The coffee is so delicious and the pancakes were the best! We were so happy that we came to this historic landmark in Toronto for breakfast!

It was busy downstairs so we opted to sit upstairs, which is just as cute! We were starving, so I got the Monte Cristo and we split the Crepes. The crepes were delicious! However, if I were to go again I would not get the Monte Cristo again, it was quite dry and could use some more flavor.

On a early sunday morning, I was on the lookout for a good breakfast. The place is quite popular amongst locals- especially starts getting packed early on weekends. I managed to find a comfortable bar chair and experienced a very hearty breakfast with generous pouring of freshly brewed coffee. The food is very appetizing and prepared from scratch and definitely... More

I love a good breakfast, and Senator didn't disappoint. Friends and I went on a Sunday morning. The restaurant was packed and there was about a 10 minute wait, but the hostess was attentive and kept checking in with us as we waited. The breakfast itself was top notch and fresh, and our young Scottish waiter was personable and professional.... More

I found this restaurant a couple of doors down from City TV at Dundas Square. Immediately loved it! It is Toronto's first restaurant and a patron told me he very often sees famous people sitting at the back. Ground level is classic diner (very attractive) and the upper level is bistro style. Everything looked amazingly good - egg-type choices -... More

Had breakfast here one morning on our trip to the city. We were there early so didn't have to wait for a table. Nice decor and good atmosphere. Service good and the staff were friendly. Food came to the table quick for most of us. However, food was not all served together as one of us had to wait a... More

We had passed the restaurant during the day and thought it might be a good choice for dinner. The decor is right out of the 1940s and the restaurant has been in the same family's ownership since then. The staff were pleasant and willing to engage with the customers. The chicken pot pie was excellent, full of white meat and... More

Stopped in to the Senator last night, without realizing the history and the fact that this is the oldest restaurant in Toronto. As others have said this is a 50s-style diner - it has a great ambience, and is really a cool place to eat. Staff is great and had a good time chatting with them. They recommended the burger... We went for breakfast here on the back of all the positive TA reviews! I had the ham, scrambled egg with maple beans and toast which to be honest was just OK! Nothing spectacular about it! The wife ordered the homemade pancaked with maple syrup and compote which again were just average. She certainly had better in the city! Service... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
