We had dinner at Wild Mountain Restaurant on Sunday, Nov. 6. With us was my son and granddaughter, who we had not met for years in person. So, we were ready for a special evening. And since we had been fans of Wild Mountain Restaurant...for many years – since the time of Markus, the predecessor of current Chef Oliver – we chose Wild Mountain Restaurant. But the experience did not live up to our expectations. For one thing, the menu did not include items we had loved and hoped for from our previous visits – the last some years ago – such as lamb dishes or a dream of a sabayon desert. I had seared ling cod with kohlrabi. The ling cod was perfect, but the kohlrabi a little underwhelming. And the portions were so tiny that I would have finished hungry, had it not been for my son, who shared a slice of his generous woodfire-baked pizza, which was good. My wife and granddaughter each had a pasta dish, but it was not impressive enough for them to recall any detail. Including two beers and two glasses of wine, and a decent tip for the excellent servers, the bill came to $330. Bottom line: not good value for the money, and unfortunately not the feast we had been ready for. ☹More

Do you enjoy waiting almost an hour for food, nearly not getting your appetizer and then getting yelled at to leave a 20% tip? If so, then this is the place for you. Here are my comments on this restaurant: - the food is on...the pricey side with the selling feature that it that serves local organic food. But it isn’t always as tasty as one would expect and not as good as comparable restaurants. - when we attended on October 9, our time from arrival to departure was filled with errors and frustration. The waiter forgot our friend’s bread appetizer, forgot my request for ice for my beverage, and forgot we had asked a question about a dessert item. When I asked about a cod dish and indicated I would pick another item since I don’t like fish in a broth, the waiter said in a condescending tone “Oh you don’t eat broth.” - when our dinner finally ended, our table received two bills and both had errors: items billed that had not been ordered. Then we realized we had been charged a mandatory 20% tip. When we questioned it, we were told we should have seen a sign outside and wording on the restaurant website outlining the policy. The manager yelled loudly at us, telling us we should respect the policy and we should not come back. She walked away when we tried to discuss it further. Later when I looked at the website, the policy (at the bottom of an FAQ page) says tables of more than 5 must pay the 20% tip - but our table did not have more than 5, it had exactly 5 people. The mandatory tip and erroneous items were removed from the two bills. But it didn’t resolve our embarrassment and frustration after the loud lecture that attracted the attention of other tables. We definitely won’t return or recommend this restaurant. Go somewhere else to get friendly service and value for your money.More

We got there at 6 for our reservation of 5 people and we waited for about 30 minutes to order some drinks and some time after that we placed our order including sour dough bread as an appetizer. We told our waiter that one bill...would be for the party of 2 and the 2nd bill would be for our 3 friends. We waited and waited and finally they also ordered the bread and then we waited again. Our waiter admitted that he forgot our bread order and said they would get both bread orders in right away and they arrived a short while later together with the main meals. Our friends had 2 pizzas and bread at the same time, and nobody complained about it. For desert I had ice cream with espresso and I though the tiny scoop of ice cream was drowned in the espresso but again I did not say anything. When the bills arrived, both my bill and my friends bill had an item which we did not order, so our waiter agreed to remove it, which he did. When the new bill arrived, I noticed that it had 20% gratuity automatically added so I asked why it was there and I was told by our waiter that it was added for 5 people or more and that it is on the website. I was not satisfied with that and I did not see it anywhere on the website when I made the reservation. He offered to call the owner and she became very unfriendly and started lecturing us how we don’t respect the policy and that we don’t have to come back if we don’t like it. She actually raised her voice at us and I am sure the other people there heard all this. She then walked away saying that she is not going to debate it and was very unfriendly in the way she talked to us and to me it seemed that she was virtually yelling at us. Our waiter was standing there not knowing what to do so I told him I am not going to pay this 20% and than he finally offered to remove it and brought us another bill. I also mentioned to him I was unhappy with the service as I outlined above. I did pay 10% tip, although I did not feel like it. So we went home in a state of shock and I was very sad knowing I won’t come back after so many years of being a happy customer and after sending them all the business I could. The wording on their website of “automatic gratuity of 20% for parties over 5” means 6 people or more, but we were only 5 people. So after all the lecturing of not respecting the policy, the owner was the one not respecting the policy. I have never been treated so badly in any restaurant in my life and its so sad because I have always felt that Wild Mountain has always been my favourite restaurant on the island.More

Our dinner was excellent. The simple green salad was surprising- crisp, fresh and well dressed. The carpaccio had an unusual preparation emphasizing berry and citrus flavors, very good. The charcuterie plate offered a selection of restaurant smoked meats, which were also enjoyable. The service was...attentive and pleasant.More

We were staying at a near by Airbnb and my husband wondered up a time or two to check out the pizza oven. He was quite impressed and intrigued. He put us on the waiting list for dinner. When we arrived the owner/manager came storming...out yelling at us. She said something about getting a fine because my husband had a drink in hand (it was juice, but no one asked!) She basically told us to get out. I don't care if the food is 5 star, never have I ever been treated so rude and disrespectful! We ate boxed pizza at our place and it was great!More

We were on the wait list for dinner. 4 older adults. We were waiting at the entrance as they told us we were up next. The owner or manager came out on the patio and basically yelled at us because my brother had a drink...in his hand (it wasn’t even an alcoholic drink, but she didn’t bother to ask that). She basically chased us away while yelling at us. It was very embarrassing, and she did not have to treat 4 seniors that way. I don’t care how good the food might be, I wouldn’t eat there. No one needs to settle for that kind of treatment.More

Fantastic food that is all locally sourced. Brooke is a wonderful person who really wants her guests to have a good experience. The menu rotates based on the season, I strongly suggest trying the chicken if ever available, it is the best tasting I’ve ever...had. Simply amazing food and service.More

We were greeted outside by the hostess and explained that we had made a reservation but were a bit early. She very abruptly told us to put our masks on (which we gladly did) and then walked away to help someone else. When she returned...and checked the reservation she seemed upset that there were only three of us and not four, (the fourth person canceled last minute) expressing that the table reserved was design for four people. She then made us wait in the rain for 10 minutes past our reservation time while they waited for guests at a smaller table to finish up, even though the table we had reserved was free. When the smaller table was free we were brought inside and then three people that the hostess appeared to know (neighbours) were given our reserved table. We were right by the front door which was propped open so it was very cold resulting in my eight year old niece shivering. I closed the door and then the hostess reopened it. I asked the waitress later if we could keep it closed but she said no - that they needed it open for ventilation. This was understandable but what wasn’t was that they didn’t offer any remedy to the coldness. Overall the food was good but the font of house staff made us feel very unwelcome which put a damper on what was supposed to be a birthday celebration for my sister. I won’t be returning or recommending to my local Sooke or Victoria friends.More

We were alerted to Wild Mountain while in Victoria(enjoying a delicious meal at Agrius). We were able to snag a table the night before WM closed for the week and were very glad we could enjoy the farm to table menu. The Crispy Polenta appetizer...was insanely good, as was the rest of our meal. Very friendly and professional service as well.More

The veggies here were pure magic. The food quality is top notch. Staff are friendly and the place has a very nice atmosphere. We tried the spot prawns & crudités, the charcuterie, the heirloom tomato salad and the kids shared the pasta. The charcuterie was...very good but the balance of meat to cheese could be adjusted, board was very meat heavy. Overall a lovely experience, we would go back.More

Very poor service that bordered - no was rude in front of the whole seating. Meal came at same time as appetizer and was not appoligized for until main course was mostly finished. Wine for a 5 Oz glass was poor and closer to 3...ounce. Food was good for what it was but head server has an attitude. She is the reason that we will not return and will spread the message far and wide. We are local and expected better from them.More

I have never written a review like this largely because I have never had such a bad experience with a restaurant. Wait staff was astonishingly rude. If you value a positive customer service experience, take your business elsewhere.

Excellent all around! We went to Wild Mountain for the first time last night. We’re advised of a 40 minute wait but we’re called 5 minutes later and we were ushered into the dining room. Dining Room very tastefully decorated with fantastic views of Sooke...Basin. We all ordered the burgers with cheese. The burgers were incredibly fresh and full of flavour. Lettuce, green tomatoes and cheddar on Brioche buns. Served with awesome Polenta fries that just melted in your mouth. Dessert was Chocolate Ice Cream with Espresso for two, my gf had Peruvian Chocolate and I had Tayberry Sorbet. Two of us had SOB Leechtown Lager and the other two had SOB Renfrew Red. Great little restaurant with very friendly staff. Outside they had a large patio with lots of seating. They have a pizza oven now where you can order pizzas. Just a great restaurant and we will definitely be back.More

Can’t rate the food just the service. We were told that no one was ‘comfortable’ serving me or my family of 4. Fully vaccinated, negative tests from the States from 2 days ago. All of us wearing masks though no one else there was masked...including the staff that didn’t feel comfortable. For what it is worth, not the experience I was expecting from a small town in Canada. I’ve never been denied service anywhere including rural towns in the Deep South. No proof that race played any role, but there were no other people of color in the restaurant either and I was told I couldn’t eat there.More
