I don't know why we didn't have dinner here, but my husband and I had cheese and a brown sugar/butter sliced ham appetizer with wine and it was AMAZING. I will be coming back here to have full meal next time in Montreal. The wait is very long and that is why I deducted one star. The place was PACKED... More

Busy noisy restaurant on very uncomfortable chairs. First off it's almost impossible to read the wine list and menu on the chalk board. Food is way overdone. Entrees were super rich and bland and the rib steak had more fat then meat and was not so tender. Dessert was equally bland. The only good thing was that the service was... More

The restaurant is warm and cozy. The menu hand-written in chalks on the wall gives pleasant homey feel. Though everything is in French, the very helpful staff translated the entire menu with his professional explanation and helpful tips, which made it a plus that we don't speak the language. The food was so fantastic to say the least. We ordered... More

Underwhelmed. I had the horse tartar, lobster spaghetti and apple millefeuille. I like the flavour of the tartar but it was chewy at times. It was served with some charcuterie meat that tasted a bit rancid. The lobster spaghetti was a very generous portion for $50. However, the pasta was made from dry product, not freshly made which I expected... More

We always attempt to follow the Bourdain path a gastronomic enlightenment. Has not failed our culinary zen yet. So if in Montreal then to Joe Beef for our pilgrimage to cleanse our palate and soul. Scored ressie's our first night in town. Just got to be persistent. Take any time that is open. You enter a working class shop front... More

I made a reservation almost two months in advance and could only get 9:45 PM for a Saturday night. We got there a little early and waited well over 30 minutes from our reservation time before we sat down. I will say they were very good to us during the wait so it didn't seem that bad. Someone came over... More

They must be listening to the reviews of how important they are... A business dinner for a group of four people - we had reservations for 6PM and were warned we should not be late. Arrived at 5:50 in the middle of a Montreal blizzard, and were told the restaurant was not open yet and would have to come back... More

I don't usually take the time to write a review, but I feel the need. I was very happy to get a table at one of the currently most popular restaurant in town. I was bringing my girlfriend out and we were hyped. When we got there everything seemed fine, exceptionally warm reception. We started with oysters, very nice, probably... More

Knowing in advance that it would be almost impossible to eat at Joe Beef, now ranked in the top 100 restaurants in the world, I made a reservation at their sister restaurant, Liverpool House. Arriving early, by taxi, in Little Burgundy, I wandered into Le Vin Papillon, a fabulous wine and daily changing menu. I was shown to the already... More

Staying in Le Sud-Ouest (Southwest District)

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Sud-Ouest (Southwest District)
Once the core of industrialised Montreal, the factories and historic buildings of Le Sud-Ouest have been renovated into homes, museums, and small businesses. The rejuvenated landscape has put its Saint-Henri district in vogue, with cutting-edge galleries and an ever-expanding network of restaurants. Foodies can especially delight in the mom-and-pop shops in Little Burgundy, or at the Atwater Market, where outdoor stalls sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat, street vendors have menus of hot fish and wine, and the indoor market offers chocolate, breads, and coffee beans. Dominated by the gentle waters of the Lachine Canal, Le Sud-Ouest is still very much an outdoor town, with a number of pedestrian-only bridges traversing the waters, bike paths along the canal with views of the Leisure Boats, and massive green spaces like Angrignon Park to stop for a picnic, or to play a sport.
