Lovely small café. A tea and a slice of banana bread will cost you under $10. After walking Signal Hill or Battery Road it’s a cute spot to drop for a while. It’s quite busy and the staff are very courteous.

I have been to many cafes across Canada. The Battery Cafe easily is the best. High quality coffee and superb service. Two patio's with unique views, doggy friendly at the walk up window, they even give canine treats! Theres live music usually once a week, and the staff are top of the line. Courteous, friendly and extremely professional. I actually have become a coffee snob because of the consistency of coffee and the positive vibes that always are present therein. Once you enjoy one of their Americanos, you too will feel spoiled. Don’t get me started on the food. From the Kicker Breakfast Wrap - my favourite- to the gluten free brownies, I keep eating there, gleefully enjoying every sweet and succulent mouthful.

We stopped here a couple times while out visiting the sites of the city. It is a cute little cafe but a little crowded. It offers all kinds of sandwiches, soups, pastries, coffee, tea, juice and hot chocolate. The first time, it was for an afternoon snack and the second time was for lunch. I had a ham and swiss sandwich of gluten free bread and my husband had the leek soup. Then we had the oakcake cookies and hot chocolate. Everything was very good except they could have skipped the onion and shredded carrot in the ham sandwich. (who puts onions and shredded carrots in ham sandwiches?)

I had a cappuccino which was excellent, however I also ordered a salmon bagel with capers, pickled onions, etc. I was disappointed by how small the bagel was. It was literally the smallest bagel I’ve ever seen, with proportionately small portions of salmon on it. It cost $12 (before tax + tip) and I left feeling hungry and taken advantage of.

Hi Geocore, I am sorry that you had a negative experience. The bagels come from a local bakery called Georgetown. They are slightly smaller than normal however locally made. I hope you decide to come back and a free coffee on us. Best, Mary Beth

So we got this recommendation from Lonely Planet (with a blue star) and what a disappointment. The food is unimaginative, the staff are unsmiling, unfriendly and/or surly, CHARGE a tip even though having to go to the counter yourself to order, and when they deliver it’s again unsmiling and appears to a chore; and they won’t clear tables. The bright & cosy place is dull and lifeless, uninviting, uncomfortable, noisy (Canadians do love to yell), and the surrounds lack character. So what’s wrong with Canadian cafes; unimaginative food, food lacks flavour, relies on condiments and sugar, bad prices, they lack character, art is really quite bad. While the staff here are not very good, in Canada, and Newfoundland generally, they are excellent and make the places. Chatty, smile, show genuine interest, and appear to like their job. Do you know how much this grilled cheese sándwich cost? $11. Tip was included but I was not asked and only when I checked my change was I told.

Hey Dave, thanks for your Feedback. Not sure what was happening in the cafe on that day as normally we get high marks for our Customer Service. Our Menu is small but we work hard to ensure that the quality is good. And as I'm sure you are aware tipping is standard in North American restaurants but it's always optional. I hope you'll have better experiences if you return and in your journey across the country.

This was one of the first places we visited when we arrived in St Johns. Busy but service was good. Lovely baked goods and the coffee was good too It’s right on a corner a short walk from the main shops in St Johns. They have a takeaway hatch on the side to order a takeaway as well as indoor and outdoor seating. Good choice for a snack and coffee

This place just didn't quite click for us. There is a limited choice breakfast menu; lessened by "we don't have a few things because we had a busy weekend." We were there on a Tuesday. We did try the breakfast sandwich, which was okay, but nothing special. At $9.80, the offering at Tim Hortons might be better. The yogurt and granola cup, which was sparse on the granola (included blueberries, may be as a substitution? We had drip coffee, which had some grit floating in it. We came here because of the good reviews, but sadly, we didn't have the same experience. Hopefully, it's just an off day.

It was definitely an off day after a busy weekend, but that's no excuse for poor quality coffee and to be short on food. It's always a challenge as we transition into our busy summer season, and rest assured things will improve. Thanks for your feedback, it's appreciated and helps make us better.

We went for breakfast and had wonderful blueberry-white chocolate scones. The coffee is very good as well. The second day we had an apple-lemon-cream cheese scone, and it wasn’t as good. They don’t have a large selection of baked goods, but they do offer a few other breakfast items. We went back on a Saturday night for a live concert and Karla and Jackie were wonderful. If you are in town on a Saturday evening, check out the live concerts.

We had read about this place before we got there and had breakfast there one of the mornings we were in town. We each got the breakfast sandwich and they were really tasty, although the bagels were a little harder than I am used to. The coffee was delicious. The service was great. We sat on the little patio outside and overlooked the water which was a great view to have with breakfast!

THanks, glad you enjoyed it, and sorry for the hard bagel. They are Montreal style, baked locally, smaller then some but usually delicious. .

Cutest cafe, they have 2 patios and indoor seating. A variety of local books chocolate and other goods. Coffee supplies like Chemex and pour overs. Very well priced. George Town bagels, YUM! A large drink menu and they serve alcohol if you are so inclined. They had a sign indicated live music! A nice stop after hiking the North Head Trail on SH!

This is based on our review as we were two who felt the same way. There is a nice atmosphere and it was quite busy but our breakfast was not very satisfactory especially for the price . Note that if you want a breakfast bagel , it will be small. I did see reviews after about the same thing and understood why it was so small but it was quite disappointing The hot chocolate and coffee were good .

I come here frequently and I've never been disappointed. Recently I've been hooked on the Gluten Free Walnut Brownie. It is honestly life changing!! Such a treat. It's super cozy inside, or you can stay outside and use their walk up window. I highly recommend checking it out!

What a hidden gem in St. John’s. Located at the edge of Battery Park in St. John’s you drive right by it on your way to signal hill. The quaint interior is so relaxing . Decorated with local art and information about the local art scene. Get your coffee or latte here. They also have small breakfast items and lunch. We had the Swiss cheers and ham bun. Fresh ham and plenty of it. They also have a patio.

This is a pleasant local cafe at the Battery. They have a small patio outdoors plus seating inside too. The coffee is great, and there is a nice selection of decadent treats. Stock up on your calories before making the trek up to Signal Hill! Note: It is on a pretty busy intersection, with only a bit of street parking.

Lovely cafe, with great coffee, cakes and choice of sandwiches. The only shame on our two visits were people taking advantage of the cafe. Sitting there taking up tables for far too long, tapping away on their laptops and using the cafe electricity. One lady sat there for 40 minutes whilst we had lunch and did not touch the biscuit she brought. Another gentleman packed up all his stuff walked off leaving his cap on the bar stool only to come back 3 minutes later and unpack again, he just went to the toilet. Shame as it just changes the atmosphere. Would suggest the owner removes the free WiFi and customers using their electricity. Or stops people using laptops or adds a time limit for known offenders. Lovely cafe otherwise. This is a business, not a student library, common room or crèche.
