This restaurant was recommended to us by our host in Montreal. But be warned that Google Maps lists it as Restaurant Big in Japan and not Bar Big in Japan. These are two completely different locations about a block from each other. The "Bar" has a hidden door and is really hard to find, once inside it is very fancy... More

It's good, I had the tuna tataki, which was quite flavorful. Will go back to try some other entrees. I didn't necessarily like the mood, it's more like a diner.

Just what we were looking for on a cold Montreal day. Tasty flavorful ramen bowls with good vegetarian option too. Good service and fun ambiance.

With the growing number of Izakaya type restaurants in town, you really have to be good in order to stand out. In the case of Big in Japan, unfortunately it is not the case... The food and athmosphere are fine, but nothing to write home about. The service is very average; It took about 20 to 30 minutes to get... More

Very fun and nicely curated space- great ramen, interesting desserts, and fresh and interesting crispy pork with rice. Really helpful waitstaff.

Love this place! The Tuna Tataki is awesome! Crispy pork and Soups are very good also! This place is pretty cool and original... Hard to spot thought. The place lacks decor, fresh paint and some renovations but that's what makes this place original ... the food is awesome and that's why I come back ... if you plan to go... More

Man, did I miss opportunities to go here in the past and to make up for it I have now been here twice in the last three days. In the past I have been confused by this place. It is situated on the corner of Avenue des Pins and Boulevard Saint-Laurent. The entrance is on the latter with a small... More

Not truly Japanese and the 4 dishes we ordered came with mixed reviews. The tuna was perfectly cooked, the salmon was ok and the crunchy chicken was basically a chicken cutlet on rice. We really enjoyed the punch though. Service was ok.

Having coleslaw with Katsu don is an interesting local variation of a classic Japanese fast food dish but it was tasty. They use Chinese chopsticks and soup spoon instead the bamboo disposable ones but this might be easier to use for some. The Asahi Super-dry is truly Japanese. I would return if in the area again.

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
