I was looking for an early evening snack before attending an Ottawa Chamberfest concert at Dominion Chalmers Church. Al’s looked like one of the liveliest joints in Elgin Street’s lively dining scene, I suspect because of the 4-6pm Happy Hour which offered reductions on appetisers,...deserts and some beverages. Ushered to a table inside by a tanned leggy young lady in a short black outfit I was given a sort of truncated menu with appetisers and a lunch menu from which I chose a steak tartare supplemented by a bowl of frites. A grapefruit based mocktail in a pewter bowl was a refreshing accompaniment. But only when I ordered a sorbet for a desert was I given the actual Happy Hour menu which was an even more truncated version of the one I had started with. Meanwhile a trio of city gents opposite had given up on Happy Hour altogether ordering a bottle of wine and larger carnivorous mains whether from a full a la carte or their imagination I know not. I was irritated here as in other venues to be given a card machine suggesting tipping starting at an extortionate 18%. To a Brit used to tipping no more than 10% this seems like a North American con.More

-Arrived for a couple of drinks then dinner (anniversary). They advertised a happy hour. BUT found out the happy hour didn't apply on the Patio by the Park. No one mentioned this before seating. So much for drinks. -Ordered a bottle of wine and calamari....Calamari came quickly but looked and tasted like it had missed cooking time: Not crispy, and too chewy. -Caesar salad - my wife's comment: Yours is way better. A thin, not a creamy garlicky, dressing served with rusty romaine. (Yes, supply issues - brussel sprouts, the side - could swear they had been reheated. I cooked some the next day with bacon & garlic... much better. - Wagyu (Australian loin) - waiter told us the chefs suggested cooking it medium rare to allow the fat to melt. The centre was delightful, the ends not so much. - We did not stay for dessert & coffee. - I did not complain or comment (remember anniversary - I had to be on good behaviour). -server was pleasant, patio nice, it could have been wonderful. It used to be, we have had steak dinners before the pandemic, this does not compare.More

I was not pleased with my meal. The salad was OK; the baked potato was lukewarm (obviously reheated); the rib steak was thin - cooked as requested but the meal was overpriced for the quality. The one saving grace was the nicely flowered patio.

Started with unique and delicious cocktails. Food was excellent. A minor glitch with the steak which was immediately dealt with. Owner came to the table without being asked. Family of 9 and everyone enjoyed their meal. Catherine was our waitress and did a superb job...of looking after us. She recommended the carrot cake which did not disappoint. Would go there again.More

Anniversary dinner was wonderful! While it was a bit noisy, the food was incredible — especially the Australian A9 Wagyu steaks! Will return when back in Ottawa!

Went for a Birthday dinner last night, The place is very noisy, The waitress was new and excellent. The shrimp appetizer was bland tasting and firm. The garden salad was mostly crispy white lettuce with a slither or 2 of red cabbage and a piece...of tomato. Ordered a med-well done filet Mignon for medical reasons and received a med- rare grilled tasting. The cognac sauce had no taste of cognac . My wife's french fries were semi soggy with grease. My mashed potatoes were standard The side dish of spinach was very good and the chocolate mousse for dessert. 2 drinks 4 glasses of 6 oz wine and 2 port - $350 -Our ears wears still ringing after we left from the noise. this is not fine dining but more Bar Lounge, Disappointed.More

We went to Al's after a 30 year absence ( due to a not good experience) for our 49th anniversary for lunch , as I had a desire for a filet mignon and wanted to give the reputable restaurant another chance. Our server Brooke was...very attentive and sweet. My husband enjoyed his haddock burger. The buns were delicious and freshly baked. My salad was very tasty, as Al's garlic dressing is legendary. Sadly my filet was stingy and had veiny and had fatty bits ( the problem 30 years ago). Brooke asked about my lunch so once I told her and showed her the steak, she agreed and brought a new one. It was fine. Once the meal was over, we were kindly offered dessert and coffee or tea. I chose the creme brûlée. Sadly it lacked what my favourite dessert boasts- a hard crackling top and a creamy custard. The top was soft and the the pudding was curdly and lumpy, not smooth and creamy. I didn't have the heart to point that out, as we were there to celebrate .and the main course had disappointed already. Sadly we won' return to this iconic Ottawa restaurant. The service was good , ambience very nice, and the kitchen offered us another steak and dessert, but bottom line, the food itself does not merit another visit. There are so many restaurants in Ottawa to choose from. Should have gone to the Keg.More

We usually share a steak. Many steakhouses frown on sharing. Al’s has a modest sharing charge that gives each diner a separate plate, salad and side. The steak comes already separated. The steak came as ordered, the sides were excellent. We had two excellent deserts....All well served. So 5 stars.More

Kitchen will be open until 10-10:30pm depending on how busy it is. We can take a 10pm reservation, that would be the latest! :)
