We stayed at the attached hotel (Hostellerie Pierre du Calvet). The restaurant is very good -- excellent service and atmosphere, and mostly great food. (My duck was a bit tougher than I would have preferred, but overall my wife and I thought the food was excellent).

Let me start by saying, I havd never written a negative restaurant review before. After having looked at the reviews on this restaurant I went with some friends for a special celebratory dinner. The outdoor patio was dingy, with cobwebs throughout and plastic tables. The food was abismal: the French onion soup tasted like dish water, the bread was akin... More

After visiting the sights of one of my favourite cities in North America, I found my way downtown to Old Montreal and I immediately felt transformed back-in-time to a Century long gone! I had discovered the Hotel Pierre Du Calvet (established 1725) and ensconced in this divine hotel is Les Filles Du Roy - the best dining experience ever! Translated... More

We had been recommended this restaurant by our hotel and wanted to have a nice dinner (Saturday, January 30). When we arrived there was one other couple and a party of three. The rest of the restaurant was empty, in an adjacent room there was a big party going on. We immediately found it rather chilly but hoped the room... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
