We were excited to try this restaurant with friends. But in the end, the experience had us confused about the hype around this restaurant. We were seated in the cramped front section of the restaurant, which was rundown and in desperate need of a refresh....When we sat down, my wife’s chair immediately gave out from underneath her. We thought that perhaps a chair leg broke. Turned out that her chair leg had fallen into a broken floor vent that was directly under our table. We brought up the issue to our server and asked if anything could be done. She replied (without sarcasm) “I guess the plastic wrap we put down isn’t doing the job.” So that explained the plastic wrap all over the place. She came back and said she raised the issue with her manager who would look into it. We never saw the manager and the issue was never brought up again. No apology at all. It was pretty obvious this vent was in this condition for some time. It wouldn’t take much to run to a hardware store and get something to actually fix it. They just don’t want to. Our table had a direct view of the bar area (if you can call it that), which was incredibly chaotic. I get that things get busy, but if your bar is essentially a built in cupboard in a hallway in the middle of a restaurant that half of the tables have a direct view of, maybe try to keep it a little tidy. Our cocktails, once we finally got them, were not very good. And old fashioned served in a water glass. A French 75 that was t mixed and tasted like straight gin and the bottom. (We joked that we could have better drinks around the corner at the Royal Oak…and, sadly, after dinner we did.) The washroom when we were there were appalling. It was beyond filthy. There was blood all over the washroom. One of our friends returned from the washroom speechless from the state of it. There is no justification for that. As for the food, it was okay. But it wasn’t good enough to make up for the downfalls of this place. For starters, the chef could learn how to season things properly. Everything was very bland. The zucchini cakes were oddly wet. Maybe we came on an off night. But the experience did not justify the massive prices this place charges (they don’t tell you that the prices advertised will double if you’re a table of 4). This place has plenty of great reviews, but our subpar experience left us with the impression that this restaurant has lost all of its care and passion.More
