. Prompt and friendly service. Well known to the local folks...most tables filled up quickly. We will be back to try the lunch specials...
The Dutch Bakery & Diner represents something of a rarity these days. It’s not too often you can come across a place that, 1) Has been open since 1956; and, 2) Has a retro throwback vibe, but doesn’t do so as a gimmick or because...it’s “out of touch.” Instead, the Dutch Bakery uses its warm and welcoming atmosphere to demonstrate the value of culinary tradition and the importance of consistency. The end result is a bakery that has, rightly so, become a Victoria landmark. Indeed, Victoria has a fluid and ever-changing foodie landscape. As such, it’s not too often you can come across an establishment that’s been serving Victorians for the better part of 64 years; in fact, that’s practically unheard of these days. I recall driving through “Old Town” in the summer of 2017 and seeing a restaurant sandwich board proudly advertising that they’d been “Serving Victoria since 2015.” Ol’ PookyCake couldn’t help but think, “Since 2015? Is that really something to be bragging about?” I guess it is these days. Obviously, then, the Dutch Bakery has been doing something right. I suspect a large part of the Dutch Bakery’s ongoing success has to do with consistency and quality of product. This establishment has been run by the Schaddelee family for three generations and while there have been modest updates to the dining space over the years, the recipes and attention to customer service have remained as they did in the 1950s. You can see this in the nice selection of pastries, cakes, cookies, meat pies and sausage rolls on offer at their bakery counter – many of which are based on recipes handed down by founder Kees Schaddelee. In short, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I wish more restaurants followed this simple rule. In any event, I was able to see and taste the Dutch Bakery’s commitment to quality in the nice selection of snack treats we’d procured. The chocolate raspberry tart was a perennial highlight for me. Its shell was firm, but not tough; the chocolate was of good quality and not overly sweet; and the raspberry mousse was light and fluffy. The cherry tart and hazelnut tart were also sinfully delicious. I should note, by way of conclusion, that I did not have an opportunity to sample the comfort food classics in the diner area; however, I did take note of its cozy décor and nod to history: The walls feature black and white photos of the Schaddelee family over time – I love this because it entrenches the family and Bakery firmly within Victoria’s culinary history. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: The Dutch Bakery & Diner is pretty fabulous. It’s fabulous because it acknowledges its history; it places emphasis on the customer experience; and it doesn’t change for the sake of being trendy. Instead, they focus on good food at a fair price and that’s what people want. Thumbs up! PS: If you found this review helpful in any way please consider hitting the "helpful" button!More
