I have been dining at The Gypsy for years, (usually 1-4 times per year) and have never had a bad meal or service, but some of my guests have not been so lucky. I noticed a couple comments in previous reviews concerning face masks. When I visited a couple weeks ago (Sept 2), you had to sport a face mask while in the building unless you were seated at your table. As for the servers, they are rocking out awesome face shields (the best ones I’ve noticed at any restaurant to date). I strongly recommend making reservations and ordering the salmon! 👌🏻 Enjoy and cheers 🥂

Thank you for taking the time to share your review! I appreciate your repeat patronage and recommendations. The Blackened Salmon is hands down one of the most popular classics we offer. It is certainly enjoyed by many over the years. We are taking all safety recommendations seriously with regards to COVID-19 and rocking masks and shield guards are at the top of that list. Thank you for noticing all our hard work as we navigate through these trying times.

While the prices are not inexpensive, the meal I had (blackened salmon) was exceptionally good and well worth the price. Two different servers waited on my table and both were warm, welcoming, and helpful. I would definitely go back. If price is a problem for you, go before 4 pm and order from the extensive lunch menu.

Just a note to say that I may have judged too harshly. Based on the professional manner that the manager has interacted with me and on all the reviews that I have read since my last visit it is possible that I need to give this restaurant another chance! There are such events as the "Perfect Storm" where many things can go wrong at once and the food industry is certainly a place where these storms can hit more than once. Maybe it happened when I was there because it seems that many visitors have had an excellent experience at the restaurant. For that reason alone it deserves another chance.

Very disappointed in the service and the food last evening, July 18. To begin we had made a reservation for 6 people for the restaurant, not the upstairs pub, that we confirmed twice before arriving, We came at 6:55 for a 7 pm reservation as per advise and waited for our table. The waitress was perplexed as to where to seat us, and showed us to a small table in the pub area with 4 chairs. She said they had nothing. We said that there were 6 of us as per the reservation and I pointed to another table nearby with 6 chairs that appeared to to be ready. She said “no you cannot have this one, it is reserved”. I advised her again that we were a party of 6 with a reservation, but she “not you guys”. I’m feeling a little out put off and stated that our reservation is an important as the next and that we are the ones here on time. After much ado with the other servers she reluctantly seated us. We order our drinks and shortly after order our entree. During this time 3 parties were led downstairs with groups of 6 and had a table reserved for them. 1 hour and 40 minutes later the food arrived after I prompted the waiter several times that we were getting very hungry. His excuse was that the order of nacho that a member of our party ordered as an appetizer delayed the service. The nacho arrived 10 minutes before the entree. Now to the food. The fries were so salty no one could eat them. My $42 Steak was flat, thin and tasteless. Very disappointed with the food but insulted by the service.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review! It is unfortunate to hear you and your guests had such an underwhelming experience with us. Though I do not intend to use this as an excuse, we have very recently introduced a new reservation system to help coordinate our floor plan with customer requests. Undoubtedly, the hiring and training of new hostesses and servers has sometimes created some chaos while seating our patrons. I can ensure your reservation is just as important as the next and it is with deep regret that you were left to feel less important then my other patrons. I have brought attention to my head chef with regards to your disappointments in the food quality with emphasizes on timing and consistency. Likewise, my bar manager and service supervisors are working with my service staff to ensure proper communication techniques when dealing with wait times on food. I truly hope this finds you well and if given the chance, I hope my team and I have the opportunity to showcase you with an elevated experience which truly represents us!

We have been to the Gypsy Tea Room a number of times and I have recommended them to friends. Our last visit was disappointing. My husband had blackened salmon, his favourite dish. He was disappointed in the portion size of the salmon, for the price we paid. My daughter had fish and chips and the cod was yellow and slightly over cooked. I ordered pan fried cod. The vegetables (asparagus, tomato, carrot and potato mash) on my plate were delish, unfortunately the fish was also yellow and dry. It was edible, but in Newfoundland in a $50 a plate restaurant (including a beverage), quality is expected, especially in a town where fresh cod is readily available. Staff said the fish was fresh frozen...it was definitely frozen... fresh - no. It was our first restaurant meal downtown since March. The staff there choose not to wear masks inside. We left disappointed, for the price we paid.

Thank you for sharing your review! I appreciate your repeat patronage and recommending us to your friends. It's unfortunate to hear your last experience was subpar from what you typically experience with us. We pride ourselves on elevated food and excellent service in a elegantly relaxing atmosphere. I'm sure you were excited to finally dine out since the pandemic and I apologize we did not deliver to our full potential. We have been following recommendations when dealing with social distancing, capacities and proper hand washing techniques. Staff are trained to ask their guests if they prefer them masked or unmasked during their dining experience. I wonder if this option was given upon being greeted. I greatly appreciate the feedback and I hope you will join us again.

It sucks to have to write this, given the many great experiences I have had with bar munchies & drinks at this restaurant, but I can’t not. From the moment we walked in and were led to a table by an unenthusiastic waiter who neglected to tell us where to find the drink menu (online) things weren’t looking great. He didn’t mention any of the specials until we prompted him at ordering time, provided no cutlery and didn’t check up on us until well after we’d finished our appetizer and received our main courses. The baked Brie for our appetizer was fairly decent, albeit they didn’t provide enough tortilla to scoop it all up! My partner ordered lamb curry, it didn’t look much different than something I’d make in my kitchen but he felt it was well seasoned and “almost” worth the cost. I had the risotto - bland rice with two mushrooms and a piece of asparagus throughout that I couldn’t enjoy. For the first time (ever) I sent my plate back and advised I couldn’t finish. The boxed risotto I get from dominion on occasion has 10x the flavour. Having barely ate anything I did venture across the road and find some great nachos at OReilleys patio!

Thank you for taking the time to share your review! It is pleasing to know you have had many enjoyable experiences with us despite your last. It seems we missed the mark with both food and service. I appreciate the comments as I use them to help teach and train my front of house staff and kitchen team. I have had several complaints with the Risotto and my head chef has already adjusted that menu item. All other feedback has been noted by my chef as well. I hope your last experience was a one off and that your next will be much more enjoyable as you have experienced in the past. Thank you.

Unfortunately, this restaurant has really declined in the past few years. The back ‘dining’ area is rundown, the quality of the food is quite poor for the cost. We were a party of five dining on a Sunday with only two other tables in the restaurant. The service was inattentive, the food was very slow. We had to flag our server to order, refill drinks, etc. There are no linens on the table and the condensation from the glasses left puddles everywhere, since the server didn’t collect the laminated menus they stuck onto everything. For the cost of the food the tables shouldn’t be wet. It made the experience uncomfortable from the start and doubly frustrating since the server was hanging out at the bar with another employee. One appetizer was sent back twice, two entrees were inedible, and and hour after we ordered we were told one entree wasn’t available. Other entrees can’t be modified because they are pre-made. We did not finish our meals. To the restaurant’s credit, our bill was fully comped, but even still we will not return.

As everyone knows in my hometown I absolutely love to eat. It’s probably my favorite thing to do. Lol. I searched on google maps nearby restaurants and I came across this gem. We were out for a walk and decided to get something before we went back to our hotel. We started with the baked Brie and the gypsy salad followed by the Cajun chicken fettuccine and it was delicious but the star of the show was the blacken salmon it was absolutely fantastic. The food was delicious and Gavin our server was very attentive and made our dining experience even better. We will definitely be back.

Great food but service was definitely lacking We started our meal with the Greek Salad and the Baked Brie. Both were delicious! As a main meals, we ordered the Duck and the NL Cod. We definitely recommend both of these meals as they were amazing! In terms of the service, it was very slow. Our waitress was nice but didn’t really interact with us that much. I didn’t know I had to look up the drink menu online but remembered seeing a comment made on Trip Advisor about it. My husband ordered a drink before our supper came and finished it - he wanted to order another one but our waitress never made an attempt to come see us to check in until our food arrived (by another waitress). We also saw a party of four come into the restaurant, sit down for 15 minutes and never once had anyone come speak with them. They left with their menus on the table - I don’t even think any of the waiters/waitresses or bartenders even noticed. Rating for overall experience is Average because of the lack of service. The food was absolutely delicious and would rate it as Excellent.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review! I'm happy to hear the kitchen team provided you with delicious meals despite the lack of service. I appreciate you informing me on what you noticed happening around you with regards to another table leaving without any service. I would like to gather a little more information so I can pin point when you visited. With new hires for the the busy summer, some of the service team may need more training. If you would kindly email me at doug@gypsytearoom.ca it would be greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you in advance!

We were married in The Gypsy Tea Room last weekend and we couldn't be more pleased! Our ceremony was in their wine cellar room, followed by dinner in the adjacent dining room located downstairs and reception in both. The venue is gorgeous and the food was amazing. Food options from our wedding menu included red pepper soup, Gypsy salad, seafood chowder, Casear salad, followed by a choice of mushroom risotto, rib-eye steak, blackened salmon or short-rib pasta and the desserts (carrot cake or cheesecake) were delicious as well. They were also able to accommodate a nut and seafood allergy. We've had nothing but positive feedback about the food, service and atmosphere. The Gypsy Tea Room has a huge asset in Doug, who was essential in providing recommendations and coordination for our entire wedding. Thank you again Doug! Also thank you to the bartender, Joe, who was very attentive especially to the mother of the bride who felt special because of it and was very appreciative! All of our guests had a wonderful time and were so impressed with absolutely everything. Thank you to team at the Gypsy Tea Room!

Last Night my husband and our two close friends made our way to the Gypsy Tea Room and after a raining afternoon we risked the chances and sat outside on the patio. We ordered the Lamb Shank and COD Feature which we’re both recommended by our server. Not only was he spot on with the recommendation, but I’ve never laughed so hard throughout a dining experience in my life. Patrick or as we like to call him, St. Patrick, was incredible. He provided us with excellent wine pairing recommendations and he was so entertaining and charming. The entire table may have a crush on him. Aside from the heat lamps not having propane we had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend the Gypsy Tea Room to everyone.

We booked our wedding here after cancelling our originally planned large wedding. We cut our guest list to 25 people and had the most perfect wedding at The Gypsy Tea Room. We had both our ceremony and reception at the venue and every single aspect of our day was more amazing than we ever could have dreamed. The ceremony was beautiful and Doug made sure it went off without a hitch. We had a custom menu for our supper and had a fantastic 3 course meal with multiple options for everyone including vegan and gluten free options. When we walked into our reception, Doug greeted myself and my husband with a glass of champagne to celebrate our marriage. Doug honestly went above and beyond making sure our day was perfect- from helping time the bridesmaids walking down the aisle to checking on us to make sure the meals were great. I honestly can't say enough great things about our experience and would definitely recommend them as a wedding venue option!

A large group of friends booked a reservation to dine at the Gypsy Tea Room. We do this on a regular basis at another restaurant and have never had trouble with meals or service in the other restaurant. A few of our ladies ordered appetizers that took an hour to come to the table after they were ordered. One of my friends ordered a salad as her main and the bread and butter special as an appetizer. The salad was brought out as her appetizer and the bread and butter as her main. I did not order an appetizer but ordered the Gypsy salad with grilled chicken. All the mains for my friends were brought out and the server told me mine was coming "shortly". I waited and when most of my table companions were almost finished their meals the server told me my meal would be out soon. At that point I told them it was no need to bring as my dining companions would be finished by the time it arrived. The server offered me my meal to take home in a bag. Not the same. When I was leaving the server apologized again and told me there was a mishap in the kitchen with my chicken and they had to start it again. I should have been told that initially and asked if I wanted something else or just the salad without the chicken. I should not have been told it was coming out shortly or it was on it's way. To compensate for this mishap and sitting for 2 and 1/2 hours without my meal the restaurant did not charge me for my $11 glass of house wine. I will not be back to that restaurant and none of my dining partners will be either.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review! We appreciate you and your friends choosing The Gypsy Tea Room for your night out. It is unfortunate to hear you had such an underwhelming experience with us. After 20 years of business we continue to strive every day to provide excellent cuisine and service. It is with deep regret that we failed to provide you with this on your last visit. After speaking with our service team who looked after you as well as our chef, we admit that lack of communication on our part was the cause of the mix up with a few of the dishes served. We greatly apologize for this and will use this opportunity for continual training for present and future employees. I believe your last experience is not a true representation of The Gypsy Tea Room brand. I would very much like to speak with you in person and invite you back for a memorable experience that showcases what it is we proudly provide. If you would be so kind to email manager@gypsytearoom.com or call (709)739-1414 I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you again for sharing your review!

Dined here for a large family gathering.. Easy to book and great location. Great menu with enough to cater for every palate. Unfortunately coffees were brought out with milk that had soured, starters were erratic in delivery so some had finished before others were served, plates were unceremoniously landed on the table somewhere near your setting and the steak was somewhat underwhelming. This restaurant needs to up its game to charge the high end prices it does. Disappointing in many respects.

We had our wedding ceremony and reception on December 20th and it was absolutely perfect. The venue is naturally beautiful with the brick and beams in the cellar room making it perfect for an intimate event. The food was delicious, a wonderful selection and they were able to accommodate multiple allergies. The service was five star, A huge shout out to Doug and Sheri who essentially coordinated everything and made the day worry free. They went above and beyond to allow this day to be so special and enjoyable for us and our family. Would recommend this location to anyone.
