My girlfriend and I randomly stopped here as we love pho and vermicelli and eat it often. The menu had what we wanted, the prices were normal ($9 medium pho, $10 verm), and it was plenty busy. A very pleasant surprise followed! The server attended to us immediately and brought complimentary tea. After the server explained what was in the... More

I had a small bowl of pho, which was plenty filling. Large sizes are available too. My friend had marinated, grilled pork over rice that he contends is one of the better versions of this dish he has had. I was pleased by the friendliness of the wait staff, a contrast to the somewhat brusque service I am used to... More

I was rather disappointed. I only had the pho, and the broth was tasteless. It was almost closing, but it's broth- it should be better at the end of the day. The round of beef was exquisite, however.... unfortunately, that's not so important, when the broth is merely the tears of children who aren't really even all that sad.

Walked in to Phobac 97 but the spiders by the atm deterred me. Crossed the street here & service was awesome, clean & delicious.

A crowded lunch place right on St. Laurent, very near old Montreal, attracted us right away. We both love authentic Vietnamese, and coming from Florida that cuisine is hard to find. We started with a Spring Roll order (5.50$C) and then two Bun bowls with pork (8.48 and 9.48$C). Both were excellent. We did need to order extra nuc mam... More

Their pho is brilliant. Not too salty. Light and comforting as it should be. DO NOT order their 3 colored desert. It tastes like beans in water with tasteless ingredients with a block of ice on top.

I used to go there because their soups (pho) are so full-flavored. Other dishes are also very tasty. Good price and good portions. La nourriture est savoureuse, fraîche et à excellent prix.

The place not to eat in Montreal. The place was virtually empty at 2 pm after the lunch crowd. As I entered I requested a table where I could open my computer. At least eight empty tables. The restaurant manager refused angrily, shaking his head and explaining that customers have to obey the rules. Then, with total smugness he said... More

Hi, we were 6 colleagues out for lunch in chinatown. It is on St Lawrence street near de la Gauchetiere. Easy to find and pleasant eating area. It es a lbit narrow but acceptable compared to other similar restaurants in the area. There is a nice choice of meals offered on the menu. Four of us chose soups and the... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Bakeries, markets, restaurants, and buffets crowd the brightly graffitied streets of Chinatown, the city's aromatic destination for pan-Asian cuisine. Distinguished at its entry points by towering vermillion paifang gates, the compact neighbourhood acts as a focal point for the Chinese community, hectic with educational facilities, cultural centres, acupuncturists, and foreign-language newspapers. Especially vibrant in the warmer months, when the sweet smell of dragon beard candy along the pedestrian walks of Rue de la Gauchetière signal the beginning of the outdoor street fair season, Chinatown is a treasure hunter's dream, with enough knickknack and curiosity shops to tempt even the pickiest shoppers. The convivial vibe picks up after dark, when the area's active nightlife offers evening crowds their choice of drink, dance, and midnight snacks of pho or oysters. Chinatown's mix of new and old, with herbal remedies being sold alongside pop-culture DVDs, gives the area its own animated brand of moxie.
