sushi was phenomenal, very fresh and perfectly put together. they were knowledge about Gluten Free options and gave good recommendations about the menu overall. only complaint was that they put all of our rolls onto one platter so everyone has to eat off the same plate. I would suggest that you could request separate plates.

I judge sushi-ya by their chirashi don. It can be a relatively simple dish, but that means there's no hiding the quality of your sashimi or rice. The chirashi at Yamagoya is very good, even exceptional. The sashimi on top is nicely varied, abundant and beautifully presented. The rice has always been perfect, never sticky, watery or hard, with modest vinegar and sugar. The other sushi and sashimi offerings at Yamagoya are just as good (although I eat the chirashi most visits) I've been lucky to eat a number of sushi restaurants in various places and Yamagoya definitely holds its own among my favourites.

Our first visit to fernie to go fishing. A long day’s drive to get here and a remarkable Japanese restaurant next door made an easy decision for dinner. All the typical Japanese menu items but served with a little flair made it a special evening. We shall return to fernie later this year.

We thought prices were high compared to our favorite sushi restaurants but we expect that in a tourist destination. I was extremely surprised to be asked for a gratuity when I picked up our food. I told her to add another $10 for them - I would have done so anyways but I think it's rude to ask for it. After paying and leaving I discovered a pickup fee of $6.35. Holy smokes - I have to pay for the privilege of NOT using the restaurant facilities! Ok, so time to enjoy the $150 birthday dinner for 4 adults and two children. Or not... I can't believe they would put shredded white onion in a spicy tuna roll. And again in the Kazan roll, the lobster roll and the Fernie roll! The onion overpowered every other flavor. The $21.75 Dragon roll was thankfully unsullied but nothing to write home about. ALL of the rolls had so little actual seafood in them that we could barely taste it. The miso soup was good and the Ramen was ok, though a little boring said Stacey. I love sushi and have had many excellent meals and a few that were mediocre. But we won't be back here again!

Stopped here based on TA reviews. It currently has take out & dine in options during Covid & people were lined up to get in by 4:45 pm. Staff was good but the sushi overall was average at best. Undercooked yam tempura and the sashimi on the dragon roll tasted a bit old/fishy.

We had a table for 8 and 2 people came 45 minutes late. The 6 of us had plenty of drinks and appetizers, yet the waitress kept asking when the other 2 would arrive, even saying that they don't usually hold seats for people. As we continued to order, and asked questions about food and drinks, we got brief curt responses. Throughout the meal, we were made to feel as though we were inconveniencing the server for being there. The food was good, but all of us had eaten better sushi in various places where we lived: Vancouver, Toronto, Ajax, Whitby, and Hamilton. My wife and I were disappointed with the sushi carpaccio because it was drenched in oil. Carpaccio is supposed to feature the delicacy of the fish or meat; the tuna and fish were so drenched that we could barely taste them. We enjoyed the flavourful sushi and had a good time overall, but a group should be made to feel welcome.

This place is absolutely overrated. We went there because of the high ratings. It's so disappointed that the food wasn't done properly or in Japanese way. Tempura was really big, good to fill up one's stomach, but not authentic. The broccoli and yam was huge that the broccoli was boiled before it was deep fried. Taste terrible. Shrimp was full of baking soda flavour. Batter wasn't cruncy but soggy. The sushi rolls were all good size to fill up the stomach but the rice was really tough. Not sure what went wrong. Suspect it wasn't sushi rice, and vinegar and sugar wasn't added. Fish was okay. Soft Shell Crab Karaage was overly deep fried. The sauce was overly sour. Beef Tataki was ok, but not in thin slices. Gyoza was ok. Customer service was good but it doesn't offset the food quality.

Picture a small cozy casual eatery akin to a bar with a varied Japanese menu for all tastes. Also like Fernie there is a wonderful youthful ski town vibe. We recommend it heartily.

Sushi are just great, large selection, obviously fresh made on demand, there are 2 private rooms, patio and a sushi bar. Staff is courteous, spoke with a guy from Aylmer Qc. He prepared us ‘deep fried beef sushi’ OMG! Will go back, Reserve !

We were seated right away, which was great. I was surprised we didn’t get a pepper to order like most sushi restaurant. The food was delicious and the menu quite elaborate. Service was acceptable but definitely not personable or interested. We were presented the bill as soon as we finished so the kids didn’t even get to order the sesame ice cream we had heard about.

Only average. Please add more fish to your rolls. They all toast the same. Simple as that. Each roll needs to be unique and stand out based on its ingredients. The lack of competition is why you are #1 in Fernie. Therefore - I suggest a meal of a variety of foods, and not an assortment of rolls.

Have heard wonderful things about this restaurant, so my wife and I finally went to try it out. She is gluten free and not a sushi fan, so we were extremely disappointed that there were only a couple of options for her. Since she had agedashi tofu a few nights earlier, she wanted to try something else but the karaage and tempura are not gluten free so she ultimately did not order anything other than edamame. I ordered a mix of nigiri and was surprisingly disappointed. The tuna was adequate but the yellow fin tuna was slightly fishy. I was most excited about the sockeye salmon, since I had some of the best salmon sushi at a competitor across town, but the sockeye salmon wasn't good. The pieces of fish were far too big, the cut caused it to be hard to eat, and the flavor wasn't great. I ended up not even finishing it all which, if you knew me, is a shock when it comes to sushi. Other than the service -- which was good, I'm not sure why this place gets the great ratings it does because we were unimpressed with our food and won't be going back.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. Shame they don’t take reservations, but the food makes up for the wait. Definitely recommend the Futomaki roll, dragon roll, and the toasted black sesame ice cream is like nothing I’ve ever had before, bussin.

Tempura arrived quickly, hot, crispy, excellent. 6 oz wine=$12 Pinot was good, did not like Merlot as much. Tall Timbers beer hit the spit after a day on the River. Crowded at 5:40 and they only opened at 5! Sushi, Fernie roll and Tiger roll took awhile. We were glad drinks and tempura came fast. Prices good. Server Kiana attentive, informative and accurate.

Food was amazing. We ordered as a group so we sampled a good portion of the entire menu. Everything was very fresh and tasty. Couldn’t be happier. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable of ingredients. Price was very reasonable. Big city quality with small town price and atmosphere.
