Bread and Butter is a favourite lunchtime spot near the southern end of Mt Pleasant Village, with a very nice patio. The food on offer is mostly inspired by cooking in the old Austria-Hungarian empire, with the emphasis on the Hungarian part. Great sandwiches and...schnitzels, and desserts to match. The prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended.More

Great Veal BUT ...All the TIME the Owners do NOT plan ahead and constantly run out of bread rolls, Veal and Chicken Schnitzel ..VERY FRUESTRATING... The Last 3 visits I left with Nothing.... Its really a BIG problem...many times I go there and they offer...me Veal on sliced whole wheat bread... ??? by 2p.m. There are NO OnIon buns left ..NO Kaisers Left...NO Cheese buns left...As I used to own a restaurant I asked them WHY they don't order a few dozen more BUT they don't seem to care... I also suggested that they keep a few dozen buns of various kinds in their freezer but they also didn't like this idea. .. My advise...CALL AHEAD IF YOU want to see if they actually have Buns, Chicken and Veal....often they run out of Everything by 2pm but they are still open to 4:30p.m.More

I've been a fan of this place for many many years. Bread and Butter has been a staple in this neighbourhood for generations. I used to visit when I was in high school. Back then we'd get a schnitzel sandwich for lunch and it would...keep us warm all day long. Now we bring our family and enjoy a lunch together with soup, sandwiches and sweets. The family behind the counter have been a part of this neighbourhood for over 30 years. Its been a joy to watch their children grow up and have children of their own. This small business epitomizes the essence of hard working immigrant families that make our neighbourhood warm, cozy and friendly. Support local, support small business and you'll see magic happen. We love Bread and Butter and will continue to support them forever.More

Having read some good reviews about this "restaurant," I thought I would try their food. Ordered two veal schnitzel take out per telephone, making sure that I specified "veal" twice....On arrival inside the restaurant. I found the counters and work spaces inside of the establishment...covered in what appeared to be loose none to clean glad -wrap, which extended up to the ceiling. There was a hole in the glad-wrap for serving and paying. Instead of using Perspex or glass, the owner obviously tried to employ COVID protocol on the cheap. Very surprised that the Health Authorities allowed this.... When I arrived at home to eat the schnitzel, it turned out to be "chicken" schnitzel and not "veal", encased in a large bread envelope with very little chicken inside; hardly any seasoning and quite tasteless. It was mostly bread.... I phoned the owner, who said it was a mistake, offering little in the way of an apology... or an offer to replace or refund... This is the first and last time I will patronize this establishment...It looked most unappealing when I entered....but having ordered the food already, I paid for and took my order home to eat, only to be disappointed...probably the worst restaurant out of the many restaurants in what is quite an upmarket area...More

We sat on the patio, the afternoon being pleasant. I had the schnitzel sandwich and a piece of Dobos Torte. Both were very good. The prices are very reasonable. Recommended.

Okay, so I have driven by for about 30 years now and have never stopped. What a mistake! I can’t wait to come back for the best looking Schnitzel ... but today we dropped in for a mid morning breakfast and wow! Simple but homely...and spot hitting! We’ve been eating all all the nearby joints for years ... who knew this cozy corner has pancakes and French toast. Great coffee! Excellent home fries. My son said “how come it’s only places like this that know how to make toast!” And he’s right. Small for seating but just enough space. We watched dozens of folks drop in for a coffee and to say hi ... make me want to be a regular. If you are in the mood for comfort then certainly drop by!More

Love going here for lunch. Their schnitzel sandwiches are gigantic and so filling! Have also gotten a few of their desserts and loved each one, especially the shortbread.

BEST schnitzel (chicken & veal) sandwiches in the City! Casual seating + outdoor patio. Hot food (Hungarian), salads, deserts. A great lunch spot!

Excellent, cozy, and delicious little joint tucked away in a corner in midtown Toronto. The staff is friendly and works hard to keep customers happy. We (two people) went for brunch on Sunday and were pleasantly surprised at how fast our food came and how...tasty it was! My boyfriend particularly enjoyed his Schnitzel. The is also baked goods and deli that you can purchase on your way out. Thanks for your business, Bread & Butter!More

This place is a great place to go for breakfast. My daughter and I had the regular breakfast. It was delicious! The coffee is good but could be a little hotter. I would agree with another reviewer the home fries are excellent but they should...put a few more on the plate. The atmosphere is very homey and broght back memories of my childhood.I would eat here again.More

Been coming here for 20++yrs with family, friends and employees. Rude rude older lady at cash this Sunday. She overcharged me for 2 schnitzels only, a schnitzel sandwich would have cost less. How can a single schnitzel without a bun be more $$$. She was...rude and caused a scene. This is NOT the first time I have seen this employee be rude to clients. To the owner: deal with this employee, you are losing clients due to her rudeness. The younger lady who served me, asked if I wanted a chicken or veal schnitzel. There is no veal, it’s pork 😂. On a positive note, there is a wonderful, tall slim lady who is fabulous! Find more employees like her.More

Very rude staff. Some confusion with the bill, charged me for the wrong dish and when I tried to clear it up the lady got extremely defensive and made a big scene in front of the entire cafe embarrassing me and making it into a...much bigger deal than necessary. Being someone who works in customer service I couldn't believe the way I was spoken to when I was polite from the start and it was not my mistake. Avoid.More

We visited Bread and Butter a couple of years ago and were not fans but we tried again today and after trying all the recommended places in this neighbourhood, can safely say that this will be our go-to place for breakfast in the future. My...wife had Eggs Benedict and was pleased. I had the regular breakfast and was very pleased. The bacon was crisp, the eggs were over-easy and just right, the home fries were excellent though more would have been nice, and instead of toast, I had a toasted home made kaiser which was great. In addition, our Americano coffees were just right. As an aside, Bread and Butter makes the best banana bread in the area.More

Looking for that bowl of traditional goulash, and maybe a schnitzel sandwich. Well, you have found the spot to do so at the Bread and Butter on Mount Pleasant. A great place to dine in for lunch or enjoy the covered Patton outside. Wonderful fresh...delights on their deli.More

My husband and I popped in for lunch one day when out for a walk. We both chose sandwiches from the specials board - meatloaf for me and chicken for him. Both were enormous, filled with roasted vegetables and salad and nice sauces. Huge fresh...salad on the side too. We really enjoyed it. Nice, but very strong, coffee served. Was safe to say we didn't need a big dinner that evening but we're very tempted by the German cakes in the counter - next time!More

I would say it’s possible if broken up into two parties of 6 and you’d need to call ahead.
