My rating: 4.5 stars. Chez Mathilde is very popular and reputed to be the best restaurant (with highest prices) in Tadoussac. We ate there yesterday – at the only slot open for a reservation in the entire week we were there (a 5 PM seating). They have 4 set menus and they seemingly vary them so some degree by the whim of the chef (one is vegetarian – NOT vegan – and another is foods from the sea). Our dishes were beautiful presented – 4 courses that were all small but very good (2 of the menus have 5 dishes and cost a bit more). Our wine cost $60 (mid priced on their menu), was a private import from Spain, and was excellent. The only problems were with the before dinner drinks – they didn’t have key ingredients for both drinks we ordered (one the drink of the day, and the other a very basic liqueur) – the reason they didn’t get our full 5-star rating.

The restaurant and atmosphere is simple, in a very casual, touristy small town. Expectations were not high despite being recommended by some local friends. But then you are served your fixed menu of 4 or 5 courses and suddenly you realize you are experiencing very unique, well prepared, creative plates. One of the top meals I have had in the past several years. Definitely recommended for the food. The service is friendly, but average. The atmosphere is very relaxed and un-fancy. Frankly, a little tight on spacing for COVID-19 (without any plastic of plexiglass dividers seen in many other restaurants). BTW; one of the 4-course menus is all vegetarian (and good!). Wine list is average. Overall value is good/fair for the evening.

Located in a small and unassuming house, Chez Mathilde offers a truly memorable dining experience. I LOVED the casual and inviting decor and ambiance while serving the most interesting, fresh and delicious food I've ever tasted. When we were there, CM offered a menu that featured either, a land-based (meat) focus; a sea/food focus or a vegetarian focus. You could choose one 'experience' that would feature 5 different dishes. Each course was accompanied by a description provided by our enthusiastic server. All the ingredients are locally sourced (the crab I had was caught that morning) and several of them were foraged. Just nothing like I've ever had. If you have a big family or even a small family that eats large quantities of whatever, then this place is probably not for you. Granny's Buffet it isn't! Each of our five courses was small and beautifully served. PLENTY of food, because it was all very rich, for me and all in my group. But, I raised two boys who did love loading up their plates at a buffet. This wouldn't have been great for them... just delicious. It's also a bit pricey, but then you're getting the best ingredients prepared individually in an artful way. I read other reviews complaining about rude service. We had the opposite experience. Helpful and friendly for us. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

To keep it short, food was good but very overpriced. Service took forever, at least an hour before we got our first course of the 5 course tasting menu. By that point my enthusiasm had all but left me for the meal. The pace did pickup after the first course but still took too long. The manager seemed to think we would be okay with a never ending meal because we were on vacation... At the end of the meal, my fiancé was still hungry in spite of me sharing one of my courses with him. All in all if you still decide to go here in spite of the multiple comments I read afterwards recommending the place next door, I do recommend the wine pairing option since they were very excellent and the highlight of my meal.

There was much hype about this restaurant, so we had high expectations.
. Although each one of our plates was very tasty and well presented, At $60 per person for the table d’hôte,
We were quite disappointed in the very small portions, we left feeling hungry, and we are not big eaters!
For dessert, it was a disappointing chocolate pudding with whip cream… Not five-star dining worthy

Definitely not for families. Not worth the money. Strict bare minimum service and tiny tiny dishes (not even appetizer size). Tourist trap. You leave feeling like you haven't eat dinner yet. Not a place for families. It is more for couples on their fist date and eating is not the main goal.

We had the 7 course tasting menu. Every course was excellent and I’d really recommend this menu. The dishes are different from what you see on the a la carte menu so you don’t know what you will get which adds to the experience. Matched wines were really good and worth taking. I would definitely give 5 stars for the food but we had to wait for 15 minutes outside before being seated despite having a reservation and the front of house staff was a little off hand. Our main waitress though was good. It wasn’t an issue for us but portions are small and you don’t leave feeling full.

Made reservations at the chef’s bar and the experience exceeded my expectations. Food and wine were excellent but what really made the experience was the service and the genuineness of the interactions. There was pride and true passion in the preparation and presentation of the food and drink without a hint of any pretentious. Food foraged from the forest had unique presentations and there was an ongoing theme of using the whole food creatively and not being wasteful. People complaining about the prices in these reviews don’t understand the cost of quality ingredients or appreciate the time involved in preparing these menu items. Can I give this place 6 stars???

What a wonderful experience! You don’t expect to find such innovative food in such a remote location. The 5 course ‘blind menu’ was full of novel dishes building up to a perfect ‘main course’ of venison. The service was excellent with every course being carefully explained. This is a foodie place and unashamedly so. The food matches with the best that Europe can offer and coming from the UK compares with Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel, Lake District.

I don't usually write bad comments but here. ...
Very disappointed with my second experience....☹️
However the first one was great tlm 👌🤤
The 2nd time we went there we were advised of a new tasting menu... Chef's choice... Land, sea or vegetarian... no choice in each of the selections so for $96/pers and C the chef who chooses what we eat...
No a la carte menu...
They had a choice of a table d'hôte for two with flank steak but they had more that evening....
So no choice but to take the chef's choice tasting menu for $96/person.
Please restaurant CheZ Mathilde, advise on your website and remove your a la carte menu if you are unable to serve it...
Vrm very very very disappointed with this menu imposed without warning....

Travelled to tadoussac for whale watching and had a recommendation from a local for chez mathiide. Friendly, knowledgeable and warm service - cozy atmosphere and setting. Our seats were on the screened in porch that includes heaters and blankets so we could have fresh air but stay warm. The food was exceptional - creative, imaginative, local ingredients and excellent wine list. The dessert was a bit of theatre to end the evening - spectacular! Wish this spot were in my home town.

We have been at Chez Mathilde for a 6th consecutive year to experience the culinary experience of the menus of the Grande Côte and the St-Laurent, accompanied by the food and wine pairing. We were seated at the kitchen counter and it was the chef himself, Jean-Sébastien who served us, what an experience to experience the atmosphere of the kitchen! Once again, the dishes tasted as spicy as each other, what a culinary innovation! What an incredible and unforgettable experience! See you next year Jean-Sébastien and Mireille!

With three of us, we were able to have one of each of Chez Mathilde’s blind tasting menus: land, sea and vegetarian. All the courses were throughly novel and exquisite. Possibly the only time I’ll taste surf clam feet or lichen (both worked just fine). The two people who had wine pairings were enthusiastic about the quality and how well they complemented the dishes. Small glasses meant that over five courses one drank about 2.5 regular glasses of wine: judge for yourself if you can manage that.
The servers explained everything thoroughly. Really, every course was a winner and we had a lovely time. Well worth the price.
There was a pianist who played a quiet set. Very pleasant.

Dishes not served at the same time.
Starving portion given the very expensive price.
A lot of trouble for not much.
A restaurant against the Tadoussac spirit: lack of simplicity and authenticity.
Indeed you either take the 5 signature dishes (98 dollars can) or you take à la carte to lighten your wallet but you lighten your stomach.
Friendly and friendly welcome on the other hand.
