About
We did not invent the Chimney Cake; its origins go back over 300 years in Hungary. What we did do though is take it to another level of deliciousness! We are a family-owned, boutique bakery that makes Chimney Cakes from scratch each & every day! Every single chimney cake is prepared, hand rolled, & baked from scratch each day & throughout the day. When you enter Niagara on the Lake & turn down Queen Street, just follow the smell of freshly baked goodness & you’ll find us! When you walk in to our bakeshop you get to see firsthand the entire process right before your eyes — the mixing, the rolling, the rising, the baking, the toppings & fillings! We do variety of Sweet Chimneys like our Cinnamon Sugar or Walnut or take it up another level with a spread inside like our popular Nutella & Walnut Chimney! Our Savory Chimneys are unlike anything you have ever had! Try our any of our freshly made Signature Sandwiches! It’s time you tasted our cakes that aren’t really cakes at all!

Stopped here for a quick bite for breakfast at the recommendation of the shuttle driver for our hotel. We had lunch reservations in a couple of hours, so only wanted something very small to hold us over until then. We ordered and shared the “everything” seasoning chimney cake, filled with cream cheese and tomato. It was delicious!! I’d never heard of a chimney cake before this trip. Would definitely stop back there next time we are in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and try a different kind of chimney cake, perhaps one of the sweet options for dessert.

Our go-to lunch spot on our annual stay at Rangers Retreat. Service was slower than usual since they are apparently training new staff. You’d think that is something that should have been done BEFORE their busiest season. That being said, since the sandwiches were freshly made, not pre-made from the cooler, they were the BEST sandwiches ever. At $12.99 each I think they are good value. Highly recommend.

What can I say other than AMAZING! I have had take out from there on 4 occasions and each time it was exceptional. Their sandwiches are fresh and the bread is light and flavorful. No need to ask for anything other than the type of meat you would like as they pair the perfect fresh ingredients to make this probably one of the BEST sandwiches I've ever had. Highly recommend. I know I can't wait to go back.

Chimney Cakes are tasty, and are great for a quick snack! Chimney Sausage rolls have a delicious soft dough with a crispy exterior, which is delicious. The pricing is reasonable for the quality and fresh ingredients, but this isn’t that suitable if you’re going for a lower budget for lunch. Quick note: there is no seating in the building nor a patio. You have to find seats outside, or somewhere else. Overall, I highly recommend Budapest Bakery!

Great place in the old town to stop for lunch. The chimney cakes and sandwiches are all freshly made daily, and you can see them making the chimney cakes through the glass. Lots of flavours to choose from and all are very tasty!

We came here last year and my husband got a terrible stomach ache for 3 days. The staff had assured us before he ate it that there were no nuts in the cinnamon sugar stacks. We didn’t think it could have been connected. This year we went back again, and we were so excited. I loved my cinnamon sugar stack the last time and I was very enthusiastic. We had planned our entire morning around getting there for exactly 9:30 when they opened, and the stuff were very unfriendly and we weren’t happy with the experience at all. At least the stacks are delicious though right? Wrong! Mine was crunchy and over cooked, and my husbands was better. But immediately, despite asking again about nuts (we always do), he felt a swelling in his mouth and had a stomach ache for 3 hours (he had only had a small amount this time). We called the bakery and asked again “if you have a nut allergy, can you still eat these?” And she said “oh, well you can’t have the sweet chimney stacks. We use the same dowels for all the sweet ones. We make the hazelnut ones and then immediately put the cinnamon sugar ones on The same Dowels.” And the nuts are on the INSIDE of the treats so they make direct contact with the same dowels. This is ridiculous that we had to ask 3 times before someone told us this. We could have avoided two allergic reactions that affected our entire trip. This wasn’t a situation of “we can’t guarantee nut contamination”, because we understand that here’s a risk wherever we go. They CAN guarantee nut contamination! They literally do it on purpose. They should have just said that from the start. It’s a good thing that my husband only had a small Amount this time, as he was suspicious because of our previous experience. We will likely never be able to go here again, and it’s very sad.

Here, delicious so-called Hungarian chimney cakes are baked in the shop itself: wrap a long string of dough around a rod and rotate it over a grill. Traditionally it is rolled in just sugar, but we used sugar and cinnamon. Various other variants were also available. They were delicious fresh cookies, which we ate for lunch.

Amazing funnel sandwiches - highly recommend this place! The staff are friendly engaged and make the freshest sandwiches ever eaten. Fun atmosphere while you wait and the staff are polite informative and happy to offer advice and suggestions- I go regularly and can recommend the traditional sugar and cinnamon roll as well as the veggie sandwich and the cheddar jalapeño funnel… amazing! Please consider dropping something in the tip jar - they work hard and always maintain a smile and a pleasant manner no matter how many times they answer the same questions…

There was a line right out the door on Sunday at noon but the food was worth the wait. Not inexpensive ($38.70); for a Black Forest ham & cheese, a Hungarian Salami and a Nutella & walnut chimney but they were all fresh and delicious so worth the money. We will definitely return.

I ordered the Nutella and walnut chimney at $8.50 and my husband ordered the debrecyna sausage chimney. for $10 The Nutella and walnut was delicious, the pastry was fresh, crisp on the outside while soft on the inside. My husband's sausage chimney was disappointing. The sausage was good, but the pastry was disappointing. It was not nearly as good as the Nutella chimney. It was if it was undercooked, the mouthfeel was somewhat pasty. The cheese that was baked on the outside of this chimney could not salvage the pastry or the overall unsensational experience of this $10 chimney. If it were baked to perfection and filled with something like a bacon & caramelized onion jam or something else in addition to just the sausage, then it would be a winner. At $10 it really felt like an unfair price for what we got.

Oh man absolutely delicious chimney cakes and sandwiches. We had an everything bagel cake and a Turkey and pesto sandwich on a baked cheddar cake. They were so good we went back the next day and got the same thing. I would go out of my way for this place. The Oreo cheesecake was also fantastic. The service was great and the prices not bad for a tourist town.

We visited Budapest Bakery at their new location on the main street for the first time and REALLY enjoyed our lunch. Not normally a fan of “premade” sandwiches, the ham and Swiss and Hungarian salami on aged cheddar and herb chimneys were fresh and delicious. We shared a warm cinnamon sugar chimney for dessert. Not inexpensive, $30.70, but we felt the quality ingredients were worth the cost. There are a few patio tables available outside but, since it was raining, we drove along River Road to a parking area and ate in the car.

Excellent, the chimney bread is so delicious. I would return here every day if it was local to me (so maybe a good thing it isn’t!). My veggie chimney sandwich was delicious and my husband’s sausage version was eaten so quickly I didn’t get a picture!

I can’t say enough about how delicious these chimney cakes are. The staff are also tremendously friendly and helpful. I spent the last week in NOTL and visited this bake shop a couple of times. My friends and I enjoyed the turkey sandwiches for dinner one night, it was just what we needed after spending a day visiting wineries. The sandwiches were very fresh, loaded with turkey, tomatoes, etc. We also shared a sweet chimney (white chocolate and strawberry - I think). It was absolutely delicious and decadent! I was very disappointed that they were closed on Tuesday morning, I had planned to pick up a few extra goodies to take back to Ottawa with me, but surprisingly, they were closed :(
