We had a late lunch at Holder which is on McGill Street near the old town. This is a brassserie with a modern feel, although a very French style. Lots of blackboards with specials and wine offers as well as the main menu. One of us had moules, the other had lobster ravioli and both very much enjoyed them, along... More

Do you want to have a great dinner? This is the place! It was pretty crowded when me and my husband went but the host was very friendly and got us a table in less than 5 minutes. I had the salmon which was AMAZING and my hubby had the filet mignon which was really good and a big piece.... More

This restaurant was highly recommended to us. It is a typical french restaurant which we thought would be fun. We arrived and the restaurant was very busy and loud. We were seated immediately. Shortly thereafter we found out that this restaurant does not alter their menu. They do not acknowledge dietary requirements, alter selections or substitute. They do not serve... More

Hello Mrs Marli, I am surprised by your review, as we DO accommodate many dietary needs, and do adjust meals accordingly. If you would be so kind as to call me to give me more information about what happened, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you and best regards, Maurice Holder 514 849 0333 More

Mainly OK, nothing special. Had the tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad as an entree. The cheese was on the dry side and the tomatoes were mus, the rest of the flavours were enjoyable. I was hoping for a a more exciting salad, considering the $14.50 price tag, which is an average price but should never be average in quality. I... More

Our group of 25 people had dinner at Holder and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The restaurant was a bit too loud but it was lively and vibrant. Their beef tartare was amazing!

My husband and I visited Montreal in late October for his birthday. On a recommendation from the staff at our hotel, Le Petit Hotel, we went to Holder for dinner. What a great experience! Without reservations, we were seated at a hi-top in the bar area, but it was great! I had the best duck confit that I have ever... More

This is a wonderful restaurant with brilliant cuisine - from the calamari starter to the gorgeously cooked swordfish - and a glass of Sancerre. A real treat in a buzzy and busy atmosphere and great, friendly service.

Delicious omelet on a cold and windy Montreal Sunday. Wandered in for a cup and to get out of a cold drizzle. To my delight I found a bistro with a traditional air. Accepted the writer's recommendation for a smoked meat omlet- the bonus was potatoes with herbs and whole grain toast. Over all a tasty start to my visit.... More

After being politely turned away for not having a reservation for a Friday night, we returned on Saturday with a reservation, and were seated immediately. The food was very good, with generous portions. Prices are moderate. Nice atmosphere ad excellent, friendly service.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
