I came to Fran's on a recommendation from a friend. They had indicated that it was a Toronto Institution. I did a quick read of the website/menu before heading out and realized this place is a glorified diner. When arriving there, it is definitely a diner. And as such my expectations were set. If you are looking for gourmet, this... More

I've dined here often as my hotel is a block away. I've tried many items off the menu and each and everytime, it's great. The servers sometimes are hit and miss, from very attentive to watching tv or disappearing into the back. Frustrating when wanting to pay. But the food is great and it's consistent.

First visit. We had a little bit of everything. Veggie breakfast, beat salad, turkey hot sandwich and chicken & waffles. Everything was delicious and the prices are very reasonable. Staff was friendly and diner feel is cool. Will definitely go back.

This is a cute little place. I really love this patio, it's atmosphere, and the fact that it's in the heart of downtown (close to many hotels). It's a perfect spot for a hot day because every couple of minutes a nice light water mist sprays everywhere which is soooo refreshing considering Toronto's humidity this summer. Another thing I really... More

Restaurant was busy and it was late on a Saturday. Service was still friendly and attentive. We just ordered some appetizers and some dessert. Very nice, Apple Pie was excellent.

I’m in downtown Toronto today and we stopped in to Fran’s Restaurant for some lunch. I’m told that Fran’s has been around for quite some time and is well known for its home-style cooking and warm, welcoming atmosphere. The place was certainly busy and the menu quite extensive. The item that caught my eye was the Packed Grill Cheese, which is described... More

I came because I had heard the rice pudding was really good. This is by far the best rice pudding I have ever had. I would go back just for desert. Food was ok I had meatloaf and was a bit disappointed with the gravy. Overall a decent place

I love Fran's restaurant. I loved this place for years. It is a diner with personality. The food is great and the staff is friendly. Fran's is known for the pancakes and all day breakfast. They do serve many items on the menu. Tip: if you like bananas, the pancakes are delicious with Fran's maple syrup. Great place to bring... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
