The restaurant offers a prix fixe menu in one area of the facility and an a la carte in the front of the facility. We made a mistake and reserved two seats at the bar instead of a table but it turned out to be a fortunate mistake. The bartenders were very helpful and entertaining. We started with a delicious lobster appetizer and then I enjoyed bouillabaisse and my husband enjoyed duck confit. Our dessert was a different type of eclair and probably the best I have ever enjoyed. Highly recommend. Dinner, including 4 glasses of wine was $221.33 Canadian.

My wife and I visited Monarque in Old City Montreal on a Friday night during our vacation, and it lived up to the hype. We sat in the brasserie section near the entrance, enjoying the sleek, modern space with its cosmopolitan vibe. The ambiance felt effortlessly upscale—this place could easily fit among the top restaurants in Manhattan, Mayfair (London), or Miami. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant was busy but well-organized.
The food was excellent. We started with a warm, flavorful pretzel and a crisp, fresh salad, followed by two perfectly cooked strip loin steaks—mine with peppercorn sauce and hers with béarnaise—and an order of fries. All the dishes were simple and clean, with presentation and flavors that avoided unnecessary garnishes or tricks. The emphasis was on high-quality ingredients prepared with care, and it showed. While it’s pricier, the quality was exactly what we expected for a place of this caliber.
The service was another highlight. Our waiter was warm, attentive, and approachable. He was polished, cool, and professional without feeling overly formal or judgemental. Though my wine knowledge is limited, Monarque’s wine program looked extensive and thoughtfully curated for enthusiasts.
The restaurant’s layout is versatile. The front features a beautiful bar and smaller tables, perfect for intimate dining, while the back and basement areas, with views of the stunning kitchen, would be ideal for larger groups or special events. It’s a great spot for dates, business dinners, or celebrations.
Monarque delivered on all fronts—ambiance, food, and service. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience in Montreal.

I don't usually give any restaurant 5 stars but Monarque deserves it, even though the server was at first a little cool towards us and despite having a reservation it took 15 mins to get any service. After that, the dishes we were served were very impressive in their attention to detail and interesting, creative flavors. Quebec straciatelli, wild mushroom gnocchi, bouillabaisse were excellent, also good local cheese with local beverages (ice cider). Definitely need a reservation.

The menu has a fair amount of choices and the wine list is quite diverse. The waite staff is very attentive. That’s all I can say good about this restaurant.
The foie gras pate was absolutely tasteless. Sent it back. The octopus was ok, nothing to ever want again. The tuna tartare was also tasteless. The steaks were 3 out of 5 served at the wrong temperature and with the wrong sides. The steaks were small and without the bernaise sauce or butter would have been inedible. The sausage was ok. The ricotta ravioli was also tasteless.
I usually can trust reviews and I review so many restaurants around the world, we were severely misled about this restaurant.
Don’t go!!

In close to a month of dining in similar establishments across USA and Canada this was without doubt the best meal we had and the price was very reasonable.
Great service, friendly, helpful and attentive. Well cooked and presented food. Good balance between protein and greens. Perfectly seasoned.
Comprehensive wine list even if some were on the expensive side, you could still pick out some reasonably priced gems.
Servings were generous and I wish I had enough room for dessert because they looked fabulous.
Highly recommended but do use their online booking system because the place is very popular - for a reason.

I attended a dinner dining session at Monarque for a business meeting in late October 2023.
The food was adequate but I would not give it an “outstanding” rating. Portions for the plats main were not very large but quite honestly the prices aren’t outrageous.
Service was a bit iffy and our sever was a diminutive gentleman with a cheesy mustache who seemed to disappear for periods and we found ourselves looking for him throughout the evening.
There are many better places in the great city of Montreal so I don’t expect to retournez to this establishment in the future.

After changing our reservation from the dining room to the bistro on the recommendation of some people we met, two seats at the bar were graciously pulled out for our use. Monarque is a beautifully designed restaurant, cavernous, elegant and sophisticated, but oh so comfortable. The client is at the center of Monarque's universe. Serge, incomparable, professional, and exuding warmth, was our bartender/server par excellence. He turned our dinner from a meal into a memory. Yet, Monarque's kitchen doesn't allow the decor and hospitality to take center stage. The food at Monarque is trés magnifique. Yes, the menu might skew old school, but in the end, isn't it about taste? Alinea, the renown temple of creativity in Chicago, created food that was unique, but nothing tasted good. We left unhappy.
At Monarque, we started with the Gougères, rarely seen in North America. They are bite sized pâte à choux made with Gruyère. They are out of this world, and I could eat dozens of em. My ocean trout tartare was the perfect palate cleanser, light and refreshing. The indulgent Foie Gras parfait, paired with toast, was creamy and delicious. For our mains, we ordered the bouillabaisse and lobster thermador. Both were amazing, large portions, and had us slurping and smacking our lips.
Monarque's wine list is extensive and eclectic. My martini was mixed perfectly by Joanna, another gracious Monarque bartender.
Monarque is a wonderful restaurant. It isn't cheap, but it's well worth the outlay. Go and have a memorable experience.

I almost never give 5 star reviews. This one comes with no reservation. As such, we had no reservation but arrived at opening. They took us in with the agreement that we'd be out of there before 7:30p, when the place would be fully booked. Nice ambiance without being stuffy. The entire waitstaff was knowledgeable and efficient, yet wittily engaging. The portions were mostly to the larger end of "French " serving sizing. EVERY course was a shear delight! I mean that literally. The passion fruit Pavlova for dessert was indeed the crowning glory!

First the good… Octopus appetizer was very good, as was the base of the bouillabaisse entree. Star of the meal was no doubt the passion fruit pavlova dessert. Now the not so good… The lobster Thermidor was extremely disappointing. Half ( of the half lobster) was cauliflower. Did they think we would believe it was lobster? For $42 it should contain more than the minuscule amount of lobster in the dish. This inexcusable misstep was the impetus of me writing this largely negative review. No tablecloths, rushed service, confusing reservation system with a time limit. The only reason to go here is the dessert, Much better options out there

The staff here is very nice. I made one mistake, which is that in researching restaurants, one of the other restaurants we visited had "beer for the cooks" on the menu; I thought it was this restaurant, but it was a different one. But although I confused the server by mentioning it, he asked, "well, I could get beer for the cooks and put it on your bill--should I do that?" and we were so pleased with our food by then that I said, "sure!" And then three or four of the chefs came out to introduce themselves. They were very kind people. I was very happy to buy them one.
The oysters were excellent, and so was everything else. The stars of the show were the steak tartare, which my wife says might be the best she's ever had (we have it whenever it's on a menu), and the potatoes au gratin, which I loved soooo much. I noticed just enough thyme (at first I thought it might have been sage, but I'm 90% sure it was thyme) in it. Thyme is one of those herbs like dill or rosemary, where almost everyone who uses it seems to use too much of it. This is the first dish I've ever had that used just precisely the right amount. That was a huge dish, and I absolutely stuffed myself to finish it, but I finished every bite.
We loved this restaurant! We hope to come back.

I was happy to go to the Monarque, but unfortunately, it's okay, nothing more. In the dining room, for more than $400 for two, I expected to be more satisfied. In terms of service, nothing to complain about, thanks to our waitress Michèle. But in terms of portions, it's really very, very small, I know that's the norm in this type of establishment but here it's excessive, my deer was tiny. And the monkfish had to be turned over to finish cooking. But by wanting to make dishes where the mixtures of ingredients are complicated to impress, too often the flavors and tastes suffer... "Less is more" But the setting is superb.

HORRIBLE service and very regular food for the price you pay. The tables next to us got there after us and they got served all there meals and payed there bills before we got our main plate. The bone marrow escargots is extremely salty. The Fish and seafood bouillabaisse had 1 shrimp, 3 mussels, 1 scallop, a piece of fish and potatoes for $38 and nothing special. Anyway STAY AWAY. There is much better restaurants in the area.

A monarch butterfly floated by me on the shores of Lake Ontario that morning. Little did I know that later that evening I’d be eating at Monarqe having fantastic local Quebecois lamb for two.
We arrive just before 7pm and they were able seat us at the bar. Reservations recommended as the tables are beautiful but full. Nice cocktail and wine selection. A true epicurean delight!

We had dinner here for the first time last December when we were in town and found it a fantastic experience.
When we returned to Montreal this week, we made Monarque a must visit and we were not disappointed!
Once again the food, atmosphere and service combined for a memorable dining experience!
We have eaten in the dining room both times (3 course menu although you can order individual courses).
Next visit we will likely try the brasserie which has a different menu and a more relaxed atmosphere (but a higher sound level).
Not cheap, but definitely worth a splurge in Old Montreal!

I am truly shocked and so disappointed by how bad our meal at Monarque was this evening. It was honestly the worst and most over-priced experience I can ever remember having in a restaurant.
It all centered on having a newbie server with no common sense at prime time on a Friday night. She was clueless about every food and wine menu option. The timing of her taking our orders, the simple task of offering us bread and serving our food was just a total mess.
To make matters worse, the food was insanely priced yet totally bland and average (at best).
Yes, we addressed our issues with the manager who only made tired Covid-related excuses, but nothing to offset our horrible meal.
I am beyond annoyed by the pretentiousness and prices for this below average, in every way, experience. Especially when we were presented the $350 tab for two people who ate moderately.
