We went for a family dinner, 5 of us. Service was fantastic. Appetizers were very good. The mains were kind of disappointing. Three of the dishes had calimari which was so tough you couldn't chew it. Mussels were also over cooked. Pasta was over cooked....The few pieces of scallops in the bottom were the gems of the seafood pasta dish. Again service was 10 of out 10, food was maybe a 4 or 5.More

We used to love dining at this restaurant pre-Covid, and it was the first time we visited it in three years. The restaurant must have changed the management and the chef - or, to put it mildly, chef was not involved in cooking the meal...we received. We had a calamari appetizer, which was rubbery and tasteless, The fried chicken dish was prepared a long time before our arrival and it was reheated - it was dry and not tasty at all. French fries were reheated as well, were limp and terrible. The other entree had the same terrible fries. We were really disappointed that the restaurant we loved to go to became just another eatery with bad food.More

We booked here based on the reviews online but were very disappointed. The server was helpful describing the menu but then disappeared for 15 minutes before we got our order in. The sausage baked in bread was delicious, the sardines were just ok and the...fried calamari was chewy and wet. For some reason our entrees arrived before we had finished the appetizers, the lamb was over cooked and a bit chewy, the steak was just ok and the sea bass was tasty but full of bones. We were offered coffee but no dessert. Probably wouldn’t have bothered anyway. The fact there were only 3 tables in on a Saturday evening when places nearby were packed speaks volumes.More

Lively atmosphere, very accommodating staff. Loved the calamari, the beef a casa, and of course the custard tarts to finish! A great place for a group dinner.

Another excellent visit at Wild Orchid - our staples include the grilled sardines, rabbit and piri piri chicken (which comes with authentic fries!). We also like that you can purchase Portugese wine at a very reasonable price for a full litre, in the same way...offered in Europe. Since getting to Europe is too difficult now, this little slice of Portugal is welcomed! Their refurnished patio is wonderful in summer too.More

The food here is portuguese and is excellent. You will need a reservation during this lockdown and parking can be a problem here. Our server was very nice but a bit overwhelmed as she seemed to be the only staff on hand. All in all it was a...pleasant experience and I would recommend this restaurant.More

Two of us ordered takeout dinners on Friday evening. I really enjoyed my full grilled seabass, served with veggies and small roasted potatoes. Large chunks of lemon and a small container of sauce were also included. The fish was perfectly cooked, no small feat, considering...it could have easily been overcooked with a takeout format. My partner also really liked his Carne Alentejana, a stewy mixture of pork/clams/potatoes/veg. Very tasty. We ordered a Portuguese salad which was fresh and plentiful. Buns also included in the order. We've been going to Wild Orchid for years and always enjoy our choices of meals. Looking forward to the patio opening again. Please continue to support our local, independent restaurants. WE NEED THEM. I do agree with a few other reviews that the closing times seem very early and that the patio area could use some updated furniture; however, the food is always fantastic!More

We had booked a table for our 22nd wedding anniversary. We were only allowed to book a table for the inside but would have to wear a face mask while waiting for our food. Understandable considering it was the day that Hamilton received the ok...from Ford govt to allow for indoor seating in restaurants. Fortunately when we got there, there were a couple of patio tables that were free, so we could sit outside without face masks. The glass tables that we had sat at were smudged/dirty, and the comfy chairs were also untidy (had seen better days), and the area smelt unclean. There was a guy who was cleaning the inside windows of the restaurant, right where we were sitting outside. It was a Friday evening at 7pm, why would you have someone cleaning windows right in the middle of a busy Friday evening, your first day of re-opening?????? We had been waiting to try out their seafood paella for the longest time. We had originally tried to order take-out back in October 2019 for my birthday but were told over the phone call that they were slammed and could not take our order. Never had a restaurant say that they couldn’t take our take out order before. Should have listened to the warning bells back then. We ordered the seafood paella for two, with the grilled sardines as an appetizer. The sardines were nicely grilled. Although we were battling to eat them before the black flies would land on them. They should have fly zappers or something for those pesky bugs. Our paella looked great in the iron pot that it came in, but we discovered that the lobster tail was mostly shell as well as for the crab. The food wasn’t seasoned well enough. It just tasted like tomato rice with seafood bits in it with an after-taste of the metal pot!! Yuk! We were given little side plates to individually eat from with very limited napkins (the server said that they had little stock in since they had just opened, so no extra napkins except for the one cloth napkin that we given for our app and a few thin cheap takeout napkins), nothing to wipe our messy hands with; no wet wipes either. It’s really difficult to keep your fingers clean while eating paella. I did get an extra cloth napkin when I asked but still would have appreciated wet wipes or a hand bowl to clean up our sticky hands. My husband did mention to our server whether the shell fish should have had more meat in it rather than just decorative shells, she said that she would let the owner know, but nothing came of it. Needless to say, we were not happy with our most anticipated visit, the food was medicore and the restaurant needs more attention to detail if they want repeat customers.More

The front section of the restaurant was empty when my friend and I arrived for a pre-Christmas dinner. The server didn’t even offer a friendly welcome before telling us where we couldn’t sit. We thought maybe it was a reserved table but there was no...sign on it and nobody appeared. We arrived around 7 pm. Another couple sat in our section halfway through our meal. The server was very hasty and quite rude. We felt like an inconvenience to her. I no longer live in Hamilton and had enjoyed many meals there previously. I was looking forward to a reunion of sorts. We were nearly finished our delicious food when a music video began to play at the bar at a ridiculous volume. My friend and I could barely hear one another. The couple in our section looked at us a few times and clearly felt the same frustration. There were all men in front of the bar and clearly had Ben there all night (well lubricated!) I complained to the server and she replied that the restaurant closed at 8. It was now 8:10. However, the bar was open until 9. I think this was an unacceptable response as we were not told this piece when seated and I think she should have said we will turn the volume down. Sorry! We were very disappointed!More

We have visited the Wild Orchid twice in the last few months [a small problem with double-billing on my credit card was solved efficiently and effectively ... electronic error] and have enjoyed our meals both times. If you are a fan of Portuguese food, this...is the place to be in Hamilton. Anyone has read my other review will realize that we spend quite a bit of time in southern Portugal, so, I think a good review has credibility in this case. The paella (I know, it is Spanish), was one of the best I have had...and the rabbit was excellent as well. The seafood appetizer listed on the “blackboard” was, unfortunately, not available.More

We visited the Wild Orchid for the first time and found the staff to be very friendly. We DID send an email 24 hours in advance asking for a reservation, but there was no response. Food was quite good, and they have a nice variety...of wines from many countries (Portugal, of course). The rabbit was excellent and the sea bass (imported from Portugal) was nicely presented. Service was excellent...but it was a bit quick. The server DID say not to worry about leaving quickly, but 1 hour and 15 minutes for dinner was a bit quick for us. Could have been a tad slower. However, it was good food and the atmosphere and service were very nice. We shall return.More
