Less Than a God, But More Than a Restaurant

When wandering the mean and faceless streets of Burlington, there is only one safe-harbour where one can feel truly embraced by both the food and the staff. That place: the Charcoal Pit. My husband and I split a regular sized poutine, and when presented with our order, found the portion so gargantuan that no matter our effort, we could not finish it in one sitting and had to walk away with some still left over. Delicious as it was, it was just too much food for average mortals. We overheard one employee ask another how the gravy was doing. His response? “Still brown.” What more can you ask for?

Classic burger joint with made to order hot food. Home cut fries, large burgers on fresh buns and delicious Greek souvlaki / gyros. For people tired of factory burger sites. My kids loved it.

Best burger in town and REAL French fries!!

I’ve been coming to this place for 45 years now and it still makes my mouth water every time I think about it. It’s nothing special to look at, no great atmosphere, just good affordable fast food. You can’t get a better hamburger deal anywhere. Hamburgers still requires two hands to eat them standard toppings but the have the stewed/fried/sautéed onions (call them whatever you like) that you can’t get at any chain burger joints. Real potato French fries and great onion rings. And not just burgers they have hot dogs, steaks, chicken giro, Greek salads and more. Service is fast and flavours are the best. The last of a dying breed of independent burger places, I’m never disappointed!!

New owners do not provide the same quality of food as the original owners. It’s a shame as the restaurant use to be a great place. If you are not familiar with the menu and know what each dish is to be served with you will not receive it. Will not be coming back after being a customer for over 25 years.

Disappointing

I ordered a chicken souvlaki plate and a pork souvlaki salad for takeout. The souvlaki itself was good. The salad was marginal - limp and tasteless vegetables. The fries were soggy, and the rice overcooked. If I ever order from them again, I will get a wrap. Their meat was fine, and it's hard to screw up pita.

This place was awesome for years the best burgers around and nice and clean , new owners changed the burgers and we all looked at each other and were disappointed 😔 they are horrible rather go to Burger King .

Burger Patties were Replaced last summer

Unfortunately have to agree with some of the burger assessments and hadn’t had a chance to review as yet. I had a burger in Hamilton today and won’t give a plug but miles better. I have been going to the Charcoal Pit for about 35 years and it was always a consistent and awesome experience. When original owner sold the next owner did a wonderful job keeping on tradition. I was astounded to find out the newest owners changed the burger Patties. A 40-50 yr old formula and you change the main staple ?.we got our normal takeout and went by the lake and I even called in to the restaurant and staff was nice enough to fess up. Not even close to the old quality. My seven year old thought I had ordered him a veggie burger and that’s how we discovered before we had bitten in. That’s how obvious it was. For those are new to the restaurant as in the past six months or so, you don’t know what you don’t know or what you have been missing - the burgers were much better and had lots of taste and texture like old times. I write this review not to slag on ownership but for them to realize quality means something. Up the price if you need too but don’t mess with a good thing. I guarantee one thing- Ryan Gosling will notice as will any regular that has been a loyal patron over the years. Needless to say we have not been back since. Just not a good experience. I strongly recommend you bring back the old burger patties or equivalent. To end on a positive note - staff was very pleasant and fries and buns were like ol times. Don’t skimp- quality is king. Would love to know if you return the old burgers and we will be back.

Everyone knows the Charcoal Pit! It's been there forever and I had driven by for years! Now that I work nearby I have had the pleasure of indulging in their delicious burgers, amazing fries and the best Greek Salad with grilled chicken you can find in town. Quick, simple, delicious...it's been here forever for a reason!

Overlooked

I have passed by this restaurant hundred of times but never tried it until now. Ahh just another hamburger joint I thought. Wow, was I wrong. Due to circumstances In the matter of 3 days I have visited twice and plan to again. The cheese burgers are awesome. The fries are scrumptious. The pork souvlaki on a pita was great and was able to substitute a Greek salad instead of fries at no extra cost. The gyro on a pita was as good as I've ever had with plenty of meat and very tasty. Can't believe I waited so long before trying this Burlington fixture, but think about it, that's why it is a Burlington fixture. It is darn good.

Favorite greasy spoon spot

We love this place. It is a small greasy spoon type place. ( you know the kind of place You would love after a night out back in university) now we got for the delish Gyros and burgers. It is a staple downtown and I hope it stays around forever!! So friendly and fun a Greek restaurant and burger place. But they also serve the best Greek salads ! If you haven’t been I highly recommend it.

Quick tasty food

Love this place, especially for late night grub. Local eatery on Lakeshore, easily accessible to most local bars. Also offered on Skip the Dishes, give it a try!

An unreal veggie burger - huge portions and very affordable. Quick and friendly service I had the combo with fries a pop and a burger. I loaded on the veggies. I'll eat here again

The place has been in the same spot serving burgers for over 40 years. Best choice in town for a good quality product of this type. Other choices on the menu but I go for the burgers
