Myself and my wife went there for Valentines / Birthday dinner. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed and friendly. The wait staff is very efficient and professional. The service was more in line with what you would expect from a premium fine dining experience. The food is amazing. We had scallops as an appetizer, Newfoundland Lamb Curry and Salami and Mussels... went for a christmas treat and was blown away by the sheer quality of the food, the beef tartar was shockingly good, and the moose pasta a perfect winter dish. If I were rich I would eat here weekly.

Stopped here before for coffee and dessert and knew we wanted to come back to dine. Very vibrant atmosphere in the old Scotia bank building. We did the chef's tasting menu and wine pairing and were not disappointed. The whole meal was a surprise from start to finish so if you are a little bit daring when it comes to... More

The Merchant quickly became our regular go-to place, after our first visit. The food is excellent, and fairly priced. Best place to take friends in all of St. John's. Drinks are fairly priced. Beer selection is good and cheaper than Bier Markt. Great relaxed atmosphere. Not as noisy as many other restaurants downtown. Many servers, all very friendly and helpful.... More

Business lunch, seated promptly, friendly service. But then, our orders took way too long, and when my lamb pasta dish finally arrived it was an appetizer sized main priced at $20 that showed up warm, not hot. Sandwich combo's seem to be good value but the pasta mains are undersized for the price. Another person at out table had pasta... More

Great restaurant, wish there was one like it in my city. Waiter was very charming and explained all the dishes in great detail so there could be no misunderstanding. Of course, when in St.John's eat cod! It was probably the best ever. Yummy. The water glasses were filled often which is always nice in a restaurant when you don't have... More

One of the nicer places to have a drink in St. John's. I always expect the food to be better than it is, but it's worth going for the atmosphere and drinks. I recently had a HUGE creme brulee which was a winner.

We were not impressed with our dinner at The Merchant last night to celebrate my birthday. We had heard great things, and I did love the open concept of the room, but the food did not live up to the hype. We found our beef tartare tasty, but our chicken pasta dish was far too busy and not at all... More

Recently got to try the Merchant Tavern for lunch, and was pretty impressed, very nice atmosphere inside and great service. The menu was a little small, but everyone in my group found something they liked and everyone enjoyed there meal, would definitely go back.

The atmosphere is upbeat and busy, great decor and layout. Service was impeccable. The value for the food was average at best, I found a lot of menu items to be overpriced. I had a prime rib dinner that I could've easily gotten from a local diner at a better price point. Had the tuna poke as well and it... More
