I've heard many good things about Caldense Bakery in Whitby so I had to drop in and try for myself. They specialize in a wide selection of fresh breads and pastries, while offering light meals.
I had their Bifana sandwich, a Portuguese style grilled pork with caramelized onions on a fresh bun. It was a rustic sandwich with good flavour. My friend had the Chicken Caesar Wrap and that looked and tasted good.
Of course, we couldn't be in a pastry shop without trying their delicious looking pastries. A pineapple topped bun caught my eye with its bright yellow colour. It was delicious and I ate the whole thing! My companion had a selection of pastries, mostly chosen by her young daughter. They were good, too!
Tina's Portuguese Cuisine shares the space with them, offering more substantial meals. They specialize in Portuguese chicken and other favourites, with catering available. My friend tried their Shepherd's Pie. It was a generous serving that resulted in leftovers.
While I usually prefer a more substantial meal for lunch, this food was good. I'll definitely come back for their fresh breads and pastries!

We use to come here after church every Sunday for breakfast/lunch but when Covid came and church services were cancelled we also stopped visiting as we live a little out of the way and we assume the restaurant section was closed but when we found out they reopened we hurried back and was very pleased as always with our meals. As usual the our food was fresh and delicious. Love the new breakfast that includes breakfast potatoes at a reasonable price There deserts are to die for. The Portuguese tarts and cannolis are yummy, as is all the desserts we have tried in the past. Their western sandwich is yummy with grilled veggies. Never have had any trouble with service either. If you are friendly and considerate you will get the same back from staff. Generally a busy spot and with fewer tables because of Covid regulations so I suggest you go on off hours and not prime breakfast and lunch hours to get seating. Restaurant is always clean.

A lot of people come here for the tarts. I find them boring to the palette. I love the sandwiches, the crusty bread especially. However, if you ask them to change a few things like instead of bread, fries, they are very resistant to this change and do not compromise to suit your needs. The desert looks yummy but once you bite into them, leave you disappointed. My suggestion....focus on a few desert and make them amazing. Reduce e the variety. And compromise a little. Also, no coffee top-ups. Go visit the cafe next door. F.ART . They are something else! :)

We ordered my sister a cake for her birthday, and on the day of pick up, they called and said that one of their staff members ruined my sister's cake. My sister loves to get sliced cake from the bakery it was the only thing she asked for.
My mom went in to see how bad the cake was. The top was squished but my sister really wanted the cake and said she would take it as is as long as she didn't have to pay for their mistake. the owner said no.
Normally when mishaps like this happen, I always deal with them because my mom doesn't like confrontation. When I got home, I called the store and told them what I was calling about and I was immediately met with attitude.
No Accountability.
The girl on the phone just kept saying "we are humans, and we make mistakes".
I told her that we should have to pay for their mistake and at the very least they should have replaced the cake free of charge. She told me she would speak to the Manager, and that I should call back in 20min.
I called back and you could hear in his tone that he didn't care that they messed up and didn't feel like they should have to take responsibility for this situation. He told us he would not replace the cake that they destroyed.
They are both rude and don't have any customer service skills.
Will never be buying from this place again.
Shop local. I have learned a valuable lesson.

When I pass by here on a weekend, I have to stop for some Portuguese tarts. Sooo good, but eat them as soon as you can. I have never eaten any better. The next item, the buns. All of them are good. but my fave is the Portuguese buns. Just some butter needed. I will be back over and over agin.

Now that covid is lifting, its time to get out and enjoy. This bakery is fantastic and I had purchased thing here I have not gotten before. The Italian Canolli was incredible and so was the Portugese one. Of course their tarts are the best. So many goodies to choose from. Good to get a coffee and crusty bread also. I dont think you can go wrong here.

Bakery is amazing!! OWNER IS A IGNORANT JERK 🙄 Lids don't fit properly. Spelled coffe on me and burn my hand !!! OWNER shoud fix that problem!!and not put blame on customers how to handle the cup .He should be more customers friendly.

Family from Amsterdam driving from 1000 Islands to Niagara and looking for some real food beyond the usual junk. Taking a turn off the freeway into Whitby we spotted the Caldenese Bakery (same road as Farmer’s Mkt). Wow - amazing sandwiches (chicken parmigano with sauce),fresh, healthy salads & natural tasting, indulgent desserts like dulce du leche cheesecake & a host of other tarts, cakes and breads we’d not seen since leaving Europe. So much better than the standard stuff. Owner was super friendly, offered a spontaneous cheese tasting & good conversation.
Highly recommended!!

Not worth the effort. They should try harder to train their staff and educate them on customer service. There are LOTS of better bakeries in Whitby.

I went for lunch with a friend. The menu had a good variety to choose from. We both ordered sandwiches mine arrived first and we had to wait several minutes for my friends sandwich to arrive. The sandwiches were very skimpy. I order a ham and cheese and the sandwich only had 1 very thin slice of ham. I felt like I ordered a cheese sandwich. My friend had the BLT which was mostly bread and lettuce. It was a disappointing meal.

I/We have stopped here often for coffee and a dessert. Their desserts (and we've tried many of them) are all delicious and a large variety. Recently we dropped in for lunch. We tried two of their sandwiches - chicken parmesan and ham and cheese - both terrible. I have never had chicken parmesan, either in a sandwich or as a meal that was so tough you couldn't bite through it or cut it with the kitchen knife they provided and the sauce - how can you make a sauce that is so dry (it's a sauce). The ham and cheese was better, but we still only ate half, because of the taste. Definitely drop in for their desserts, but skip the rest of the menu.

First trip here for us and found the cafe to be ver clean and well organized.
Limited servers/help but enough for a non busy time.
Pastries were VERY GOOD and limited buns and bread. Good cafe food menu for anyone wanting a quick stop.
We will be back.
