I've been going to Matoi for years now...coming up on 8 years. I do not live close. Currently I am a 30 minute drive away without traffic and still make the trip. I am half Japanese and lived in the Tokyo area for 6 years and this is by far the best sushi I've had here. There are other decent places, don't get me wrong, but Matoi not only does sushi well (and authentically) but they also make a wide variety of Japanese food that tastes just as wonderful. I've brought visitors from Japan to the restaurant many times and they've thoroughly enjoyed the food. The staff are amazing, the food is excellent, it is almost always busy (which says something). It is really a hidden gem as most people go downtown for good food and that is just not necessary.

Very delicious sushi, miso soup was tasty and tempura was hot and crunchy. Sushi was very good, reasonable prices and great customer service! My only complaint would be, if you get a bowl of rice on the side, it seems to be day old rice. Other than that, I would definitely come back!

This is a restaurant where the chef is the owner, and does not serve soy sauce...not even when I asked. He told me to eat my rainbow roll without soy sauce first...and he would give it to me if I did not like it. He was right...you taste the roll...without the soy sauce...no disguises. The mushroom soup they serve is very good. Try it if you go to the restaurant

It was the worst sushi that ever eat not only that make me wait to long and the food was cold and the rice taste so hard it looks like was from the day before, I won't recommend this place unless if you like your food cold and hard rice , customer service the worst they won't see me again for sure .

Have been coming here for years and is a great sushi restaurant in the tri cities. They do serve fish from Japan. Owner used to work for Fuji restaurant in Burnaby. One thing that I wish they can do is have more varieties of fish from Japan. Sashimi is always fresh here.

I went to Matoi Sushi Coquitlam in November 2017, and I was very pleased with the service and food. This restaurant is one of the few actual authentic Japanese restaurants in the lower mainland. Would dine here again.

I ate here yesterday in a group of 8 and was unfortunately quite disappointed in my experience. Three of us in the group chose to eat dinner boxes while the other five ordered a selection of sushi and sashimi. We partially did this to ease bill payment so we could group into 3 and 5 (2 bills total). The service was fine...for the group of 5. They proceeded to receive 5 or 6 items, platters of sushi, sashimi, chicken kaarage, and so on - while the 3 of us sat with nothing. We waited for an hour without so much as a miso soup or salad. We asked a few times where our food was and the response was "it's coming." I guess our server finally had it with us since she started responding "we're really busy" and "there were a lot of orders put in, okay." I mean, we get it, it was a busy night and there were lots of people. But the rest of our party is receiving all their food (including cooked food) and everyone around us - including couples who had arrived after us - are receiving food. Part of my negative experience is the attitude of the server. I don't get why she didn't just apologize and move on - getting annoyed and defensive with us when we were simply asking politely why we didn't have any food doesn't help. It got so bad our compatriots actually started ordering another round before we got anything to eat. The food itself was okay. After such a wait it would have had to be phenomenal for me not to be irritated. My sashimi was good quality but the rest of the box was nothing special. What really took the cake was when the same server came back and made it very clear no less than 3 times that she was going to charge us the mandatory 15% gratuity for our group size. This is one of the very few times where I was pretty incensed because we received service like we weren't part of a large group, were given attitude, and then were forced to pay a much larger gratuity than we would have left under the circumstances. So we paid without complaint. But we're never going back there. There's no shortage of high quality sushi places in the area so there's no reason to ever set foot in Matoi again.

I ordered a dinner box to go...I was told it was a 15 minute wait, which is fine but then watched Asian people being served and me left to wait more than 45 minutes for one dinner box. I finally had my food and left for home. When I opened up the food...the avocado rolls were black and rotten. The food was mushed together and honestly had no appeal and looked like someone's left overs so I could not eat it. I was so disappointed and opened a can of soup instead. The next day I decided to call and tell them of my experience and my complaint. The person was rude and more worried about what her Manager would say and of course no one wanted to help me. So I made it clear that I wanted to now speak to the Manager personally and left my details to contact me please. The Manager called me so I told of my experience and that the food was rotten. She was clear to blame me for not calling her right away which is a point but I couldn't help her understand that the food was the problem here and the service but I did not mention service yet. She became rude when I said that the food was rotten and did not understand how to deal or even speak to a customer so I finally asked what are you going to do about it? She did not offer a refund but another chance to remake the same dinner box. I agreed and arranged that very night for the same dinner box. There was never any accountability or a polite or friendly manner but ok lets try again. This time as I entered the place the Manager looked me up and down with narrow eyes and was hostile...but I had my food.. but when I looked the rolls were not rotten but still the quality of food was horrible, mushed together, rushed even though they had all afternoon to prepare and the only difference was that the avocado rolls were now not black but everything else really bad...even worse was the way in which I was treated and therefore it was a big mistake to re-order as they took it badly and was so rude without a sorry. I will never eat there or recommend them and it's unfortunate because I work in the area and are always asked by my customers on where to eat? NEVER AGAIN SO IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR FOOD AND HOW YOU ARE TALKED TO OR TREATED THEN STAY AWAY. THEY CHOOSE TO SERVICE THEIR OWN AND IT'S CLEARLY DISGUISING TO TREAT PEOPLE AND ANYONE SO BADLY SO I HAVE TO WARN YOU TO GO ELSEWHERE

My family and I typically get take out from this restaurant once / week. They are very busy so I would recommend reservations if you want to get a seat - otherwise, try to arrive as close to opening time as possible! Service can be a bit slow, particularly if they are busy . . . but the food is worth the wait! They have a great menu and the lunch sets are great value.

We have been going to Matoi for years, and this is just THE best sushi restaurant we have ever gone to! We have tried others, but always go back to Matoi. We usually go every 2 weeks or so. Excellent, fresh food, extensive menu and 'fresh sheet' and best service you could ever have. The staff are wonderful and very attentive. We always receive complimentary appetizers. They are closed Mondays and get quite busy on weekends, so reservations are recommended, especially large groups. I love the grilled whole squid, assorted shashimi and my husband's favorite is the Deluxe Chirashi. A BIG THUMBS UP!

This is awsome delicious sushi restaurant in Coquitlam. You should try there. They are pretty busy especially weekends so you should reserve the table or room ahead of the time.

Great sushi restaurant with a extensive menu. We have been here a number of times and have yet to try any of the grilled fish or noodle dishes. Their sashimi, nigiri and rolls are so delicious I find it difficult to order anything else. The restaurant can get very crowded around peak times and there usually is a 5-10 minute wait. The restaurant seems under staffed and the service is a bit slow.

Visited Matoi on a Tuesday night. The place was hopping at 7 pm and it took the servers 5 minutes to even acknowledge our presence at the door. We noticed that there were 5 tables waiting to order and just 2 servers working the whole restaurant. The restaurant appeared short staffed. FYI, the portable air-conditioner at the door just wasn't cutting the heat. We were all over heated by the time we departed and felt poorly for the servers. Have heard great thing regarding this restaurant. Unfortunately we didn't experience it. We ordered 7 cups of tea and 1 arrived. Once our order was taken, the food arrived in dribs and drabs. We ordered several of the same dishes and they did not arrive at the same time. Some of the presentations were excellent! The fresh fish...maybe not the freshest. We experimented with all the dishes on the menu, the cooked tempura, yam fries and udon were fine. The meal was hit and miss. We wrapped up our meal and requested plates and our cake from the server. She was reluctant to bring them, the forks or a knife for our use. Apparently the restaurant has a no ""Private Cake" policy that we were not aware of. For the safety of their staff and for health reasons no cakes are permitted. This was very off putting and the staff did not state any policy when we arrived. I have never had this occur in a restaurant...EVER! We saw the sign upon our departure...it was too late by then. FYI, if you are not familiar with the restaurant, it's difficult to locate. It's actually across from the White Spot and near the Hon's in Westwood plaza.

I go to this restaurant regularly for lunch and they never disappoint. They have the standard fare plus a great variety of items on the daily/fresh sheet. I have never been to dinner there but at lunchtime on the rare occasion it can get quite busy. The food is kept straightforward without being gimmicky. And its Authentic.
