We had a nice late lunch here on a flying visit through Betty’s Bay. Restaurant was accommodating given we were coming in late, based on usual lunch hours. Food was of a high quality. Very nice coffee and dessert. Laura gave us some great info and insight regarding the local area. Always find these brief chats one of the more rewarding aspects of travel. Hope we will be back one day. Don’t forget to give the dog Ginger some love If you do go.

We had family dinner on Sunday night, 17th of Dec and ordered the grilled Fish & Chips and Classic Beef Burgers with Mozzarella.
The food was well prepared and presented and really tasty.
The restaurant also serves locally produced craft beer.
It might have been our first restaurant meal in Betty’s Bay but I would strongly recommend Jack’s.

Laura took us in at 10 pm after we had a very bad experience at another guesthouse in the area, she was absolutly amazing from the moment we walked into Jack's. She made us feek right at home.
The room we stayed in for 2 nights (nr4) was clean, neat and had a great vibe to it.
We also ate dinner at the restaurant one of the nights and have to add, the services was phenomenal, the food so tasty and the vibes were just right.
Laura also loves telling lots of stories and loves to educate you on all the history of the bay. I loved that so much, just the way she speaks about everything with so much excitement, is something everyone should experience...
Do yourself a favour, and book your next stay here, you will not regret a single second

Ordered Betty’s bay chicken baguette ( the house special) and burger and chips because there was very little on the menu. Quality of food very poor. No butter on the baguette, tasteless mayonnaise, cheap tasteless cheese and barely any chicken and one slice of ham. This was their speciality dish!
As for my burger - the least said the better ...I thought the burger was actually off.... had an unusual taste to it and it wasn’t a good taste. I quietly had discussion with the manager of the restaurant that I was concerned the burger was possibly out of date but she had a taste of my left over burger that I couldn’t eat and she pronounced it fit for human consumption and assured me it’s not off but it’s a special blend of homemade burger! Well I certainly say I have never experienced such a “special” taste. She charged us full price which we payed as the complaint wasn’t to gain but to give them heads up that there could be potential the food was out of date. Needless to say it was a bad experience all round as the menu and venue was devoid of any character or inspiration. Could not recommend. Shame as we were looking forward to lunch.

To put this review into context, firstly let us discuss the lady’s concern when she was with us.
I am very careful to use the word ‘concern’ as she certainly did not make a complaint to me, so this vitriolic post comes as somewhat of a shock.
When I went to collect the plates from the table, the lady indicated to me that despite eating 95% of the burger she thought it tasted ‘funny’ and wondered if it could be off. She apologised for eating almost the whole burger, but she said she was hungry. Always being concerned that something had gone awry (mistakes do happen) I took away the postage stamp piece of burger remaining on her plate and tasted it myself. It was exactly as it should be.
I went to talk to the lady to reassure her that the burger was not off as I did not want her to worry, and gently explained that ingredients with many different flavours and tastes went into the making of the burger and maybe they were not to her liking. I understand that we can’t all like everything and I respect that some flavours do not appeal to some people, but to call the freshness of my food into question is something I am at pains to correct and quickly.
With regard to her bill, believe me I am the first person to credit a customer if any of our dishes are not served up 100% as they should be. She was charged the full amount for the burger: there was nothing wrong with it and she ate it.
So, now to the rest of her complaint here on Tripadvisor which I genuinely believe has been thrown in just to add weight to the burger story- as none of the rest was mentioned when she was here.
She calls into question the ingredients of the Chicken Betty and for me this is where she loses any credibility as a reviewer because here she maligns a dish that has been perfected over time and is popular because it is served up consistently ever single time….In fact she couldn’t have got it more wrong and anyone that knows me will agree I never miss an opportunity to talk about my food, so I am thrilled to share with you the high quality ingredients that go to make The Betty so popular. This sandwich has been on our menu almost from day one (11 years) and for good reason as people return again and again to enjoy it. The inside of the baguette (baked here in our kitchen) is coated with Nola Ultra Creamy mayonnaise – the top end of the mayonnaise market, made with only oil and no water. The cheese is Parmalat Mature Cheddar and at over R130 a kg is certainly not cheap or tasteless. One and a half chicken breast filets poached in lemon juice are sliced and added along with a large slice of gypsy ham to complete the picture with a dash of Mrs Balls… yum yum and certainly her companion thought so, as he ate the lot.
We try our best here at Jack’s, we don’t get it right 100% of the time and are the first to make corrective action when need be.
This lady didn’t get the answer she wanted when she was here, even though the answer I gave her was the truth. The truth is often hard to swallow when you are wrong.

We dropped in for a coffee and a snack while visiting Betty’s Bay and were pleasantly surprised by the warm greeting. The coffee was excellent which is a good start and a varied and interesting menu made it difficult to choose so we ended up deciding on the baguettes and were delighted with what was served. Top quality fillings and flavours, we will definitely be back!

What with COVID and life in general, sadly (for the businesses/economy obviously but also for me!) restaurant visits haven't been a regular thing in the last while. What a relief to head back to Jack's and find the service and food still so welcoming. My beef burger was just as good as I remembered from a previous visit, and my daughter's empty plate said the bobotie spring rolls hit the spot. We took the baked cheesecake home (makes an awesome breakfast btw for those like me who don't save enough space for desert while still there!) but couldn't resist a hot chocolate to finish the meal (I still prefer the Italian hot chocolate, my daughter still insists the Belgian is the way to go)
Thank you Laura for the service. We enjoyed our meal out and are so glad Jacks is still here and going strong after this trying time

A relatively new addition to Jack's menu is the Cold Chicken Salad. I have *never* had such melt-in-your-mouth soft chicken in a salad before. The portion is perfect, with a mix of avocado, feta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, black olives and lettuce. A dash of balsamic and olive oil and your tastebuds will sing. This is my Summer favourite for sure. Service is always excellent.

We had lunch there. The food was next level. Just loved the apple pie. Best I have tasted A lovely warm friendly welcome made you feel at home and relax instantly. Even the beautiful little rescue dog came accross with happy doggy greetings.

I highly recommend this Restaurant for a meal or cake and coffee. The hot apple pie served with ice cream was divine. The friendly service, with Laura's personal touch, made us feel at home.

Good place to stop en route to or from Hermanus. We ate on the balcony which has great views of the coast. Coffee is good recommend the French toast with a generous three slices of lean bacon. Mine hostess is an expert on local history. Ask her who Betty was.

When we walked into the empty restaurant, we should’ve known something is wrong with this place. When we got our food it became clear…
Where is the chef?
They even messed up simple fish and chips.
Would not recommend this restaurant at all.

It would seem that this reviewer has not understood the dual purposes of Tripadvisor: Firstly to give information that can be of use to the general public so that they can make an informed choice of where to dine and secondly to alert the establishment where they went wrong so they may improve. What is was never intended to be was a platform to vent because one was not bold enough to address the issue when it took place. This review is of no use to anyone and even if I wanted to implement improvements I would not be able, given the lack of detail. So I have two things to say - not all restaurants can be busy all the time, someone has to be the first to arrive and the Chef? well he's in the kitchen.

This is the second time my father and I have eaten at this establishment. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere from the moment you walk in. The food is delicious and the views are superb. While I live in the uk, I grew up visiting my grandparents at Betty’s Bay so love this part of Cape. I cannot recommend this place enough. And we’ll be back soon.

Really friendly atmosphere and Laura was a wonderful host bring the 'Jack' of all trades front of house.
And an amazingly small world as Laura and I lived a few streets away from each other in SE London many moons ago.
Was meant to be that I was drawn to this restaurant!
