After listening to friends & family rave about this restaurant for years we finally had a chance to eat there July 2/20. The decor, service & food were all amazing! There were 3 of us so we ordered 3 curries to share & they were all delicious. Portions were very generous, we couldn’t finish it all. Well worth a trip from Fredericton!

So we chose Thani for a date night while visiting Saint John, the restaurant was very busy on a Friday night and although it is sometimes better to keeps the kitchen out of sight just due to noise ,the aromas emanating from the kitchen wafted from the kitchen just added to the experience. Darrell our waiter wore some Patriots insignia which was a big plus to stat off with. He was a great waiter looking after all our needs. We started some Satays which were great, my wife had the chicken/shrimp Pad Thai I had the beef Tika which was the off menu feature that evening. All the food was delicious and proportions were more than adequate. Their menu is quite extensive featuring many dishes from India and Thailand. The restaurant certainly offers a nice atmosphere.

Morning Rob,
Thank you for the review. Happy to have added to your date night. There is a vibe in the restaurant you can feel when seated on the main level, but still a sense of having your own space. We will pass along your comments to Darrell. Hope to see you next time you visit.

We loved our evening at Thandi! The service team was friendly and so professional. We tried the specials that our server recommended and they were delicious, with hearty portion sizes. The Saag was a highlight! Our server presented the dishes so we could easily share them with perfectly cooked basmati and naan on the side. Thanks for providing such memorable meal experience during our stay in Saint John!

I went for dinner during a business trip to St. John. I was nicely greeted by the waitress and offered a table.
The weather was on the cold side (October) and I wanted a soup, server recommended the wonton soup. Soup was loaded with veggies (then good part) the wontons were not that great (as she sold them), thick dough, not silky like the ones I have tried before in Chinatown or other asian restaurants. Flavour was also meh, no kick from the supposedly shrimps, no nice surprise from herbs, spices.
For main I ordered the seafood stir-fry, it was a good portion with lots seafood and vegetables. Good charred flavour from the hot pan. The sad part was the amount of garlic, my good lord, are we on a vampire hunt? just having sooo much garlic on the dish killed any other flavours. Sadly as well, the rice was drown on the sauce, there was no rest from the overpowering garlic.
Maybe some of the seafood was off, but I got a bad stomach after this meal. Things were running liquify next morning, not a good sign!
I liked the idea of the restaurant with the mixed Indian/Asian fusion concept, if I ever go again, will need to look into other dishes for safety.
I think there is a lot more to try, I had a bad choice of dishes and bad luck with the seafood.

We went here for my wifes birthday,as it had good reviews and people rave about it. I'm not a curry person but I do enjoy a good stirfry. Service is very good and waitress was very attentive. I had the Naan nachos as a starter, it was very good. For my main I had the Chicken stir fry. Plate arrived looked good , nice aromas. Flavour was great. However here is the issue I have. 3/4 of the dish was rice, only a small portion was actually the vegetables and chicken. For the money one spends at Thandi I would expect better. That's very expensive rice. There are other restaurants in town that I get better value for the same kind of money.

We were in St. John's for one night (Sat). Everyone (hotel staff, person at the Visitor welcome center, etc) recommended Thandi and its famous butter chicken. Excellent ambiance, upscale vibe, great overall menu. However, traditional Indian Vegetable dishes such as Bhindi Masala (Okra), Baigan Bharta (Eggplant), etc. were absent. We ordered Butter Chicken and One Daal. We were told than all entrees come with Rice and Naan. Waiter brought warm Pita bread and some hummus. My cocktail was also good. However, the main dishes were very very ordinary and there was no fluffy Naan. Instead of Naan, this upscale restaurant serves store bought Pita bread (Same bread that was given as appetizer). Butter chicken was OK, but I have had much better butter chicken in hundreds of places prior to Thandi. No Indian Naan from Tandoor, really? We asked for dessert and there was no Indian dessert on menu either. All choices were cakes or ice creams etc. I am certain that "mix vegetable korma" (that we did not order) would have been prepared with frozen vegetables. There are plenty of other Vegeterian options, but not traditional Indian Vegetable based items. Overall, restaurant appears to have a high margin, low labor cost, high-hype type of approach to making money. Making fresh Naans, or Indian Vegetables are labor intensive, so let's serve store bought Pita bread and let's call it Naan. Overall, a very mediocre food in an upscale setting and with great serving staff.

We have several chop chop meals, and this one by far was my favourite. The naan bread and hummus was a nice treat to start off our evening. The samosa with the tamarind sauce was very good. I chose the chicken in orange sauce and my husband had the green curry. We both enjoyed our meals very much - I normally ate some home for leftovers but there was nothing left to take home from either plate. The dessert was very light tasting and delicious. Danica did a great job even though it was a very busy evening. Thank you.

We were there last night for an anniversary. My wife ordered the briyani, With shrimp, lamb and chicken. I opted for the sampler plate with dal, chicken and lamb dishes. I had doubts about the briyani that arrived. The rice was uniformly reddish, which is not typical of a briani. I know briyani from childhood and have never tasted a briyani like this one ! In hindsight, I could have advised my wife to send it back !
Briyani tastes even better the next day: not this one ! O could not taste typical briani spices in this concoction.
I would give a 3 star review based on the briyani, it dragged a 5 star meal down ! Excellent service and knowledgeable servers, but they serve, not cook !

We had a great meal at Thandi. I had their signature Butter Chicken and my wife had Chicken Saag. The Butter Chicken was marvelous. The Saag was a bit flat, but decent. Both dishes were accompanied with rice and naan, with generous portions and good value for the price. We would definitely return. The staff is courteous, prompt, and attentive. Good experience all around!

The ambiance was pleasant but the quality of the food was awful. Calamari was ok in itself but padded out with chopped cabbage not sure why; it took away crispness. The wonton soup was very odd and the shared plat was dry , charred and overcooked. Disappointed; We’ve eaten here before and it was better.

My wife and I chose this place based on the great menu and because the place we really wanted to eat was closed. I am glad we found this restaurant. I had had the Pad Thai and my wife had the vegetarian curry. Their Pad Thai is a different spin on Pad Thai but it was great. I had it with chicken and shrimp. My wife said her curry was excellent too. I would gladly return here again if I am in the area.

Thank you for your review. Correct our Pad Thai has an Indian street food spin on it and one of our most popular dishes. Hope to see you again some time

When the server delivered a light beer, it tasted very weak and flavorless. I asked for another brand, but was told I still was required to pay for the one that was declined; restaurant policy. The markup on beer is sufficiently high ($8.50 per glass) they could afford to replace an unsatisfactory product with one their clientele requests.
I return the beer after one sip, and had to pay for the whole serving.
A satisfied customer is the best advertisement. That would NOT be the case here.

The food is so good. I went with a group of friends, we all had different meals (pad Thai, butter chicken, spicy Thai and stir fry), we were all pleased. I tried a bite of everything, and their butter chicken is amazing! Besides the food being great the atmosphere is lovely.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Thani. The service was good and our meal was tasty, spiced and good value. We ordered the $89 dollar Indian meal, a choice of 3 mains, naan, rice, poppadum and pickles. There was plenty for 2. The rogan Josh was really good, Cana masal and vegetable curry delicious.
Highly recommend if you are in St John.

We stayed in St John for over 100 nights during Apr to July and this was the first restaurant we went to on our first night there. We loved it from the first moment we walked in. The food and service are just amazing.
Be careful with portions though, even the appetizers are filling and you will end up with a "Thandi baby".
Cant go wrong with this restaurant.
