Road weary, I stopped for gas at a complex that contained a Carrefour, a couple of other businesses, a gas station and car wash with a generous parking lot to connect them all. Tucked away in the corner of the complex was a breezeway and...La Condamine Brasserie. As I was driving away I happened to take note of the simple tables outside where all the patrons seemed to be smiling, laughing, jostling each other around and I was compelled to pull into a parking spot and go in for an early lunch. As I approached, people actually nodded to me unobtrusively and kept on having a nice noon meal together. It is a neighbourhood hangout! I wanted to sit inside to avoid the eternal cigarette smoking that goes on outside and to my astonishment saw a big beautiful salad bar, and abundantly filled food plates coming out of the kitchen in the hands of a cadre of smiling waitresses and waiters. The bartender was joking and laughing with everyone in a most pleasant way, lots of chit chat with his regulars. My salad was the best lunch I'd had, the 'Paysanne' with bacon, fois gras, lots of fresh vegetables and lettuce with a poached egg on the top and surrounded by croutons topped with fresh tomato slices and herbs. This little place came out of no where and I think it merits a visit as you make your way through the area (I was going between the Dordogne and Aix-en-Provence). After the excellent lunch I was able to go to the supermarket and get all the souvenirs I wanted at a fraction of the cost as many of the touristy traps (though they need to make a living, too!) - things like gray Normandy salt, red Carmague rice, my favorite tea, and a few other little things. Enjoy it and tell the waitress who speaks English, a lovely gal who sports darker skin and hair, that you read about La Condamine Brasserie from a review on Trip Advisor.More
