It's one of those places we had been meaning to try for a long time so when relatives invited us to join them, we jumped at the chance. The Monkey Bar has been in the area for more than two decades and I now understand...why. There is something for everyone, and while this could be a sign of a restaurant that hasn't made up it's mind what it is, in the case of the Monkey Bar, it's one of its most important attributes--and all dishes are excellently prepared and presented with panache. There are traditional dishes--rack of lamb, calves' liver, veal chop, steak--as well as many fresh seafood offerings, vegetarian dishes (panko crusted eggplant, braised Puy lentils). There are dishes with an Asian touch and also lovely Italian style pastas. My partner had the fresh fish of the day, very impressive, crispy skin, and I tried the veal schnitzel, with tomato onion relish and sweet potato fries, also nice and crispy and perfectly prepared; my brother-in-law, who said he had been to the Monkey numerous times, ordered the liver, with roasted onions, vegetables and garlic mashed. He thought it was very tasty but would have liked a slightly larger portion. At the same time, my schnitzel was such an ample amount, I handed out tastes to those at our table. Service is helpful as to food choices and wine (waiter's choice turned out much better than the wine bottle I had my eye on) and the warm apple strudel with vanilla ice cream brought us back to our Ashkenazi forbears, bubbes who would have turned out the same dish with pride. The Monkey Bar is family-run, from the chef to the front of the house, and it shows. There is a warm friendly feeling that oh so few restaurants can reliably demonstrate. We definitely will be back.More
