I've enjoyed meals at the Black Forest Inn for 50 years. I have yet to be anything but delighted. I'd offer to do dishes If they'd teach me how to make the goulash soup.

My usual entree choice used to be the excellent Hunters Schnitzel which was smothered with mushrooms and gravy but this time I decided to try something different. I went for the Holstein Schnitzel which absolutely blew me away. I loved the combination of breaded Schnitzel...with a piece of sunny side egg with each bite. The vegetables (zucchini, carrot, etc.) were fresh, hot and cooked to perfection. The Bavarian dumplings (side order) with gravy were just as good as my mom used to make (they brought nostalgic tears to my eyes). The only minutia I want to mention is that this Schnitzel is advertised to come with smoked salmon and caviar. While technically this is true these two items are quite small. This didn't bother me at all and I had a small chuckle to myself as a result. The overall outstanding taste, the exceptional price and friendly service were the dominant impressions. A word about wheelchair accessibility. The staff provide wide ramps to get into the restaurant and down to the main dining area. It worked great for my large power wheelchair. Danke schön Schwarzwald Haus.More

The Black Forest Inn is a 50 plus year landmark in downtown Hamilton. It has real German and Austian food and beer and is a must visit.

I loved the Black Forest Inn in the 70, 80 and 90’s. You could not get a better Vienna Schnitzel in Ontario. There never was parking as it on a Main Street in downtown Hamilton. There are parking lots east of the restaurant on King...Street and down Ferguson, where the Black Forest sits on the corner. The decor has never changed and that is fine. You must go early as it fills up fast with the theatre nearby. Prices are excellent. We were there for a birthday celebration. Almost instantly I realized the place had changed. The waitresses were not as friendly and the place was not gleaming clean as it use to be. Please be assured i am Not saying it was dirty...perhaps it is just older now. We were seated right away and ordered our Vienna schnitzels. We had caesars and it was nice that they let us add our own quantity of Worcester sauce and Tabasco. My friend with the soup of the day and me with a salad. The salad was not crisp and cold like the olden days and seemed to have pickled carrots on it. The Black Forest always had the freshest salads in Hamilton. The bowl was way to small to comfortably eat out of it. When you put your fork in, salad got pushed out. I had the house dressing which was good. My friend enjoyed her beef and noodle soup. Our schnitzels arrive with the fried potatoes we selected. My potato’s just tasted weird...like they were fried in the same pan as the schnitzel. My friend thought they sat is oil to long..not sure but something could have been done better. My schnitzel was not as juicy as I remember. Perhaps they were prepared in advance to get ahead of the rush. Trust me the place filled in minutes around 6 PM. My dinning parter loved hers. The portion of schnitzel is very generous. It would have made the plate seem less monotonous if they had colourful vegetables with it. Overall it was ok and the location is good for theatre goers. Our waitress was run off her feet and we had to go the front desk to pay our own bill so we wouldn’t be late for the play. I would go back again...perhaps not on a Weekend night to see if the results were better. I remember in the 80’s my German Uncle came to visit and we took him to the Black Forest. He wanted to eat there every single night of his vacation. Whatever that was...that won his gastronomic heart...the charm, magic and authenticity of food and the people is lacking now.More

They’re is a small step on both entrance and exit but I would consider this easily managed. The washroom is accessible but I can’t say for sure about the toilet with bar. Absolutely call them, they’re very accommodating.

We went with a large group-most had a meat based order but some did have non meat dish. The salads were great and very well portioned. Everyone did rave about the schnitzel and spetzel.
