Holder is an institution. It doesn't need to try too hard. Tartars, oysters, steaks and good service (at times without a smile) are staples. Try it for brunch, get a table by the window and enjoy the moment in Old Montreal.

We went there on a cold night. The place was easy to find and had a great ambiance. Many vegetarian choices (aside from all the non-vegetarian) which was great. All food was excellent and so was the service. We arrived around 18:45 (6:45 pm) and the place really got busy around 19:30 (7:30 pm)

Great experience in this restaurant! I have been here several times with friends and family, always looking forward to eating the chèvre chaud and the homemade lobster ravioli. Friendly service and warm atmosphere, we will definitely be back!

By far my favorite restaurant in Montreal. Was there for New Years Eve, and actually the night prior! (It was so delicious the first night just had to go again). The staff were all so friendly and helpful. Just so nice (quite possibly a Canadian thing… But I'll take it!!!!). Sylvie, the restaurant manager was more than accommodating and made... More

Of course we tried French Onion soup (very tasty, not salty like some, slightly sweet taste ), I had beef bourgingnon (beef cheeks) melt in your mouth good on potato purée &... More

Wonderful ambiance. Great service and the perfect size menu. The portions were very large considering the price (a giant bowl of mussels and fries for $18 CAN). Would highly recommend

Me and my husband are big foodies. We love to try new restaurants and have been to several top 10 restos in Montreal such as Bonaparte, Modavie, XO at the St-James etc and we ALWAYS seem to come back here. I've tasted pretty much everything on the menu. I highly recommend the mozzarella, pine nuts and prosciutto salad with figs... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
