Ok place for breakfast.
A bit pricy and smaller portions.
I had a French toast sandwich with fruit in the middle(banana strawberry). Was disappointed . Not the great taste I was expecting. However I would give something else another try. Plates are nicely decorated. But again, my plate was pretty small portions for the price and for the tiny slices of bread they took to make the French toast. I am use to Cora that as much better size of plates and lots of fruit.

Good central location. I had the vegetarian Bennie with spinach and it was delicious. The fresh fruit I asked for instead of hash browns was truly “fresh” and not some goopy mess I’m used to. The presentation was beautiful and the coffee was great and strong. Service was excellent. Cheerful staff makes a big difference. I’d love to come back next time I’m in town.

Whenever I come home from ON to visit family, I always make a point of heading here for breakfast!
The worst part of visiting this restaurant is trying to decide what I’m going to have. There is a ton of choice on the menu and it’s super creative. You can’t go wrong with absolutely anything on the menu. There’s lots of variety to choose from.
I almost always opt for one of the Eggs Benedict and this time around, the Taco Benedict did not disappoint. My sister-in-law always gets the Eggs Benedict with roasted yam and loves it. You can taste the love in every bite of their food.
Service was fabulous as always, with lots of coffee on offer. Food was served quickly and was so tasty.
Can’t wait to get back again. ❤️

I asked my dad to go for breakfast since we had some time before our flight home on our last day in Courtenay. A neighbour back home had recommended The Hen and the Hog Cafe, and at a glance online it seemed to have good reviews. We ordered the waffle and quinoa bowl to eat. The table next to us received their food about 5-10 minutes after we sat down. They ate their food and paid, as we waited for our food to arrive. 3 tables had been seated after us (2 single people and a couple), and they all received their food and were eating as we waited.
My Dad inquired to the wait and the reply was, “There are 2 sides to the kitchen, a hot side and a cold side.” He noted that several tables came after us and were already eating. The same sentence was repeated to us. We were told our food was coming.
Sympathizing with the customer goes a long way. Acknowledging our wait (30+ minutes) and that seeing other food come out for people who came into the cafe after us, would have put us at ease. Explaining the structure of the kitchen set up does not. Taking our orange juice and tea off the bill would have made us feel welcome there and we would have left on a positive note. Checking in after a few bites would have turned the situation around. Once we received our food no one came to us until my Dads plate needed to be removed. We unfortunately had absolutely no service which is super unfortunate and a sad way to experience breakfast while on vacation.
The Benny’s looked great. If you love eggs benedict you may enjoy this place. However between the poor service, the location only a few feet off the highway (we could hardly talk as the trucks rumbled by), and the ill-proportioned amount of quinoa I received (I’m not sure who eats that much quinoa in one sitting. I would have cooked that much quinoa for several dinners in a week) we don’t recommend you eat breakfast there

Small cafe, not fancy. I had waffles, whipped cream, syrup and a good selection of fresh fruit. My partner had scrambled egg (which looked more like an omelete), thick cut bacon and potatoes which hadn't been fried enough and looked 'grey'. The service was slow - two servers - one of which was busy with customers on the outside patio which was detached from the cafe and a few steps away. I suspect we should've chosen bennies which seems to be their specialty.

A must stop for breakfast when in Courtenay. Be prepared to wait for your table, especially during weekends. Don't look for attentive servers as they are too busy with many hangry customers who flock to this place for one thing only, great food!

Today by special request we took my son to this place for his birthday breakfast. We did have a wait but that is because it’s so good and a large group was there before us. When it was time to pay we were asked what we were up to for the day and when I replied it was my sons birthday, the server took our bill and came back with his taken off!!! Well played Hen and Hog! You made a boy feel very special on his big day!!! 🥰

In Courtenay for just one night and wasn’t sure where to have breakfast. After seeing the pictures of Hen & Hog on Trip Advisor we decided to give it a try. So happy it was a weekday morning and there was a table available. We both decided on the traditional eggs benny. Generous amount of shaved ham, perfectly poached eggs, and homemade hollandaise sauce, lots of pan fried small potatoes. Absolutely delicious. Also oversized mugs of coffee. Excellent customer service and reasonably priced. Can’t wait to come back and try something else on the menu.

I came here as a friend had recommended it. Arrived at 10am and got seated at 10.30. I think we could have been seated and served quicker but the staff didn’t seem to be rushing or working very efficiently. They were friendly, though, and the food was very good, although the hash browns were not crispy and moreso just boiled potatoes. I had the veggie omelette and my boyfriend had the feast. Would come back if there was less of a wait but not sure the food is worth 30min+ wait.

The Hen and Hog cafe specializes in Egg Bennies and they have lots of variety.
Not being a huge Bennie fan (hollandaise - yuck), I did a regular eggs and sausage breakfast. It comes with deep fried potato cubes as the hash browns (which I'm less partial about as well).
Couple of things I liked were the attentive service staff and that they had blueberry jam for the toast. That is rare and I'm not sure why. As well, it's not a large service area so it gets pretty cozy in there if it's busy, which it seemed to be when I was there.
I will go again and perhaps try one of the bennies. Maybe they need to make a loggers breakfast!
And lastly, it's a $20 -$25 breakfast which can be a bit on the costly side. Maybe that's a sign of the times?

This place is worth the wait. My husband and I came here while visiting Courtenay. We arrived around 1100 on a Thursday and we waited about 25-30 mins for our table. Once seated, we were greeted promptly and our order was taken. The food came out in a reasonable time, considering it was a full house. We each ordered the regular breakfast- and everything was cooked nicely and tasted delicious. We will definitely be back soon!

Seriously, the best omelette in the valley! - a 3-egger and build your own with 4 ingredients that you can choose from a list. Big variety of bennies, all excellent. Prices are reasonable and service is first-class, always with a smile :)
Do I like this place??? LOVE IT!

We had breakfast at The Hen and Hog Cafe all three days that we stayed in Courtenay in October 2021. We absolutely loved everything we tried - including two different versions of eggs benedict, huevos rancheros, crepes Florentine, and the Nutella banana strawberry crepes. Although it's not a fancy restaurant, the food was delicious, the servings were generous, and the service was wonderful. We will definitely be back next time we're in Courtenay!

We’ve heard great things about this restaurant, so we thought we would give it a try. We were seated all the way to the back, where many tables were crammed in together. Because of the poor acoustics, and two “loud” tables, we couldn’t hear each other. Ladies, the four of you were very loud, and so were the guys that were beside you.
The only way we could talk to each other, was to talk loud as well. Well, with all the people talking, it just became too difficult to hear, as my husband has hearing aids and he couldn’t make out what I was saying. Even though I have good hearing, the noise made hearing difficult for me as well. We asked to move to a quieter spot, and the staff accommodated us, however, our server was not happy having to move us. At least we got that impression. We tried to explain to her why we needed to move, but she ignored our explanation, and didn’t even look at us. She’s young, so I suppose that explains her not understanding. We did notice that as people came in, they were all seated to the back and then worked forward to fill the small space. Our new table spot was a bit better for hearing each other, but the entire restaurant was still so noisy, we would be hesitant to come back. The food was absolutely delicious, too. We wonder if the management knows how people are seated in there? We would think that seating people with a table or two apart might help? Just a suggestion for next time.

It took 45 minutes to receive our order. I had eggs Benedict and the english muffin couldn’t have been toasted as it was soggy and hollandaise sauce had no taste. Decaf coffee so strong you couldn’t drink it.
