Restaurant Le Continental is fine dining at its best. From the coat check, host (maître d'), lead waiter, and team of assistant waiters, everything was choreographed extremely well. The tableside flambé meals and deserts were a magical sensory experience to remember well into the future (Filet and whiskey shrimp).

Wow, what a spot. From the moment when you walk in, they offer to take your coat, so we could enjoy our dinner encumbered by our big heavy winter coats. We were brought to out table by the maître’d and we began our gastronomic adventure. From our table side fresh made caesar salad, skillfully prepared by our waiter, to our delicious steaks cooked right at our table. They have a great wine list at both ends of the spectrum. Our waiter was very attentive without being over bearing. Thos was not an inexpensive night, but it was worth every penny !

I’m happy to say that like the Grand Canyon or Crater Lake, Le Continental does not disappoint. If you’re on a quest to visit all the places Anthony Bourdain frequented, you must visit Le Continental. But especially if you have no idea who Mr. Bourdain was, you should still go for a dining experience that sadly is vanishing. I would argue the style of service practiced at Le Continental isn’t a lost art; it’s a dying art, and that is sadder. It’s not intimidating at all; the servers speak better English than most Americans, and the menu is varied enough that any non-vegan should be able to find something edible, and it’s a fun experience that is slowly vanishing. Experience it while you can.

Reservation made at Continental but service provided at a down grade side restaurant. Excellent bisque and Crêpes Suzette (served at the Continental once mistake was identified!). Newburg sauce shrimps were overcooked and served with a minuscule amount of sauce. No excuse for the mixup and the poor quality of the main course.

Usually, the Continental prefers not to respond to the comments written by customers on the Tripadvisor platform, although we read them regularly. However, in this case, it seems important to us to specify a few details regarding this notice, because it seems inappropriate and unjustified. The reservation had been taken at The Restaurant Le Continental (26, St-Louis Street), but the customers went to the wrong restaurant, that is our neighbor (32, St-Louis Street), where they had their meal. They didn't notice they were in the wrong place. When they noticed the mistake, we were happy to welcome them to the Continental for dessert. Customers seem to have been left with the impression that it was a voluntary decision from us, at Continental, to put them in the wrong place, however, we do not consider ourselves responsible for this mishap as they simply were not at the right address.

We chose this restaurant because it’s been around for a long time, is classic French style cooking, and Anthony Bourdain had been there and built it up. The main problem started when I was looking at the wine list. A waiter, who I thought was a sommelier came over and immediately suggested a particular Cabernet Franc red wine (red is what we wanted), without even asking us what we were having for dinner. I told him I would like a French Cabernet Sauvignon to go with our Chateaubriand. He said that would be good, then left. A little later our waiter came over to ask us about our wine choice. I said that another fellow had suggested one, but I was interested in a Cab Sav. He then disappeared and came back and suggested exactly the same wine, so I ordered it ($125), thinking they must know their wines. End result was that we got a so so red which was a bit tart on entry and a bit bitter on exit, but ‘OK’. To their credit they asked how I liked it and I said it was ok, so they said they would replace it if I liked. Not wanting to be a sh__ disturber I declined. The Chateaubriand for two? Again, mediocre. A filet cut with mushroom sauce which had been cooked in the kitchen, then a showy flame thing at the table for a minute to finish it. Both meat and sauce were mostly bland. Conclusion: the waiter was too busy running around cooking for 4 tables to do a good job. They need to take more time to listen to the customers desires for wine. More show than substance!

We were staying at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Le Continental was just right up from our hotel. We walked in on Saturday February 8, 2020 with no reservation. We had the most amazing meal and the best service. My husband had the veal chop (he said the best he has ever had) I had the veal medallions with Fois gras which was amazing! The table made Caesar salad was incredible. If your in QC definitely go here you won’t be dissatisfied.

This was our third visit and we wanted to introduce our friends to this fine restaurant. We all enjoyed the atmosphere and the attentive service. The Caesar Salad for 2 was outstanding unfortunately the chateaubriand for 2 was not medium rare as requested. The potatoes were cold and appeared to be just reheated. The other couples entree off duck ala orange was overdone as well. Dessert and the Brazilian Coffee were great

We celebrated our Christmas Eve with dinner at Le Continental. It was a glorious way to enjoy the the season. The five star service and attention was beyond reproach. Our fellow guests were a mix of locals and tourists, almost all dressed for the occasion. We wanted to savor the evening, by eating one course before ordering another. Our waiter, who was really also our chef, guided us attentively, yet discreetly through each course with recommended wine parings. His presentation and cooking skills were impressive. I asked him how he could so gracefully float between tables and so perfectly prepare each dish. He said he has been working there for 25+ years. From the looks of his colleagues that is the norm, with the next generation assisting the white costs while wearing their red coats (in training?). We started with beef carpaccio, melt in your mouth tender. My husband had the filet mignon, perfect and I chose a holiday special appetizer of langostines in hollandaise sauce for my main. All to finish with a shared slice of cream puff pie (I cannot remember the actual name). Truly a special experience. Expensive, for sure, but worth every cent. Highly recommend for a special occasion.

If you are looking for a delicious fine dining meal with family, friends or just a romantic night out, look no further than Le Continental. From the moment you walk into the restaurant your are treated with the utmost respect and you know you are in for a great meal. The restaurant has a coat check which is great for travelling in the winter. The wine list is QUITE extensive. It has everything from a fairly priced bottle of wine to something for a special occasion. To start, get the Caesar Salad. That sounds very vanilla for an order but trust me you will not be disappointed. The dressing is perfect. All of the food is cooked table side. We shall had the steak and it was cooked to perfection right in front of us. Normally, restaurants at this price point have small portion sizes but those did not disappoint. We all left not feeling over full but we also did not feel like we didn’t eat enough either. Would highly recommend this place but it is definitely a place that you would head to knowing that you are going to pay a high price for high quality food and high quality service.

We arrived for early dinner at 5 pm on a Friday and it wasn't too busy. I ordered veal medallions and honestly it tasted and looked like pork (first time trying veal). From what I saw from other patrons who ordered steak by flambe, I thought their food was being cooked a bit too long (they had arrived before me but when we were done our mains, their food just finished cooking) but I wouldn't know for sure. I was really craving a table side flambe show too at that point, so I ordered crepes suzette for two and it certainly delivered. If you come here without getting flambe, you're probably going to leave disappointed. You really get to enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant and admire the shows they put on. Servers are constantly around and on standby which is honestly a bit overbearing and makes you feel obligated to tip a lot, but service is topnotch. They serve complimentary bread and butter and when we were just almost done with our first basket, they came around with a second one. My friend also accidentally spilled her drink and they replaced it at no charge (maybe her speaking in french played a part too, haha).

Trust me, you can have meals just as good or even better in QC (try Champlain or Aux Anciens Canadiens) without having to subjecting yourself to the worst customer service experience you'll ever encounter. In no other restaurants, lower or upper-scale, I've been too have I experienced so much attitude from the staff. They were beyond rude and condescending. I called to simply ask if I can push back my reservation and they instantly responded by saying I need to respect the hours of the restaurant as they want everyone to have the full 2hrs window - could not have just said no sorry we can't do that like any other restaurant? While serving, one waiter in particular kept rushing us to finish out meal when there were still 45mins left in our window - I thought they wanted everyone to have the full 2hrs? Also saw that same waiter do an eyeroll when my brother called him after he had just left our table because he forgot to ask for something. I can try to understand that can be inconveniently annoying, but in an upscale restaurant like this, that's really not acceptable. My mom also doesn't speak English well and when she tried to talk to him he just did not respond to her or even try to make conversation. Overall, just don't come here, the service is really not worth anything else.

The Continental has been our go-to place for over twenty years. We try to make the pilgrimage at least once a year, which is sometimes challenging at we live 812 km (505 miles) away in Toronto. Sometimes , when in Montreal, we even add the two and a half hour trip and extra night in Quebec City specifically to enjoy dinner there. There are many factors which contribute to a great restaurant, but, in my mind the two most important are consistency and service. Here Le Continental have it in spades. Over the years, a few waiters that we knew have retired but we have always enjoyed a professional yet entertaining evening. If it is your first visit, there are a few ‘don’t miss’ things to order. The Caesar Salad , made freshly at your table is outstanding. The flaming Irish Coffee, also custom made at your table, is outstanding. When I was there in June 2020, I had three but you may be satisfied with one. Over the years, we have tried most of the mains and all are extremely good. Lately , we have been creatures of habit and order the peppercorn steak and the salmon, both really good. If you are planning on going, be sure to book ahead as they are always busy and great service takes time. We have already booked for next month for our first post-lockdown extraganza. It is excellent value for the food quality, dining experience and the evening’s enjoyment.

This is my first 5-Star rating ever but I can't say anything bad about my recent dinner experience. From the time you walk thru the front door, Welcomed by the maitre'd, greeted by your waiter, and sat in awe at the attentiveness of all the staff, you just have to say, "WOW!" I have not experienced this level of service in all of my travels. Anyone who rated this average or below probably ate at a different restaurant. This establishment is about a 2 minute wake from the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. Now on to the experience. I ordered escargot to start and of course it was great. While I enjoyed my escargot my waiter prepared my Caesars Salad table side explaining each of the process and ingredients. Then I got to enjoy my salad while my waiter started my Shrimp Flambe (table side of course). After cooking my shrimp and explaining the process and adding the lobster bisque sauce he took the time to place each shrimp up as if they were standing up. I watched my waiter take care of 3 other tables in the same 1st class level of service. He watched every table and knew exactly when to start each of their meals in a timely manner. Not one person had to wait or ask for anything. Even the support staff watched intently each table waiting to be of service. You will NOT regret taking the time and spending the money on this fabulous EXPERIENCE. Not just the food but the whole Experience... Little pricy but WORTH every penny...

This restaurant offered amazing food and impeccable service. I have nothing but praise for all aspects of the meal, drinks, and service. In these unique times that is not enough. The restaurant is compliant with all observable health regulations. Compared to their competition, however, their precautions are at the minimum required. Some of my comments will be damaging to the experience but decisions are being made that increases risk. We came in close contact with at least 8 staff which are circulating. This adds to the impeccable service but circumstances give reason to change this practice. Additional plastic screens would be an improvement. There was modest table spacing but some areas of the restaurant there is less than 2m separation with the apparent rationale being diners are facing away from each other. I could smell the steak of our neighbors for 15 or 20 minutes. It smelled delicious. . . but it means we are sharing the same air. There was a sort of a split between the dining room but it is around 100 guests and staff between the two. If you are reading this post pandemic then the problem is gone and you should not hesitate to eat here. If you are reading this during a COVID-19 peak then you should be cautioned that the restaurant is higher risk. I am aware my comments are not constructive. The only way to fix this will mean a major hit to the bottom line or service. This is tough but you should know what you are getting into.

Had heard so much about it that we reserved a nearby hotel. Had a 9:30pm reservation so the restaurant was not crowded. The reception and ambience were good and the service too. Were expecting something special and the shrimp cocktail appetiser was rather good. We ordered the Chateubriand beef for two and at $96 we were expecting something really special. Asked for 'à point' which the waiter confirmed as medium. Unfortunately it was overcooked, tough and a great disappointment. Fortunately the crème brulée desserts were good. Frankly $96 or a substandard piece of beef is ridiculous. Won't go again.
