I think I might have to go out for Shanghai food more often. We started out with hot and sour soup. The combination of spicy sour and savoury is just soooo good. And I loved the crunch of the bamboo shoots and black fungus. Their sheng jian bao (pan fried pork buns) are just awesome. It’s a thicker bun that’s similar to a steamed bun but pan fried. Also filled with juicy pork which is just magic! We also decided to get their shrimp crab claws. They are MASSIVE and puffed up like a balloon fish. They tasted great and I could have used just a bit more salt. We also had deep fried duck with a taro batter?!? Surprisingly good! Loved eating here and will need to be back soon :)

Soup dumplings steamed and pan fried are freshly made on-site. Very delicious. Spicy beef noodles are al dente in a rich spicy broth. Stir fried rice sticks were quite good as well. Good service in a pleasant but loud dining room. Busy on the weekends.

this time we went as a family, ordered beef brisket light stew, soup dumpling, wonton soup with chicken, and a spicy fish. the spicy fish was the highlight with ultra tender fillet topped by minced spicy pork. it's not an easy dish to make. the soup dumpling is always fantastic. one of my absolute favorite restaurants in vancouver.

While ordering, waitress told us the soft shell crab was recommended, only $29. We decided that since this was pretty cheap for soft shell crab, to order it. Upon receiving the bill, we were surprised to see an $82 billing for the crab, and when we asked the waitress about it, she told us $29 was for a pound, not what we ordered. Very dissatisfied with this experience.

We ordered a crab, which our server told us was 29 dollars. Not a bad price for crab! But it turns out that they left out a critical piece of information (intentionally, in my opinion, since I even asked to clarify the price). It turns out the crab costs 29 dollars PER POUND. The entire crab cost over 90 dollars... I feel like I’ve been scammed. Guests beware. Other than that, the food was mediocre at best.

I eat primarily at Cantonese restaurants, but close friends of ours invited us to Shanghai River Restaurant in Richmond and the food was incredible! We started with hot & sour soup which was not as vinegary as typical hot and sour soups. The mild taste allowed the mushrooms and bamboo shoots to shine through. Nice way to start dinner.

As winner of the ‘2024 Vancouver Best Chinese Restaurant Award - Shanghainese food category’. I approach our luncheon rendezvous at this award recipient with high hopes and expectations! Our meal started off with a huge and impressive bang! The arrival of one of my most favorite Shanghainese Dim-Sum - “ Fried/Baked Shredded Turnip Puff “ looked refined and gorgeous. The generous, savory filling of shredded fresh turnip threads, diced house-cured salted pork and pickled turnip bits was juicy and absolutely delectable! What a fantastic start! Sadly, things started to deteriorate and went downhill from there.! Unlike the near perfect rendition we had at Yuan’s Garden a few days ago, the ‘Drunken chicken’ we ordered here was bland and one dimensional tasting, the wine marinade, diluted and under seasoned, the chicken appearing dull and unattractive. Based on our server’s input that wild Warsaw Grouper filet is used for their ‘ Braised white fish in wine sauce and black fungus ‘, my ordering of this favorite fish dish of mine was a cakewalk. Unfortunately, once again, the dish was under seasoned with the requisite sweet tasting component totally missing?! Worse still, the fish was way over-cooked rendering the texture rough and tough! Missing the wonderfully executed ‘Stirred fry Shanghainese Rice Cake ‘ my wife recently had in Hong Kong. We ordered this similar dish in the hope it will satisfy her yearning. Well, I guess without my saying, most of you would have guessed the outcome?! Indeed, the execution was nothing close to Hong Kong’s standard. Shanghai River’s rendition was way below par, totally lacking in ‘wok-hay ‘ components. The taste profile, flat and savorless, the ingredients smothered in thick starchy gravy. The supposedly famous ‘ Water, pan fried pork buns ‘ were acceptable, with fairly light, bun cocoons and crispy bottom. However, the overall product could use a touch more wine seasoning for the pork filling and a more complex broth.

We were surprised to need a reservation for lunch but decided to wait based on the recommendation from the desk at Hilton. The hot & sour soup, Azechuan Smoked Duck, and Yangzhou Fried Rice was exceptionally good. I have traveled the world and never had better Asian food. I didn't care for the vegetable spring roll. Serving sizes are large... enough for two. Our waitress, Jennifer, was very pleasant and helpful. We were the only Americans dining, but the staff is bilingual. It was a great experience. The meal costs $90 plus a tip, which is more than we would normally spend on lunch, but i would definitely do it again.

I have been at this restaurant many times and the quality of food and service is consistently good. Ample parking and fairly spacious. My favourite dishes here are the Shanghai dumplings and Black Vinegar Spare Ribs

Had dinner with some colleagues on a business trip. Good flavours and fresh ingredients. Spicy but not too hot for the people with more delicate palates. Very good food. The service was prompt and efficient, and attentive without being overbearing. I'd go back and would also recommend this place.

My sister in-law lives near this restaurant and we have eaten there several times. We also lived in Shanghai for three years and so are no strangers to Shanghai cuisine. I have to preface my remarks by saying that my wife's family are all southerners, and Shanghai cuisine is not my favorite, but never mind all that, this is a good restaurant with good service. With ni cai (Shanghai cuisine), of course one will have some Xiao long bao--the dumplings with the "soup" inside, some Jian bao (dumplings that are crunchy on the bottom, soft on top), drunken chicken (chicken cooked in wine sauce), and other items, and these are all good here. Reminded me of being in Shanghai! (Which in this context, is good.) That having been said, however, I didn't hear anyone hear speaking Shanghai dialect, but never mind. I suppose there are other Shanghai eateries in Richmond and the Vancouver area, but I'm not aware of them. If anyone has some favorites for us to try out, please let me know on the Trip Advisor site (drop me a message). The prices here are also not high. Bon appetit!

This restaurant has excellent Chinese cuisine. The place was packed on a Monday night and lots of Richmond locals. I was able to make a reservation for six. We shared six dishes plus white rice and we left very satisfied and pleased. There are many choices in Richmond. You can’t go wrong with this one.

The food is average. Tong Pao pork is terrible. It just a pice of pork not even pork belly cooked in brown sauce. Not have any characters of Ton Pao pork. Pea leaves are not tender at all, Fried oysters are excellent. Shao Llng Bao is definitely worth every penny.
