Our family came here for lunch and we sat on the patio. It was nice and the tables were spaced out. They had a variety of beer available and lots of local options. We all had the fish and chips, it was a bit pricey compared to other spots nearby but the piece of fish was huge. The coleslaw was a little warm and personally I did not like it. The fries were very good with the seasoning added to them. Live music was playing on the band stand at the boardwalk.

Went for drinks and an appetizer. Enjoyed sitting on their patio listening to the live musician nearby. Brady was a great waiter. Our cider and beer selections were enjoyed thoroughly. However, the spinach & crab dip was underwhelming. And at $18 I wanted to not only taste crab, but have my socks knocked off. We didn’t detect even a hint of crab in the dip. The warm dip portion size was small compared to the amount of fried pita chips they provided. Would consider a revisit but please guys, fix the dip and set a reasonable price!

We were there on a Friday night. Service was a bit slow - server seemed young and inexperienced. Food was very good (we had chicken fingers and some kind of beef dish with mashed potatoes). Live music was good. We would return again.

Went there on a Wednesday afternoon recently, party of 3 men. Sat in pub part because the music in the restaurant portion was blaring down on the booths. The only good thing was the service, the young woman was great. Because of her we did not make a scene about the food. Appy 3 orders of bacon wrapped scallops - overcooked and came to the table cold, how can that be? French fries were really good. Main - 2 half lobster and 1 shaved prime rib. The meat in the prime rib just tasted funky, the dish was not appetizing. The lobster dishes were cold with overcooked lobster and small portions. There are so many more better restaurants uptown SJ, there is no reason to go to tourist restaurants like this and Billy's in the City Market. Jesse Vergen should be focusing what is coming out of his kitchen and not what is going on at other restaurants!

My wife and I came here for a date night. The location, normally, is great being right by the water but of course all you can see right now is construction on the new Key. Firstly, the service was not great. Our waiter was not very attentive or particularly friendly (not unfriendly) but definitely left something to be desired. We were not asked about a drink refill or how our food was until after appetizers and about 3/4 the way through our mains. The food, which is why we go anywhere, left a lot to be desired. Firstly, our drinks off the cocktail menu were seriously lacking care and detail. There was no lime in the Moscow mule (at least that could be tasted), and my coconut rum cocktail was very bland for something with so many ingredients. Our food— the croquettes lacked much flavour, really just tasted of cream and lacked seasoning but they were crunchy which was nice. The lobster carbonara is a hard pass for me for the over $30 cost a flavour other than excessive salt would have been great. I was particularly turned off my the chunkiness of the sauce which meant the eggs I the carbonara were not cooked properly and therefore scrambled. My wife had the crab and spinach dip which may not have been great but was probably the highlight of the meal

We were there for Chop Chop but their regular menu was available too. I had the 3 course special which was interesting. The whole deep fried fish was a bit challenging to navigate. I had kind of expected the waiter to debone it but that didn’t happen. Taste was good though. Chop Chop is an event where the restaurants do some more experimental items. The soup and dessert were very good.

Hubby had a hankering for the bacon wrapped scallops, so we ordered that and the spinach and crab dip while sitting on the patio. Area is under construction but looks like they are doing their best for the interim. Was a little disappointed in the crab dip as didn't taste any crab, mostly spinach and found it on the salty side. In the past we've always been impressed by the Ale House but found it just okay this time.

This is a nice pub in all the ways that count. They were able to accommodate our very large group (~20), food arrived promptly and hot and delicious and pretty much everything arrived at the same time. A bit pricy by home standards, but portions were extremely generous. Staff seemed very nice. Atmosphere is nice - no specific theme I would say, lots of aged-looking wood. Place seemed very clean.

When I was here around 6 pm on a Fiday, the public market had closed and there were only a few restaurants/bars open. I had read good reviews of this place so I stopped in. I had the Millions of Peaches sour, which I liked. I enjoyed the ambiance, service, and streamed music and thought they had a very good selection of drafts.

Not sure if this place has changed owners or recipes!? Some of the worst food I’ve ever had in a restaurant :( a few years ago, my husband and I had eaten here and the scallop risotto was to die for. Tonight we were back and I was so looking forward to this dish, well it was absolutely disgusting !!! All I could taste was nutmeg? The worst food I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant! We also ordered the crab and spinach dip 🤮 ummmmmmm, I didn’t see or taste anything like crab or even spinach for that matter! It tasted like soupy lime and overly salted deep fried pita chips. Yuck!!!! So disappointed, especially considering the price we paid :/ we will not be back!! McDonald’s drive through would have been better! Don’t waist your money!

As our vacation wa tos coming to an end and our departure still hours away we wanted one last meal, and the Saint John Ale House did not disappoint. The place was alive with live music on the ground floor, we settled upstairs in the dining area. Our cocktail of choice were delicious, so good I forget lol. Our meals were the Burger of the Day, kinda made me think of Bobs Burger's, The Blue Belle and a GF Chicken BLT that was to die for. Finally the dessert was Rhubarb and chocolate cheesecake with candied rhubarb rd. Great food and service. Oh and it you like beer they have ALOT lol! Located in Market Square and right by the waters edge. Great shots of the Passage outside.

Extensive selection of New Brunswick beers on tap. I counted 25 on the list. We had the Some Friggin Good DIPA and Charlie Horse Kölsch. Bacon wrapped scallops came in a small iron skillet and we wished we ordered more. Very flavorful. Mains were the shaved prime rib with mashed potatoes and the rainbow trout. This was hands-down the best trout I've had in a long time. So moist and flavorful. Ok, not for everyone since the head and tail are still on the fish as it is presented on the plate, but oh very tasty! Cheesecake for dessert hit the spot as we were full from dinner.

Had lunch with my husband on Friday and the service was slow and my meal disappointing. I tried the appetizer special of Blueberry habanero scallops and they were slightly overcooked with no hint of spice at all. My chowder had a very thin sauce and lots of potato but little seafood. Our server only said she was sorry about that. The bill was over $60. Doubtful we will be back.

We stopped in for dinner at the Saint John Ale House while vacationing expecting just typical pub food but we were happily surprised to find the food quality and overall atmosphere wasn't just typical pub. The food was delicious, and our server was helpful as well as friendly. Definitely a nice place to go. The outdoor terrace is fine in spite of the construction (we went inside).

I love SJAH. The atmosphere is lovely, the staff is great and welcoming, food and drink are truly excellent. I went for the Chop Chop dinner, though I rarely do restaurant week anywhere. I sat at the bar, has a delicious Old Fashioned, and chatted with the bartender who was friendly and knowledgeable. Dinner was delicious - shrimp cocktail, prime rib with Yorkshire pudding and steakhouse sides, yummy trifle for dessert all at a very reasonable price. I also got an unnamed but tasty nonalcoholic cocktail. I always appreciate when they’re available. A great restaurant. I always look forward to returning.
