***NASTIEST WAITRESS EVER*** My wife and I visited this "place" one time only in what must have been February 2014 for winterlicious (fixed price menu). At the time my wife and I weren't married yet. We were boyfriend and girlfriend and we were living together...nearby in Etobicoke. Prepare yourself for this fiasco....like truly terrible and all around disturbing experience. We came in for winterlicious dinner at a local French restaurant, because, hey they're offering this special and the food is supposed to be good, let's do this! We were seated near the back of the restaurant. At the time we sat down, the table to our right was empty, and the table to our left had an nice older couple. It wasn't tight at the time, it was comfortable. Plus my wife and I aren't big people, so yes, we were OK in that regard. The waitress comes by, an older lady, but in good shape. Slender and quick on her feet. We told her at the beginning that we are interested in the winterlicious menu. She provided us the price fixed menu and offered us wine to start. We declined. My wife and I (remember we weren't married yet at the time) were quietly talking with each other, hardly calling over anyone to see about us, just taking our time. The waitress was at first polite enough, but something about her rubbed me the wrong way. There was this....steel in her eyes and mannerisms that left me feeling a little bit cold. Throughout the time we spent, she was pushing wine options on us. While she may have been "knowledgeable about wines" she was aloof to our preferences - no wine please. She did not seem pleased that we didn't want to pair wine with the food we had chosen to eat that evening. Both my wife and I noticed this, not just myself, but we left it at that, and kept on enjoying each other's company. Again however, there was something about this waitress that I could not shake.... in the back of my mind she seemed....off, if you will. It not so much that she didn't smile or make us feel welcome (even though that didn't help at all), but underneath her skin and behind her eyes she felt to me like we were hardly worth her time. This is where is starts to get interesting At the end of the dinner, the waitress brought the check, and considering that we were on a limited budget (hence winterlicious and declining wine during dinner), I paid what was owed and did not leave a tip. This is common in the industry. Sometimes as a server you get tipped, and sometimes you do not. It comes with the occupation. If maybe I hadn't gotten a gut feeling that she wasn't a terrible person, I MIGHT have tipped. Alas, I am EXTREMELY grateful that I did not tip to this person. Get this: she came up to the table we were seated at while there were some other people now sitting beside us, and she said very clearly "Was there something wrong with the service because I noticed that you didn't leave a tip". - She actually said this out loud and yes, just about everyone within earshot heard. I just replied "No" meekly as of course I was embarrassed at the time, and so was my girlfriend/wife. We got up shortly afterwards, and my girlfriend/wife had to use the washroom. I stood up, and waited in the hall that leads to the doorway. Said waitress was walking around and obnoxiously said loudly, "Bye! Have a good night!" (what the hell?) I pretty much was fuming at this point with the audacity of this....person. As it turns out, I found out recently that the waitress said to my girlfriend "he's not a good guy, and you shouldn't stay with him".....believe it or not, this actually happened. This waitress attempted to *sabotage my relationship with my girlfriend!* My girlfriend and I ended up staying together, getting engaged, got married and have a wonderful life together. I had a gut feeling about this waitress, and I was absolutely right!! Sooooo glad I did not tip her. What a cold-hearted, vindictive, self-entitled bully. Like I wrote NASTIEST WAITRESS EVER.More

My husband and I live in the Kingsway area and always like to try the local restaurants in the area so last night we tried Merlot. We were hoping to enjoy a quality, tasty French meal and were so disappointed. We started off with duck...foie gras that tasted like cheap pâté and wasn’t creamy or fresh at all. Quality duck foie gras is supposed to melt in your mouth and didn’t, instead it was gritty. With our mains, our steak was supposed to be rare and was overcooked and not a quality steak at all as it had no marbling and no flavour. And our salmon pasta in rose sauce was a salty disgusting disaster soaked in tons of oil not rose sauce. We opted out from even attempting dessert. My advice is give this place a skip and walk across the street to Vibo for an actually good, quality meal that you can eat and enjoy!More

This was our first time there and we were lucky to get a table on their outdoor, rooftop patio. The service was very friendly, the menu diverse and the quality very good. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal, which ranged from pasta dishes, to...seafood, to sausages. Don't forget to leave room for dessert.More

I have frequented this restaurant for the past ten years. I have each time come back with new family and friends, and all are impressed. I was daring, and tried the pate appetiser and liver...yes, liver. I highly recommend this dish, as it is topped...with onions and tenderised to the point of melt-in-your-mouth. My wife is a fan of the lemon pie, with the right balance of sweet and tart. My friends ordered the grilled (not deep-fried) calamari and the chopped steak; essentially every dish was a winner. Service, as usual, was impeccable. The roof top patio is elegant and I look forward to the next time!More

The service was great , absolutely fantastic! Food wise : The gaspacho was not one , the grilled calamari cold and the frites not home made .. Very disappointing.

My husband and I had excellent meals. He enjoyed the escargot and I, a very tasty salad. We both liked the tender and flavourful beef bourguignon. Desserts if crème brûlée and a special chocolate creation topped it off. All the staff we interacted with were...helpful and courteous.More

Excellent French cuisine. Staff were great as was the food. Went for lunch and will definitely go back for dinner. A bit small, and a bit noisy, but not enough to ruin the experience.

So my wife and I set out to have a nice quiet dinner in the hood at Merlot. I love France and more importantly french cuisine...the place was busy and we were sat at a busy table where my wife kept getting bumped by the...wait staff, this I expect in Paris not on the Kingsway in Toronto...so we changed seats, I wasn't going to be bumped at all... At the table next to us was a good friend and his wife and we had some laughs as there went the quiet dinner...BTW next time I go if we do I am requesting table 30. Ordered dinner and the food was pretty good - mussels fine - escargots good but served with a spoon, rather odd???? My main was not spectacular I had the Shrimp and like most places they use 16 - 20 size verses going with the U 15 or even better the 6 - 8 which would be really special, I can always tell a place by the shrimp they serve. We did have a nice night and the place is loaded with posters of many places I have been to in France so it was nice to talk about all of our travels...the bumping and the shrimp brought the night down.More

Went to Merlot Friday night for dinner with friends. The place was packed but the service was quick with tasty food. Food was so yummy that I forgot to take photos of dinner before diving in.

Very nice restaurant. Good wine list. They have a prix fix menu and a regular menu from which to chose your meal. We had a nice white wine, I had the sea bass my friend had Artic Char and both were delicious with rice and...grilled veggies. The creme’ brûlée was good but not as firm as I like it...delicous all the same. Good bread and the service was good...More

My dad took me here for lunch. The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly and attentive. It's not a place I would take my children, but it is a great place for a date night.

First time here. Server was very friendly & attentive. Service was good overall although I had to ask for more water. In my opinion, you should never have to flag down a waiter to ask for water. The food was beautifully plated, perfectly hot and...cooked superbly. I had the chicken breast & vegetables and loved it. There was a puréed vegetable that I didn’t recognize so I inquired and was told it was curried rutabaga- it was amazingly smooth and flavourful! I started with the escargot- too many onions floating in the garlic butter for my liking but my husband liked it. My husband and son had the mussels to start and they were tasty. My son had the seafood fettuccine and my husband had the shrimp and rice and vegetables- all good. I recommend this place & would definitely return. I usually upload picture but the lighting was too dim to accomplish that.More

Taken out by friends for a birthday celebration. Lovely... had been many years ago and still a go to restaurant in Bloor Street Village. Excellent attentive service. Great daily / evening special. I had the pickerel ... it was excellent. Best pommes frites I've had...in a long time. Sizable portions for all my dining friends. I must comment... noisy! I would go earlier 6 /630 PM if you want to chat with your table mates. Like most busy restaurants on a Saturday night... busy. However... a definite go back.More
