Hanging out in Montreal for business and it's dinnertime! I'm a huge fan of dining downtown because there are just so many choices so close to each other and it just makes things easy! Here's how dining at Ryú went! Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is BEAUTIFUL....It's an elongated restaurant with the most awesomely decorated ceiling. I wish I knew what all the 3D wooden crosses represented, but they were so cool. The bar rail/sushi counter stretches almost the entire length of the restaurant and looks so modern/futuristic. I can't stop harping on how much I loved the aesthetics in here. Service: Julie took excellent care of us as we sat at the sushi counter. Everyone knows that the bar rail or sushi counter is the best seat in the house! Lol. However, the food did take an excessively long time for some reason. Luckily the couple of Suntory Toki Whiskeys had me chilled out. Food: I'm a huge fan of when restaurants create unique Maki rolls so I checked out 2 today! First up was the Truffle Salmon Maki. In it is salmon, shiitake mushrooms, avocado, black tobiko, truffle oil, nori and spicy mayo. I didn't taste much truffle and there was a lot more shiitake in it than I had expected. However, the roll was still excellent and I could tell it was made with a high-level of skill. Next up was the Wasabi Scallop Maki. In my opinion this roll was better. It was a bit smoother, had a good bite from the wasabi and just worked better together. Value: ALL PRICES ARE IN $CAD. A "pour" of the whiskey I had was $18.00. The salmon maki was $19.00 and the scallop maki was $23.00. Absolutely worth it. The food is high-grade, filling and "felt" authentic, though I have never been to Japan. Lol. In conclusion, I loved it here and will absolutely be making another visit whenever I'm back in Montreal! Check this place out if you're in the area!More

There are much better choices of Japanese restaurants in Montreal, starting with Ryu Westmount, which is unfortunately closed at the moment. An absolute failure at Ryu Peel is the 'Omakaze', which we had the bad idea of ordering for 3 at the counter. For regulars...of genuine Japanese Omakaze, the experience was very disappointing. First of all, the service is not done on the counter as is customary, but on plates brought (slowly) by waiters who are only just friendly. For $150 per person you get a tiny plate of unremarkable sashimi, then unoriginal Makis, followed by a modest assortment of sushi whose fish was fresh but unremarkable. As your cook, contrary to usual, works for everyone at the same time, the waits are too long, so this was a very average Japanese meal, but by no means an Omakaze. Add to that an overpriced sake menu (the same names are much cheaper elsewhere) and you've got a bill of over $750 that's hard to pass up. On top of that, the same deafening, pointless music adopted by many Montreal restaurants makes it hard for diners to tell the difference between a restaurant and a disco. Impossible to recommend this place. CWMore

The sushi was nothing short of excellent. Each piece was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with fresh flavors. I would highly recommend the ‘Mr Maguro’ maki if you like tuna! The only thing worth noting is that the area advertised as 'the...terrace' turned out to be a roadside marquee, which wasn't quite what we expected. However, our waiter was incredibly accommodating and understanding. Despite the busy evening, they quickly found us a comfortable place inside where we could fully enjoy our meal.More

Riyu Sushi showcased an impressive repertoire of sushi dishes, each meticulously crafted to delight the senses and transport diners to the heart of Japanese gastronomy. From traditional favorites to innovative reinterpretations, the sushi offerings displayed remarkable artistry and attention to detail. The menu boasted an...impressive selection of delectable dishes. Vegetarian options abounded, showcasing a dedication to culinary inclusivity that was truly commendable. The expertly balanced flavors, enhanced by the accompanying dipping sauces, elevated the sushi experience. Each roll was a culinary art, from the classic California roll, elegantly marrying creamy avocado with fresh crabmeat, to the dynamic dynamite roll, featuring a tantalizing fusion of spicy tuna and crispy tempura. The nigiri sushi, crowned with glistening slices of raw fish atop perfectly formed mounds of rice, showcased the restaurant's commitment to honoring tradition. Our friends loved the melt-in-your-mouth quality of the fish, combined with the subtle sweetness of the seasoned rice. Among the standout dishes, the cooked hot Shrimp tempura emerged as a true triumph. Each bite revealed a delicate and perfectly crispy exterior, giving way to succulent shrimp within. For vegetarian enthusiasts, Riyu Sushi provides a delightful array of vegetarian sushi options. Vibrant and refreshing vegetable rolls, showcasing a variety of colorful vegetables, imparted a lovely crunch and a burst of natural flavors. The masterful incorporation of ingredients like cucumber, avocado, carrots, and mushrooms offered a satisfying alternative that didn't compromise on taste or visual appeal. The mushroom dumplings were great too. Riyu Sushi Restaurant in the heart of downtown Montreal presents an enticing haven for sushi lovers and those seeking vegetarian delights. With its delectable and imaginative offerings and a particular standout being the cooked hot Shrimp tempura, Riyu Sushi showcases a commitment to culinary excellence. Including excellent vegetarian options further enhance its appeal, catering to a diverse range of palates. For a fusion of flavors that harmoniously blend tradition with contemporary flair, Riyu Sushi proves to be a compelling destination for aficionados and newcomers alike.More

Food and atmosphere were great, but service exceptionally slow. We sat at the sushi bar and it took over 2 hours to complete our meal. It would have taken longer but we intervened with the server on several occasions. The time stamp of our order...was 1 hour earlier than everything else’s they were preparing at the Sushi bar, but when we raised this with the server she just wanted to argue with us and make excuses.More

Went all the way downtown to try this sushi restaurant but was very disappointed. Portions are small and way overpriced! I understand that to keep up with the rent downtown, the price must be high but again nothing special in the taste that cannot be...find elsewhere for a lot less in cost. Ordered the mochi ice cream dessert, totally ordinary taste and again way overpriced for three tiny mochi. I could have bought the whole box at Costco for less and would have taste the same or even better. Bottom line, do not waste your money or time at this restaurant not worth it!More

Judging from the excellent ratings, reviews, and location I felt like I was in for big treat. The almost horrible: Quiet for a Sunday evening. I booked using their online link earlier on Thurs evening and the selected date turned up only 2 time slots....My evening ending a bit earlier so decided to see if I could rebook for an earlier slot. Website now had 5 time slots. What? How did 3 slots open up? I can't believe 3 ppl decided to cancel. Just not possible with more than half the tables empty. Seats: comfy and allows for some private / quiet conversation. Where does one hang their coat? Winter is here so do we just lay coats on the seat? Server: Ambivalent. Came to tell us about the menu. Never came back for 20 plus mins. One of the drinks we ordered not available??? First rolls came in 5 mins without soy sauce??? Then waited about 15 mins for our second dish. Server came order to us last call for food and we had to ask for the second dish. No sorry "we missed your order" or explanation. Food: good but not great. For a higher end sushi restaurant they should be using real Wasabi not the paste crap. Ginger was old and tough. Sushi was ok. One of the rolls was on a soy sauce that was way too sweet (one on white plate). The rice in the second roll was a little dry (one on black plate). I don't know if this is typical for this establishment, bad night? Normally I would give a second chance and come back too see if my dinner was an anomoly. But Montreal has to many other great restaurants and competition to be worth the effort.More

The atmosphere and service at Ryu were excellent, but the quality of the food (both rolls and custom rolls) itself was below standard, both relative to American sushi places and other Asian restaurants we found later during our visit to Montreal. The stinger was the...bill, which was about 50% above what it would have been at comparable restaurants.More

A very average but expensive sushi restaurant. Four of us dined on the patio. The service was very slow . Drinks forgotten and although we ordered many different types of sushi, I found it all be just okay.

While sushis were excellent, the service made the experience average. Constantly interrupted by the waiter (Jacob) who was pushing us to finish our meal probably to free the table. We ate in 30 mins. Maybe we did not spend enough money for his taste (100$...for 2).More

So we entered Ryu with high recommendations from our hotel. We were ignored for a while and then someone who was the sake ‘specialist’ asked what we wanted because nothing on the menu was available. When asked what she recommended, she asked our price point…...the level of rudeness took me back. We said a dry sake and she proceeded to say we clearly don’t know what we like and sauntered off. Our waitress arrived. She had zero recommendations on food. We had a cocktail each, which were fine and then a bottle of wine. We ordered a few courses which were slammed down next to us. You don’t want to sit at the end of the bar - it’s the prep station/cleaning station. After ordering a few more items we were asked to move tables! We said no thank you and were insisted upon to move and we asked for the check and to leave. The limited sushi we had did not compensate for the level of rudeness, lack of AC and brazen terrible service. Be warned.More

What a shame, was very excited based on the reviews and recommendations we received. Really the issue here is price, and it is astronomical for truly mediocre sushi. If you do take the deep dive, the bluefin toro and king salmon are excellent. Avoid at...all cost the Oshizushi as the rice totally overwhelms the fish due to the proportions.More
