About
Spirit Ridge proudly sits on the traditional land of the Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation. Our inspiration for the name of the restaurant comes from chaptik stories of the first aboriginals to live in the Okanagan. The Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation approach to food is based on the creation stories of their culture. The Four Food Chiefs are central: Skimxist Black Bear (chief of animals, representing self-sacrifice, leadership, giving), Ntytikxw Chinook Salmon (water creatures, perseverance, hard work), Speetlum Bitterroot (plants below the round, relationships to the land) and Seeya Saskatoon Berry (plants above the ground, growth, strength, community) are legendary. The Four Food Chiefs; Black Bear, Chinook Salmon, Bitterroot, and Saskatoon Berry, represent the key elements of Indigenous cuisine. Chef Murray McDonald describes the menu as “modern vineyard cuisine inspired by our Indigenous roots.”

We came in on Sunday late morning, January 24, for a weekend brunch to celebrate my parents anniversary and my sister-in-law‘s birthday. The Indian male who was our host and server at times (whose name I was unable to get) provided such above and beyond service to us that we couldn’t stop praising him amongst ourselves while we were sitting at our table. He was beyond attentive, kind, and went the extra mile by providing us complimentary fruit and pastries to start as well as a complimentary chocolate platter for dessert. He was apologetic because the restaurant was so busy, however, he did not need to be because the service he provided made up for any wait that we had. I truly believe he needs to be recognized for his demeanour and positive attitude, finding people in the service industry like him is super hard!

What a great concept restaurant! Location is beautiful too. But the food: based on the Indigenous gods of the region. By far the best meal we had in the region. Pros: nice views, excellent food. Cons: our server was always rushed and seemed a little inexperienced. My parents had been there a few nights before and they’d been given the full background on the concept, the chef, the location, etc. Unfortunately, I think this is what was missing from our server: an account of what made the place so special.

We dined as a couple on a recent stay at the Spirit Ridge Resort. Advance reservations are recommended. Covid safety protocols are in place - distanced tables and servers wearing masks. The food and service were excellent, although I can't say I was especially moved by the "gimmick" of the menu classifications - personally I'd rather just have the dishes listed by size or by appetiser, main course and dessert. The food style is modern eclectic Canadian cooking, with plenty of local ingredients and I felt everything was well-sourced and treated carefully by the kitchen. The local wines are all fantastic and a good selection were available by the glass so we were able to enjoy different varieties. It was hot when we visited so we preferred to stay in the airconditioned interior, but during more temperate weather dining outside would be lovely. If you're there close to sunset, bring your sunglasses!

From the moment I approached the hostess at the entrance of the restaurant I felt unwelcomed. Since my boyfriend and I were not staying at the Spirit Ridge Resort I was not aware it was mandatory to bring a mask to the restaurant. The hostess seemed annoyed that I hadn't brought a mask, and with a sigh handed me one that the facility provided. (mind you I was standing behind the poly-glass barrier and being very respectful of the social distancing rules). I had called earlier in the day and asked if there was a less busy time to come for dinner, since we had not made a reservation. The very polite girl on the phone took my name down and suggested I come around 6 (seeing as this was the most likely time we would be able to get a table for walk-in). The hostess couldn't find my name in the computer system and she seemed frustrated that I was even attempting to dine at the restaurant in the first place. I was just about to say "forget it, we will just go somewhere else", because I felt so unwelcomed. Just then another hostess approached the desk and very politely offered us a table that was open (she was much more welcoming). The first hostess made sure we were aware that if we were going to stay and eat they would need the table back by 7 pm for another reservation. Seeing as it was only 5:30pm and an hour and half was more than enough time to eat comfortably, I said that it was totally fine and we would be done before then, no problem at all. I was just happy that we were able to get a table so last minute and called my boyfriend over, when AGAIN she rudely re-stated that it was really important for them to have the table by 7. At this point I felt like she was trying to convince us to leave. And honestly; we should have, because we were extremely disappointed from the moment we sat down. There were about 40 fly's circling our table and the surrounding tables throughout the entirety of our dinner (we had to swat them away from our food the whole time we were eating). The waitress was a tall older woman, (I believe her name started with a D), and she was amazing. She was the only reason we stayed and had dinner there because she was so warm, welcoming, and kind. The food was decent, my boyfriend had the Halibut and complained of it being "bland", and I had the Butternut Squash, which was surprisingly delicious. We tipped the waitress very well, but were left with a bitter taste in our mouths from the overall underwhelming experience. Long story short, if you want to feel unwelcomed, belittled, and unworthy of dining at a high end restaurant (with overpriced, mediocre tasting food) make sure to stop by!

Dear Guest I was disappointed to read the comments about the hostess and I'll be reviewing this with our restaurant leaders right away. Obviously our goal is not to have any customer feel that way about their experience at the restaurant. My sincerest apologies. In regards to the flies, unfortunately at this time of year during harvest when the fruit is falling off the trees to the ground, patio dining in general in the valley sees more flies everywhere despite our best efforts to do what we can on the patio. Kind regards, David

Unfortunately, I did not get chance to dine here , BUT the staff managed to ruin my (and my twin sister's) 45th birthday celebration. We are staying at the Spirit Ridge resort for 1 week. My sister (Maya) called the day of, at 8:30 am and asked for reservation at 6pm. The staff confirmed reservation. She asked if patio would be possible for birthday celebration, and staff member said that it depends on what's available when we arrive. Then we showed up at 6 pm to be told by hostes that the reservation was never called in and my sister's name does not exist on their list. Then after our insistence that she called, 5 minutes later, she told us that there is my sister's name on the list, but this was waiting list in case someone cancels. I told the hostes, that there is no way we would dress up and show up for our special celebration just for 'maybe you can get in'. She told us that there is nothing available and left it at that. Of course, we were furious and asked for manager, who unfortunately defended the practice by saying that they called my sister's phone to let her know that she is on the waiting list. My sister told us that she saw that she missed call at 11:30am from the Spirit Ridge Resort. There was NO MESSAGE left to advise her that the reservation was not valid. My sister tried calling back got the hotel reception, once she realized she got hotel reception she did't know what the call was about and hang up. Both my wife and I argued with manager and did not get anywhere and left quite angry and dissatisfied with poor handling of the matter. Only when my sister showed up 10 minutes later (we were gone already) the manager had reportedly a different tone and was trying to find a spot for us (after telling us twice that there is nothing they can do). It was too late, we were already gone. Unfortunately, our 45th twins birthday reunion was ruined as there was no restaurants that could accommodate us on such a short notice. We ended up with no dinner and I cannot believe that they could have treated us like that. There is no way you can get that what was supposed to be a very special moment back. Next time, I hope they bother to have better understanding what their capacity is before giving a reservation, then cancel and not leave a message so that you are informed. In addition, as a resort guest, and knowing that this was indeed no ordinary dinner for us.... you would think there could be compromise and not leave your guest without a dinner. And if a restaurant staff would like to use COVID as an excuse for this, please don't...come to my hospital to see how you can still deliver an excellent service despite COVID precautions!

Dear Sara I'm sorry to hear about the confusion with the reservation experience at the restaurant and the impact it had on such a special occasion. It is unfortunate that even with the confusion, our team did not have something available for you at the time nor had the opportunity to try to find something available later on. Our apologies. The menu is a work of art, the location is mystical but the kitchen and staff are abysmal. From the start the maître D is tripping over the staff and what looks like an over abundance of wait staff seem to be completely disorganized. You give your drinks order and two minutes later someone else pops up to take your drinks order. Same with your food order; order it then someone else pops up to take it all over again. A bit of a Monty Python experience. Where else can you get venison, bison, wild salmon, pacific halibut all on the same menu? It’s not that it’s not well prepared and top quality they all are. But just like the wait staff all this beautiful food comes out cold and obviously not coordinated. It’s an amateur show all the way. Such a disappointment.

Last week I dined at this restaurant for the third or fourth time as I stay often at this resort. For a high end Hyatt property, this restaurant is a huge disappointment and no wonder it ranks so low on this review site. My meal there last week was typical. While the food was okay, nothing memorable, the service was truly awful. I get it, times are tough during covid and all restaurants are struggling to find staff. But others in the area fare much better - Convivia, Campo, Masala Bistro, Burrowing Owl, Miradoro, all great meals with decent to good service. Its not just a lack of staff, or inexperienced staff, that is the problem. It's systemic. Our party of four ordered a bottle of wine. It arrived nearly 30 minutes later. The waitress apologized for the delay, saying the bartender was behind mixing drinks. Well, I bartended for many years, and would always get the bottled wines up right away. Or the waiter would be permitted to grab the bottle themselves. It's ridiculous to wait that long for a bottle of wine. It took just as long to get our appetizer, and again for our mains, and then again for the bill. Our dirty plates sat on our table forever, with no one bothering to check on us. You get the point. Avoid this restaurant until they get better management and staff.

Good Morning Mark I'm sorry to hear about how your dining experience went. There is certainly a lot for me to review in here as the entire experience sounds so uncharacteristic of the experience we normally offer at the restaurant. June was our server and she was timely and knew her food and wine. Manager came to check out everything and was a pro. Food was very very very well prepared; wild salmon for me, quail and cauliflower steak for the bride. All tasty with hints of surprise tastes. CUSTOMERS, get out of your tank tops, swim trunks, backwards ball caps and flip flops. Iron a shirt and enjoy a quality experience in Osoyoos.

Fabulous views and good service. We went for lunch and I had the quiche and salad, the salad was fresh and the dressing wonderfully light and tasty (just the right amount too) However the quiche filling was rather disappointing after have tried the light tasty pastry. The filling was only a couple of millimeters thick and very very rubbery. I could only eat a few small bites and subsequently left it. The restaurant did comp my meal, but I have to say I enjoyed the salad so much it didn’t mar my experience one bit.

It started form the time we entered and were greeted by the hosts with smiles and enthusiasm, followed by the amazing knowledge that our server had and explained the vision for the restaurant of the Executive Chef Murray McDonald. Then there was the food. Words cannot explain the presentation, flavour and overall dining experience. We had the Bannock and Spreads for an appetizer, the Pacific Halibut and the Bison Ribeye. The deserts of Auntie Hazel’s dragonfly and White Chocolate Lemon Meringue were a great way to end the meal. This is a must visit on any visit to the area and we will definitely be back.

Came here at the tail-end of the season. Seated on the covered section of the patio where they ensured plenty of heaters were set up. This restaurant is on the east side of the valley, so there are spectacular sunsets to watch. Our server was so personable (regret not remembering his name!) and made some delicious cocktails. Portions were larger than expected so we left stuffed. Also, the campfire dessert was fantastic - usually a write off at hotel restaurants but this was a lovely exception! We will definitely add this to our rotation of restaurants when we’re in Osoyoos!

The food was amazing. The four people in our group all had different entrees and each one was delicious. It was one of those meals I'll be thinking about for a while. Service was slow but to be honest, I LIKED that. It gave us a relaxed meal with more time to enjoy the ambiance and stunning view over the vineyard and lake. I would imagine the service is only slow due to covid. Staff were pleasant and helpful, I think there just weren't enough of them. If you are a fussy eater, you might want to skip this one. A lot of unusual offerings of game meat etc. But you can check the menu online before you go. Overall a beautiful restaurant with amazing food.

Every review is so positive. I don't get it. This restaurant is bargaining on its culturally sensitive menu to drive folks in. In reality, its just a really expensive so-so restaurant with a decor blander than bocconcini. And the view? Well, it only gets a weak Yea because EVERY place in Osoyoos has a great view! We booked a reservation for the patio but they couldn't guarantee that we would get a table when we got there (huh?). The waitress, though very sweet, placed her entire platter of dirty plates on our table to rearrange them so she could carry it back without dropping, an unacceptable practice in restaurant parlance. We asked for the overhead heater to be turned on 3 times. This did not happen until we were pulling out our seats to leave. The food? 50/50. The starter Charcuterie had way too much fruit and not enough of anything else. The Pacific Halibut- at $42 a plate- was dry and lacked any discernable taste as there was so little sauce on it. In defense, the starter bannock ($26) and the Ribs ($38) get a plus. We highly anticipated our outing to this restaurant to have not just great food but an atmosphere and elegance to match. In truth, we left disappointed and, quite honestly, will not be returning.

I have mixd feelings about my experience at The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry today. The location is spectacular and the restaurant is very nice! I was with a large group of ladies and our waiter was able to serve everybody without any issues. My issue was that I had a long blonde hair in my salad/salmon meal. I quietly told our server about the hair and he very quickly whisked the hair away without so much as an apology or any mention of whether I might want another salad. It was at the beginning of my meal so I had not eaten much of the salad. When the bill came, I expected some compensation for the hair being in my meal, especially since the salad had not been replaced with a fresh salad, but there was nothing on the bill to reflect that. I had to mention it to the server and he went and asked his manager what he should do. The cost of the glass of rose was removed from my bill. I wasn't sure what the actual protocol was when a hair is in a restaurant meal, so I looked it up on the internet to confirm what the right thing to do was. First of all, and at the very least, the waiter should have apologized, and then a new salad should have been offered. I hadn't even cut into the salmon so I would have been happy to have just my salad replaced. So my experience at your restaurant would have been a lot better if the hair situation had been handled better.

Hello Jillian I completely agree the situation should have handled better if that was how it was handled. While very rare, sometimes a dish can come out less than perfect and our team certainly goes through training on what to do when that should occur. I'm surprised it went so off course. I'm wondering if you would be willing to reach out to me directly so I can get some more information on your experience? Kind regards, David

My partner and I along with another couple received amazing service this past weekend. I cannot recall our servers name but he was also a bartender and made us phenomenal drinks and was attentive to serve our courses and retrieve plates quickly despite it being a fully reserved evening. He was also busy making drinks for the restaurant! But we did not have to wait long for anything. He took the time to explain the name of the restaurant which I appreciated to learn about the Indigenous culture. I highly recommend booking a reservation. The food was exceptional, I have no complaints. Everything was fresh and you can tell the effort put into making each dish. The only negative thing I can say is that I was so full, but that is on me. At the end we requested our dessert to go as a treat for later one and that was no issue. Love this place a lot.
