This was our second visit to Pastel and once again it was an amazing experience. The food at Pastel is original and spectacular. The taste combinations and the presentations are wonderful. We sat at the bar so that we could have a view of the...kitchen and to enjoy the attentions of the barman, Jonathan. His knowledge of the food, the information he provided us about the wines and drinks and his warm, professional manner with us (and the other clients) made our dinner a special occasion (although quite honestly, all of the staff were great and they all made us feel at home). It was a great experience and we are looking forward to our next visit.More

Went for dinner with family. The restaurant was very careful to ask about not only food allergies, but also particular likes and dislikes. We all had the ten course tasting menu and were blown away. The restaurant has a Japanese interpretation to dishes and each...course was inventive, tasty and very different in interpretation from the others. The wine pairing was good, and flexible enough so that they adapted the next wine according to our reaction to the previous one. Service was friendly. The explanation to each dish and each wine was super good and knowledgeable. The only (slight) disappointment was that one member of our party has the non-alcoholic drink pairing and these were a bit too odd tasting. Nevertheless, overall a superb evening, slightly pricey by Montreal standards, but absolutely worth every penny.More

Wonderfully designed and decorated restaurant. It features an open kitchen concept, which was a lot of fun. The food was exemplary from start to finish -- well choreographed, prepared, and presented. And so delicious! The staff was a delight to interact with -- knowledgeable, observant,...and accommodating in the best possible ways. We were a party of two enjoying the menu découverte experience on a Saturday evening. I highly recommend this restaurant, and I look forward to returning myself.More

My first experience at Pastel last evening was stunning! My partner and I enjoyed the Discovery menu with 10 imaginative and exquisite courses that were mouth watering and very memorable. There were too many standouts to mention but the black cod was for me the...best. We enjoyed sparkling water and a few cocktails with the meal and the cocktail ‘La Vie on Pastel’ was fabulous! Kudos to the talented and inspired members of the kitchen and our server Cleo was first class. Although not inexpensive, this meal was superb value and the quality is definitely on a par with Michelin starred restaurants that I have dined at. Can’t wait to return....More

There were four of us, and we opted for the 10-course tasting menu with wine pairings. The bill came to $1,500. How do I assess this restaurant? I guess one way would be to imagine that anyone who can blow $1,500 on dinner for four...probably doesn't even bother to look at the total before signing the check. But on the other hand, the reality is that in the real world everything must be assessed in the light of the price asked for it - even a $1,500 meal. The food at Restaurant Pastel is, let's face it, absolutely first-rate. The dishes are imaginative, varied, and make use of high quality ingredients, all prepared in an impressively open kitchen. I would suggest that, even with ten courses - plus a cheese plate - passing across the table, the portion sizes were just a little bit too small. I personally am a light eater, and even I found myself wishing for slightly more. This is compounded by the fact that a 2oz pour of wine comes with each course, so you end up drinking a lot more wine than you have food to digest with it. To be honest, if we'd opted for the 6-course tasting menu (the only other option) we might have had to call in elsewhere for a bite to eat on the way home. The wine pairings were very nicely done, for the most part, although there were a couple that I felt were total busts. But one in particular I will be looking to buy for my own cellar. For those who prefer to order from the wine list, prepare to be mightily disappointed. Those who spend $1,500 on dinner tend to have - shall we say - refined tastes in wine, and there is precious little on Pastel's wine list to appeal to the connoisseur. Most high-end restaurants have wine cellars that will put Pastel's to serious shame. Heck, there are quite a few cheap bistros around these parts that will handily do that. That said, overall (to my own taste at least), the selection of wine pairings at $90 a head scored high marks. Service was of a very high standard, and very much in the modern style - informal and not overly solicitous. No complaints there. In summary, I just can't get past that $1,500 price tag. For that kind of money I expect more than Pastel delivered. I expect food that blows you away rather than merely satisfies. I want to be thinking "Wow, I didn't know so-and-so could taste so good!", and I want to be thinking that for every dish that comes along. I don't want to be thinking "Yeah, that wasn't bad". I have had my mind blown several times at restaurants around the world, not only at this price point but also below it. In truth, Pastel didn't threaten to do that. So, in summary, a truly excellent restaurant, one which I would unhesitatingly and enthusiastically recommend were it at half the price. As it stands, I don't plan to return.More

I had the chance to discover the Pastel with my family. Everything was perfect in the details: the food, the wine and other alcohol, the music, the service, and the restaurant itself. I strongly suggest this amazing restaurant to everyone who is interested in discovering...local products and original ways of giving incredible taste to the food. Certainly a place where I will go again !More

Three of us dined here recently. We chose the 6 course menu. Gabrielle, our main server, explained the options and was quietly charming and efficient during the meal. The food was perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. Flavours were marvellous. Gabrielle helped us select a bottle...of Cotes de Beaune to accompany our meal. We watched the chefs preparing meals in the open kitchen on our way out of the restaurant-the attention to detail placing food on plates was amazing. This was a unique experience! Tables are spaced widely apart in this small restaurant, making it quiet and great for conversation.More

Not worth it. 1) they brought food that I am allergic to despite being very specific 2) the chef did not accomodate ANY request despite being allergic 3) good servers and environment 4) they may aim for excellence , but are far away to be...a modest restaurant. 5) the chef may be great but use cheapy ingredients. 6) I left hungry. Some may require to stop by in another place to grab some food. 7) there is NO way this restaurant is top 10 in Canada. Not even top 300.More
