A great romantic spot in Cambridge. We decided to visit for their New Years special and it was very good. We had the yummy dual soup and crab cakes as the appetizer both very tasty and not huge portions. Dinner included beef tenderloin and mushroom...truffle rigatoni. Very rich in flavour. Dessert was a dark chocolate raspberry tart. Overall the quality of the food was worth the price. An excellent recommendation for a special night out.More

Imagine trying to create a memorable birthday dinner date with your girls at a restaurant over 120kms away from home just to receive a distasteful welcome. We were all dressed to the nines, therefore it wasn't our dress code. Things got really awkward and uncomfortable...as the evening progressed. We walked in to find out our friend who had arrived on time for our reservation had already been warned there were reservations. So right from get go we got the memo that our reservation wasn't valuable, the message was eat and get out. To kickstart the evening our waiter was switched before we even ordered a drink. So were assigned a waiter's whose demeanour was standoffish, arrogant and unconcerned. While l understand the emotional labour that waiters have to endure in the service industry, since it was my birthday a little effort to smile or wish me well would of been an acceptable kind gesture, but he made sure not to acknowledge it despite my friends efforts to alert him that it was special my day. Instead my birthday was treated with coldness, while we simultaneously were observing tables besides us effortlessly offered warmth and pleasant gestures. While my friends wanted to keep our spirits up, honestly the service was such a damper, we even had to humiliate ourselves by asking for bread and butter. By the time the food came the experience had killed our mojo, the only good thing is we came with an appetite so we stayed in to eat. The fact the l don't remember how the food was is very telling, the only thing l remember is the unpleasantness. When the dessert came l actually smiled, the waiter said curtesy of our chef and presented a desert with treats and the edges of the plate were beautifully written in chocolate "happy birthday." For a moment l thought what a nice way to make up for such a disastrous evening, only to be surprised to see the desert on my bill. l thought it was a mistake, so l asked the waiter. However, his response was a slap on the face. It was a simple "the only birthday curtsey from the chef is the chocolate writing on the plate." Our bill for three of us was over $300, my only regret is l wish l didn't leave a tip.More

Ended up at The Blackshop when we found our restaurant of choice closed. There were many good things to praise - the restaurant is lovely, the service was great, there’s lots of free parking. They were busy with reservations but found seating for these walkins...in the bar area. The small booths were quite cosy and comfortable! BUT at their price point, I become more critical. Our bill for 2 was $125 + gratuity and I expected excellence. The “ crispy” calamari app was NOT crispy because it had little breading and was slightly undercooked. It wasn’t even attractive. I’ve had much better for less money. The entree of Blackshop Schnitzel was nicely done and topped with Black Forest ham under melted Provolone cheese. BUT, the lobster pasta @ $35 was a big disappointment. The pasta itself and the panko crust were fine but the lobster was definitely hiding. This is a lot to pay for a bowl of pasta that retails for $1/lb.!! My favourite offering of the evening was the mini vanilla bean creme brulee @ only $5- it was well presented with a profiterole, whipped cream and large blackberry. It was delicious and a great end to a so so dinner!More

Have been there many times in the past, food usually very good to excellent. This time is was very disappointing. I had the special sandwich of the day..a chicken wrap…lots of chicken but if there was any sauce I could not taste or see it....Very bland. The “lobster “ bisque soups was tepid and tasteless. Maybe a few tiny bits of lobster. Waitress was great. Will go somewhere else with my group next time.More

The lobster pasta was recommended by a friend. It was $35.00. Very disappointing!…no taste, there was maybe a cup of pasta, very little lobster if any…no Parmesan cheese I could taste!….

We decided to take advantage of a gift certificate we received following a disappointing brunch at their sister restaurant Sole in Waterloo, to celebrate our anniversary. We opted for patio dining as we were more comfortable with that. The reservation was made on Open Table,...which provides a dining profile. Sadly, no one seemed to be paying attention to that, as no one acknowledged our anniversary or the dietary restrictions noted on the reservation. Our server Max did not seem confident about altering the menu to accommodate a gluten free diet, brought regular bread to the table, and cited off all of the dessert options which contained wheat before we reminded him they were off limits. The lobster bisque ordered as an appetizer came out to the table lukewarm and was sent back. The floor manager apologized and replaced them, commenting that they must have gotten misplaced. Aside from the temperature, it was rather tasteless, with none of the pepper salsa visible or tasted. The replacement bowl sent out tasted burnt and very peppery. I opted to change to the feature soup of the day which was very hot and tasty. The artic char was the feature fish of the day, which was a perfectly cooked, hot piece of fish served on a bed of cold orzo. A very unappetizing suprise and something that did just not seem go together. Was it another mistake? Is the chef not tasting things? When we questioned it, we were told it was supposed to be like that, like a cold pasta salad. We did not understand the combination, and needless to say the pasta remained on the plate. The wild boar pork belly and scallops were very nicely presented and delicious. It all added up to inconsistencies that were disappointing, and not something we have experienced in our previous dining experiences at the Blackshop. Covid protocols were in place but not always followed. While we stood in the vestibule to fill out the questionnaire, it was impossible to properly distance from another party doing the same thing. Another couple came in, walked right through all of us, and were immediately seated indoors. We weren't sure if they had filled the form out before hand. Guests were allowed to walk through the restaurant without properly wearing their masks. In the end, the restaurant comped the soup, and with our gift certificate it turned out to be a very reasonably priced dinner out, but definitely not one worthy of a celebration.More

Very good in all aspects. Great staff and dog-friendly patio. Delicious food, Took my wife and friend Mike Bullard with a special guest. As good as any top-end restaurant should be. Great chef and menu considering Covid. The fantastic waitress actually thought Mike might have...a chance as a comedian, but they caught him trying to steal a cactus plant..LOL Money well spent just for that. Good night everybody. 5 starMore

We have been regulars of the Blackshop for many years as we are residents of Cambridge. We went with friends recently but the service, food and ambiance have gone way, way down in our opinion. We understand that COVID has restricted menu selections but the...food we got was overcooked, service was inattentive and slow and the food was poorly presented. Not up to former standards. Very expensive and most certainly not worth the cost. We will not go back. Sad to say.More

We had a fantastic Valentine's Day experience over the lockdown. The ordering and pick-up logistics were perfect and our food was delicious and fresh and at a good temperature when we got home. I actually used a gift card that I had received from Blackshop...from our visit there for our anniversary. On our anniversary the meal was delicious but my serving was pretty small. I let them know that and they apologized and gave us a gift card for our next visit. We appreciated their professionalism and follow-up service.More
