I've been a regular visitor to Newfoundland and St. Johns for years. Auntie Crae's bakery that resided at this same location was a favorite of mine and I bemoaned the day when they closed. The Rocket has picked up the baton and is doing as well or better in providing great baked goods, special sandwiches and other gourmet quality items as well as a homespun environment to sit and enjoy. Keep it up. Looks like a lot of college-aged patrons are collecting there too. Great place in downtown historic St. Johns.

Went to Sidmouth to Golk Week. Food to buy on Vie far too expensive. Went back to town to look for food. Found a lovely bakery and take away. The Upper Crust. Wonderful food. Sandwich 🥪 sooo big filled to the brim with various fillings. Then a cake mine Choux filled with apple, the size of a dinner plate + a coffee filter or tea. Wait for it !!!! All for £4.99. Its so good and won't break the bank. Lovely friendly women too😁😁😁👍👍.

I had read somewhere in my research of things to do in St. John's that there is live trad music at Rocket Bakery on Tuesday afternoons, so my husband and I headed down to Water St. around noon and popped in for a bite. We both had chicken sandwiches, which were delicious, and I had a nice iced coffee as well. Service was friendly and efficient. We weren't disappointed in the experience. Sure enough a group of musicians seated at a table in front took out their instruments and treated everyone to a wonderful set of tunes. We really liked that it felt low-key, authentic and local, not a tourist attraction. There are a lot of things to like about Newfoundland and Rocket counts as one of them.

This was a well occupied location on a main drag, so we weren't able to go in the first few times we passed by. Because of this, I expected great service and food. We were pleased to see few people for breakfast and went in to order. I asked for 2 specific things: gluten free bread and eggs well cooked. They did not offer a gluten free option, and eggs arrived runny. I took them back and asked them to just take the eggs and pop them in the pan upside-down to cook the yolk, so it would not take long. 7 minutes later, when my friend was finishing her breakfast, my second attempt arrived. New eggs, gawd love 'em they were well cooked, and the same toast reheated ... I couldn't cut it with a knife and fork with any ease and had to pick it up for a serious chew. I can say the avocado spread, although thin, was flavourful. I was not given water, and my napkin blew away when the server moved my friend's coffee cup that was holding it down, and didn't replace it. My friend enjoyed her meal, thus the second star. I'm hopeful this was an "off day", but you know ... they expected the tip when we payed the bill when ordering ... I expected service and product delivery AND RECEIVED NEITHER. My only disappointment in St. John's.

I like The Rocket Bakery and have been a loyal patron for years. I don’t mind paying a premium dollar for a coffee break to support local, etc. I am less prepared to give up the time it takes to get served here these days. There got to be a better way to stream line the ordering process and get something as simple as a coffee and snack to the customer quicker and easier. This is not Rocket Science☺️

Rocket refused to give our wedding deposit back even though it would have been impossible for them to provide the services agreed upon at the time of booking. When we were forced to rebook our wedding plans at the Rocket Room due to Covid in 2020, we were initially told that our deposit would be held in trust until such time as the event could be rescheduled. When venues were again allowed to operate some months later, we were still unable to return to Canada from Australia due to travel restrictions in both countries. Then, near the end of 2020 we were informed by the Rocket ownership that they were moving from their old Water Street location and would, as a result, be losing the function room, and therefore unable to hold weddings in 2021. We were then told, after several emails back and forth with proprietor Dave Hopley, that we would receive no compensation of any kind from Rocket, despite the fact that the facilities we had paid for no longer existed. We got nothing at all for our money because of the supposed financial hardships that Covid had foisted upon Rocket Bakery; a company which, 18 months later, is now operating 3 locations. Covid has been devastating for many and outside anyone's control but I am absolutely shocked that they can get away with keeping our money, when they are still operating a successful business. It is truly shameful behaviour from a company that has the gall to associate itself with the traditional Newfoundland values of kindness and community. What is worse, I strongly suspect that we are not alone in our experience.

Unfortunately Rocket has taken a nosedive in terms of service. Their food and coffee is good, if you can get it. However, it takes AGES. Many people run in to get a coffee and end up waiting 20+ minutes. I was just there and ordered a latte which took almost 20 mins, and the couple who had ordered before me ended up asking for a refund and leaving because they couldn't wait any longer. 30+ minutes for to go food and coffee isn't going to cut it for most people. If you have time to go in, order, sit and wait then it's lovely. But if you expect any kind of expedience on to go orders, you will be sorely disappointed. The staff is also apparently overwhelmed. They cannot keep up with orders. As a result, they are snappy and rude, which I understand, but something needs to be done about it. MANAGEMENT - where are you?

Hi STJCC - Thanks for your review. You caught us on one of the busiest days of the year and we serve folks on a first come first serve basis. It sounds as though there were quite a few people ahead of you. We’re sorry you were disappointed and we hope you’ll try us on another day. Kelly

The food and drinks were good, however the service was indifferent at best. The store wasn’t busy. Ordered a cappuccino, two lattes, a brewed coffee, two breakfast sandwiches and an oat square. The drinks and square showed up about 30 minutes after the sandwiches. When the server was asked if the remainder of the order had been forgotten, she was indignant at being asked.

So my fiancé and I are fully willing to give this place another try when we return to St. John’s, as we see a ton of positive reviews, and the pastries and food genuinely looked good. However, our first experience here wasn’t great. I ordered a sesame seed bagel toasted with cream cheese (which was fine), but my vegetarian fiancé ordered the breakfast without bacon. They added bacon and put the cheese on top, she would’ve just removed the bacon but she was disappointed that all the cheese had melted onto the bacon. I went to the front to ask for a slice of cheese and they insisted on making a new one even though I had mentioned we were already in a rush and the slice of cheese would be fine. We waited too long and had to leave to catch our boat, so she had a few bites without the bacon and cheese and said it was ok but felt the egg was overcooked. This was just our first and only experience, but not the last. Again, we totally plan on revisiting. Mistakes happen, we just wish it was handled a bit better but I’m sure the next visit will be an improvement and we can give it the high rating I’m sure it deserves. We would like to try the famous Fish Cakes!

Had a breakfast sandwich on a croissant. It was really good. My wife enjoyed it as well. I had the mint tea and my wife had the St John's Fog tea. She said it was as good if not better than a London Fog. Service was fairly quick but we arrived just before a rush came in. Seems to be moving well though. A little pricey. Over $30. You can get a full sit down breakfast with bottomless coffee just down the street.

Whenever my mom comes to visit, the only thing she wants to do is come to Rocket Bakery for the fish cakes & a coffee. She likes them so much that last time she actually brought some back to Nova Scotia!! I can’t order anything other than the Cinnamon bun, it’s just too good. They sell other local products and treats. The staff is extremely friendly and always there to greet you with a smile.

Right on lunch time, so it was a bit busy, but they processed our counter order and brought it out to our table. I had a sausage roll ($6) and sis had a fish cake ($7) for a little snack, while we sat outdoors and listened to a street musician. Very tasty, just the right amount, and friendly fast service.

Stopped in for a cold brew coffee and a ‘crookie.’ Coffee was bold, cold and fresh. Crookie was sweet and fresh. Atmosphere inside is quirky and inviting. Young lady behind the counter who took our order wasn’t particularly friendly and seemed as if taking our order was some kind of imposition. Other than that, we enjoyed our snack and coffee.

Visiting the area and stopped here for a later breakfast. I had the well known Friday feature- the Flakie. I can not confirm weather the flakie was cranberry, raspberry or lingonberry, but whatever it was it was very yummy. Not sweet at all, and lots and lots of cool whipped cream inside the flakie. We also had breakfast croissants and coffees. Very yummy food, quick service and a great location!

Saw this lil gem & figured a bakery was a safe bet. It sure was! We both had the oven roasted chicken sandwich with cheese, spinach, rocket sauce, tomato & mayo. We were delightfully pleased. The bread was sooo good & everything was fresh! Delish!
