Long lines, while people wait their turn to enter bagel bakery.
People buy their out of the oven warm bagels to go and can also purchase various cream cheeses. There are 18 plus varieties of bagels. They are amazing bagels - light, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, hand rolled and baked in a wood oven, supposedly honey addition to batter gives them the slightly sweet taste. Montreal bagels are the best !
There is no place to sit down and eat.

Fairmount or St.V for bagels?? That is the million dollar Montreal question. The easy answer is... they both make great bagels and you won't be disappointed! But for my latest trip, I chose Fairmount and I wasn't disappointed. If you can't wait to get home (or back to your hotel), to sample the bagels, then you'll have to buy a tub of cream cheese and eat them on the sidewalk out front with the rest of the tourists. This is, after all, just a (great) bakery and nothing else. No seating, no fancy overpriced coffee, just traditional bread based greatness. As if you needed another excuse to visit the Mile End neighbourhood, this is it.

On our visit to Montreal ,we were told by many that we should try Montreal bagels. So on the recommendation of out Hotel receptionist we stopped at the Fairmount Bagel shop which happened to be near by as well. Small store with a line up out the door. the bagels are different , the taste is unique but a some flavors did not work too well with me. Worth a try .

We trekked from downtown to get a bag of Fairmount bagels. Apparently there’s something special about Montreal bagels in general but we’re not entirely sure what constitutes “special”, although Fairmount lived up to expectations of what a bagel should be. Round, chewy, different flavours to choose from. The shop is a small, hole in the wall kind of place. Anything more than 6 or so customers at a time would feel cramped. We got a mixed bag of different types to take home. All filled the void. Maybe we need training on being bagel connoisseurs, but we couldn’t honestly say that these were that much different than any others we’ve had from a grocery store. If you’re in the neighbourhood then by all means go and support a local bakery. But making a special visit is a bit of a stretch unless you have time, money and effort to spare.

We arrived just as the Sesame Bagels were coming out of the oven. No topping/filling or butter. Delicious.
Only take Cards if you spend $20 or more, ensure that you have cash if you only want a couple of Bagels. All the spreads are in fridges if you wanted to buy some. Definitely worth jt

There are two Montreal institutions for getting bagels – Fairmount and Saint Viateur. Since we had already visited Saint Viateur earlier, our host took us to Fairmount in Miles End. The bagels just came out of the oven so they were fresh and hot. Tasted so yummy: chewy and slightly sweet. The sesame gave it a nice mouth feel. It’d not fair to compare them to Saint Viateur for we bought these fresher. We can, however, proudly boast that we have tried both of Montreal’s finest.

Wanted to try Montreal bagels and this place came recommended. The line was fast moving and not long around 10am on a weekday. I wish I had looked up the place ahead of time to know that this place is *just* bagels. As far as I could tell there was no option to get a bagel with cream cheese or lox etc on it, just a bag of bagels and then containers of spreads. This was fine, I just wasn’t prepared for it. I’m from New York and this was definitely a different kind of bagel - sweeter, less fluffy, almost like a baked pretzel consistency. Tasty, but next time I’ll plan ahead!

We didn't realize that the location we went to (unsure about other locations) was a grab and go concept - no toasting, cutting, spreads, no sitting, etc. It was also cash only. Since we're visiting, we grabbed some bagels to go and bring home, which were hard by the next day even after we put them in a ziploc. We didn't get to experience them fresh or day of so we cannot speak to that, but they were fine enough. Nothing different than any other bagel from the store. Worth a visit to see if you enjoy. :)

Outstanding bagel with sesame seeds. You have to compare the two famous bagel shops and come to your own conclusion. More traditional than the St. Vieater, the bagel store around the corner. Once you eat these bagels you will never buy Lendels or any other frozen bagel

The Montreal bagel is superior to the New York style, and their bagels were fantastic! We went mid morning and you could walk in and smell them making fresh bagels! An amazing experience, but be prepared if you are a foreigner (I’m an American) - they only take Canadian cash or Canadian debit.

I knew this place has no seating, so I went on my own to buy and bring back bagels for my friends. They were great, but my friends did miss out on eating one fresh from the oven! The sesame was by far the best. I ate one right outside the shop and it was soft, warm, and flavorful on its own/without the need for toppings.
I wasn't aware of the card minimum (I believe 20CAD), so I ended up buying (and spending) way more than I needed. This wasn't a huge problem however, because the bagels are smaller than what I am used to in NYC and my friends and I ate multiple throughout the day! Our leftovers were still good (but not as good) the following day. They also sell tubs of cream cheese in different flavors, although nothing different from what you can get in the supermarket.

I’m absolutely team Fairmount when it comes to the Montreal bagel wars. The sesame seed is my go to since you’re almost always going to get a hot one fresh out of the wood fired oven, as this is the type they make the most frequently. The cranberry bagel was great too. The inside of the store is small, and there’s a line up sometimes as quite popular, definitely worth the wait though. Bagels themselves are the perfect amount of chewy and sweet. I don’t live in Montreal but I’ve visited three times now and I’m already looking forward to the next visit!

Went to Fairmont Bagels that first opened in 1919 and moved to its current location in 1949. Place is very small that sells a variety of bagels however the toppings for the bagels are sold in large containers. Had a delicious warm sesame seed bagel that had a hint of honey. Also had a strawberry chocolate bagel that was a bit on the hard side….it didn’t taste fresh. Best to bring cash for small orders.

Fairmount's bagels are very similar to St-Viateur's, with a uniquely sweet and smoky taste. I couldn't really tell a difference between the two. Fairmount's location is a bit smaller, and for some reason, they didn't have any individual packets of cream cheese. If you're going to St-Viateur, take a few minutes to walk over to Fairmount and try both!

I went there every day to get my Bagels fresh because it was so worth it. The flavor, taste, and quality is amazing and the prices are totally acceptable. Depending on the time, you might have to wait up to 25mins and it's cash or Canadian Debit only so make sure to bring cash but it is so worth it. I tried almost all of their bagels during my stay and was never disappointed!!!

A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde.
