Many agree. Heartwood Kitchen is a good place to get breakfast, & what better than to get its popular, named after it, Heartwood Breakfast? I always do when I go to this breakfast, brunch & lunch spot, which is centrally located on the main commercial road of Peninsula in a charming eye-catching egg- yolk yellow historical building. The Heartwood Breakfast is the one reminiscent of the English breakfast — eggs, bacon & or pork sausages & toast, often with fried tomato, & maybe mushrooms & baked beans. At Heartwood there is no fried tomato, mushrooms or baked beans but what is included are delicious smash potatoes, as well as a touch of greens & some fruit. It costs 19$ & its in-house made hot sauce & jam is offered along with it, if one is partial to either. Heartwood also sells its hot sauce to go. It has a fairly extensive menu & many come here for its range of eggs Benny offerings, or its well-liked fried chicken dish. It is open from 8:30 am to 1 pm daily. It also offers catering, some pop up meal nights —- for example of dim sum — or its annual Jan 1 Chinese food sold by weight from 2 pm to 6pm on New Year’s Day. This culinary event, which offers food when most places are closed that day, draws queues, with some of its dishes selling out. In the summer months — when the ocean village of Ucluelet of circa 2,000 residents swells significantly with visitors — there is frequently a line up to get in for the morning meals too. It is a fairly small place with limited seating, something which increases significant in the warmer months, when its outdoor seating can be accessed. It also serves beer & wine, as well as a range of non-alcoholic drinks. Some days when I go in closer to lunch time, for a late brekkie, I pair my Heartwood breakfast with a IPA. A nice pairing indeed. Service is excellent & Chef co-owner, Ian Riddick & the kitchen team are attentive to the dishes which go out to its patrons. Posted by S Fuller.

Heartwood Kitchen, located in a charming egg-yellow historical building on Ucluelet’s main route — on which many eateries & other commercial shops are located — catches the eye, the culinary imagination & the taste buds. It is open daily, mostly for breakfast through to lunch, ending at 1pm, but it also comes up with other food feasts at other times of the day. In the festive months from late November through to New Year’s Day it offered a pop up dim sum event from 5 to 9 pm on Nov 29, selling 6 of the tasty morsels for 12$. Ucluelet has a night, called Magic Madness, which is held annual in the ocean village, affectionately known as Ukee by locals, where shops & eateries discount their offerings in advance of December festive shopping. Heartwood’s dim sum offering was part of that night’s events. Its non-identical ocean village twin, Tofino, 26 miles north, has a similar annual shopping night a week later. Heartwood has a number of other special food events, coming up, which include Turkey pick ups on December 22 & 23 for those who don’t want to do all of the festive cooking at home, then closing from the 24th, opening again on the 27th. We, as a family, have ordered the turkey dinners in the past. Heartwood will again holds its annual Chinese Food sold by weight event on January 1 from 2 to 6pm. It is popular, so best to get there early, as it can sell out. Also offered is an in-house made hot sauce @ 20$ for 1 litre, which can make a nice festive gift. Heartwood also does catering for events in Ukee & Tofino with a fairly wide range of dishes to choose from, as well as events held at the restaurant I went to an event @ Heartwood put on in October by the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce, which was a great success with food by chef-owner Ian Riddick & craft beer sponsored by Dennis Morgan, who owns the Ucluelet Brewing Company. On January 29, 2025 the Chinese New Year arrives, this coming one being the Year of the Snake, a year I share with my daughter-in-law. Heartwood may well offer something special & interesting on that night. Posted by S Fuller

Heartwood Kitchen is a favorite breakfast & brunch spot attracting both locals & visitors alike, with a line up often forming, especially over the summer months. It is a fairly small eatery — located on Peninsula, the main commercial street in the ocean village of Ucluelet on Canada’s west coast, a spot affectionally referred to by locals as Ukee — which is one of the reasons for the line-up but the friendly service is another certainly. The food is good too. Hours are from 8:30 am to 1 pm. We went as a family to celebrate my son’s birthday. I chose the Heartwood Breakfast, which is two eggs, any style, with smashed potatoes, two slices of toast and a choice of sausages or bacon, & some pieces of fruit @ 18$. Eggs Benny variations were a fav choice at the birthday table at around 23$ but also ordered was French toast with a side of bacon @ 5$. Bacon is a fam favorite so there were a number of bacon add ons. All five of us enjoyed what we had chosen, as we did our drinks, which included coffee, Baileys coffee & orange juice. Co-owner chef, Ian was there making sure everything was “smoking hot” with his daughter, Emma, helping at the service end in her summer holidays. The egg yolk coloured heritage building in which Heartwood is located is an eye catcher & it has parking adjacent to it, which is another reason it is a favorite brekkie & brunch spot. Heartwood stands out for many reasons. First: It is housed in a heritage building, which is charming in appearance & painted in a bright egg yoke color. Newcomers & visitors may ask on seeing it, what is that? The answer is it is one of Ucluelet’s popular breakfast & brunch places, serving breakfast all days from 8:30 am on through to 1pm, when it closes. It opens a few times for dinner & it offers catering services. Its staff — under the helm of co-owner/chef Ian Riddick — is welcoming & friendly & all the usual delicious brekkie & brunch dishes are on its fairly extensive menu. It also has tables outside for the warmer months, a happy result of creative thinking over Covid. Ucluelet, or Ukee, as it is known by locals, does not allow big corporate outlets & franchises, such as Starbucks, but that does not mean the ocean village is coffee shop deprived. In fact, it is full to the brim with cafes etc. serving coffee, tea, brekkie & brunches. Heartwood has since it opened moved more & more to serving meals mostly in the earlier part of the day, @ its location on Peninsula, Ukee’s main commercial road. It caters weddings & other special occasions, also interesting theater dining events etc. all frequently @ the wonderful Ucluelet Community Centre (UCC), at the corner of Marine & Matterson, which get rave reviews from most of those attending. Brekkie places open early across Ukee on Peninsula, on Marine, & on Main, mainly. Here is a useful list of early start options. First to open is the Gray Whale @ 5 am in the summer & 6 am other months. It is on Peninsula. Next small cafe to open is The Barkley Cafe @ 7am. It is also on Peninsula. Then The Break Cafe & Foggy Bean Coffee Co. (FBCC) both @ 8 am, with Heartwood @ 8:30 am. Plant-based Yayu opens at 9pm then going to 3 pm. The BlackBerry Cove — opens @ 10 am to 6 pm — sells FBCC drip coffee & packs of its beans for home use. It is on Main. Thay Teas is also an early option with bevs & eats, & here, & as its name implies, the focus is on its wide range of teas, which it also ships. FBCC, as a roaster, also supplies to other places in Ukee & beyond. Its serving window is also in a charming eye-catching building. In fact, come to that Ukee is filled with great buildings, quaint & very contemporary, commercial, community & residential. On Marine @ The Black Rock @ its Currents, breakfast begins early, all days, serving brunch on weekends. Ukee rocks with its many culinary options, its great buildings, specular scenery, and so much more. Posted by S Fuller

Heartwood Kitchen is popular for good reason. It is conveniently located on Ucluelet’s commercial main road, Peninsula, in a quaint heritage building; it is open for breakfast, brunch & lunch; & it offers delicious feasts at events through its catering arm. It also caters events inTofino, Ucluelet’s ocean village neighbor 26 miles north of the place locals affectionately call Ukee. I attended a function hosted by Heartwood’s co-owner & chef, Ian put on for the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce. It was a very tasty tour de force with Ian serving up one tasty morsel after another. He is the perfect host. The catering menu offers significant choice, in price, & fare, & it caters for events across the spectrum. Posted by S Fuller

Heartwood provided drop and go catering services for our wedding, which we hosted at our cabin. Communication with Ian was great, and he was willing to take any special requests and adjust the menu as requested for our tastes. The food was absolutely amazing, the presentation was beautiful. They set up in like 10 minutes, and all we had to do was put our dishes in a bin that they came and picked up the next morning. Would definitely recommend

Heartwood will this new year of 2023 again, as it has in past years, ring in the New Year with its popular & much anticipated Chinese TakeOut this coming 1/1. It opens this innovative festive feasting mode at 2 pm, serving Chinese food by weight in the customary Chinese containers until food runs out, usually around 6 pm, as was the case last year. It has proven to be very popular over the years since Heartwood inaugurated this novel way of feeding its customers, so best to get there as early as possible, if one wishes to partake. Heartwood is still finalizing all the details but the Chinese punnets are likely to cost around 15$ each. I love the idea & even hearing about it refreshes the palate, which may be turkey-ed out after a holiday season where turkeys are the Langue Franca of Xmas cuisine. Other days Heartwood serves Breakfast, Brunch & Lunch, then closing until evening when it opens for dinner. Chef & Co-owner Ian & his staff are welcoming & accommodating. Three years ago, ahead of a visit out to see my Ucluelet family, I enquired about whether Heartwood made latkes for Hanukkah. He said not but to pop by & we could talk about perhaps making some for me & my family. Things intervened & our talk never happened. I was then delighted to find that with the Turkey dinner my family ordered for takeou, Ian had tucked in some complimentary latkes. What a man. That was the December month before we started learning about what was to become known as Covid 19. I wrote my first TA review about Heartwood, given Ian’s generous latke gesture, good food & great service & thus the start of my then writing to help support people in the hospitality industry over that awful time with government restrictions etc. Three years on & again I look forward to his NY Chinese TakeOut. I like this culinary innovation for many reasons, one of which is that it also signals the Chinese New Year is coming, given that it occurs in the very early months of the January to December year. Heartwood is also an eatery member of the west coast culinary food to table guild — Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild (TUCG) which promotes healthy eating & healthy relations between food producers, restaurants & consumers. I like supporting TUCG & all those who support it. Posted by S Fuller.

Heartwoods, in the specular ocean village of Ucluelet, aka Ukee to locals, is again offering its popular NYD Chinese fare to go from 2pm to 6pm on January 1. I love this culinary experience for many reasons, one of them being the way it bridges the one new year to the other. This year the other New Year, the Chinese NY, — and in 2024, The Year of the Dragon —- begins a month later on February 10. Food is always good at Heartwoods, and the Chinese fare to go very well priced, sold by weight and delicious Posted by S Fuller

I arrived at Heartwood Kitchen for 12:30PM, to grab some lunch before they closed at 1PM. The service was very good, in a cozy little house converted to restaurant. I ordered the Ukee Fried Chicken Benny for $25 and it was fantastic! The eggs were cooked to perfection, the potatoes were crispy and delicious, and the chicken was very good, but would have appreciated a bit more crispiness to it. The coffee was good, and the coffee top-ups came at the right time. I highly recommend Heartwood Kitchen and especially the eggs benny.

Heartwood Kitchen Food Outfitters has one covered with its extensive hours. It is open from 8:30 am to 1 pm daily for breakfast, brunch & lunch, & for dinner from 5 to 9 pm from Tuesday to Saturday. And then there is its good food & imaginative & fairly extensive offerings. One such offering is its Shipwreck Sandwich at 18$. It has an extra lift with its hot sauce & sweet pickles, & is accompanied by smash-browns. Great with its beer offered on tap at 8$ a sleeve. It is a fairly extensive menu so lots to choose from. It's a small restaurant that is big on quality food and service. Ingredients were fresh and came through with beautifully tasty bacon/ eggs/ bennies. Our server was kind and checked on us regularly. We had to wait 20 minutes to get in on a March Break Sunday (arrived just after 11 am) but it was totally worth it. Limited table seating inside and on porch. Wish we came for dinner as well. Free street parking. Used to be a cottage so there are stairs up the porch.

My wife and I had dinner at Heartwood on a rainy October evening. We went early because seating was limited and we wanted to ensure that he had a table. We arrived just after opening and were the first customers. Our vaccination cards were checked after we were seated and a very pleasant waitress explained the menu. I wanted scallops in particular so ordered the scallops which would be served on a bed of rice. My wife ordered the halibut. We also order crab cakes to start. The crab cakes were excellent and had a crusty exterior over a mixture of smoky salmon and crab. It was really different but had a great flavour. The scallops when they came were a disappointment. There were only four small seared scallops. The flavour was excellent but I was totally unimpressed with the size of the serving and the number of scallops. My wife's one piece of halibut was flavourful but undersized. Over all the food tasted good but the portions were disappointing and did not equate with the price.

Brienbut, Please check your comments on price, do you have any idea how much food prices have increased? It is not 1999 anymore and to be honest the scallop dish will probably have to go because it is almost like we are serving it at cost. I insist you go and by 4 scallops and shoot me a note to let me know how that went for you. Sorry, maybe I am just grumpy because consumers that are complaining about prices have no idea what they are talking about. We price our menu fair, pay our amazing staff well and in the end nobody is getting rich here I assure you. Honestly this is what you think? "portions were disappointing and did not equate with the price" what kind of buying power do you think a 16 seat restaurant has? Trust me when I call up the scallop and Halibut fishermen they aren't bending over backwards to cut their pricing so you can pay the same price as you did 20 years ago. I think everyone involved deserve to be paid for their efforts don't you? Ian

The service was so fast, the staff friendly. The breakfast was amazing and very reasonably priced and the coffee was hot. We had a full breakfast which included 3 very tasty sausages, 2 poached eggs, roasted potatoes, toast and jam and a side of fresh fruit. The fruit just finished it off.

The service was extremely fast and super friendly, the food was beyond yummy. I had the Ukee fried chicken and French toast. The chicken was boneless and was the best fried chicken I have ever had in my life. Light batter, seasoned perfectly, not greasy and juicy inside. The French toast was obviously home made bread. Hubby had the heartwood breakfast, huge amount of beautiful bacon . Fresh cut fruit was perfect. You can see the cook perfectly from your table and he prepped the fruit as he went for each plate and the presentation on the plate was like a 5 star restaurant.

Heartwood Kitchen Food Outfitters will still be fitting out Ucluelet dwellers with takeaway Chinese food this New Year’s Day coming up, as it has been doing every year since it opened. This yearly offering on the first day of the calendar year has always proved very popular & it is likely it will be even more so this year as it is a delicious option in a time where restaurant takeout is the new “normal”. Heartwood is experienced in festive takeout & is bound to pull it off again this year with aplomb with owner/chef Ian & sous chef Nick at the helm. There will be a few changes this time around for safely reasons, such as no longer selling food by weight, as it has in past years, instead for health reasons offering ready made up containers of Chinese favourites, which customers can select from to make up their meal at home. Plans are still in the making but likely each container will cost around 15$ each, so four containers at 60$ will provide a nice array of foods for a group of four. Many other dinning details are on hold until restaurants know of travel & dinning restrictions for this festive season. As its website says - hours are all over the place now, given the times, so best to call in before for its hours. Takeout business has happily been fairly brisk but, of course, dine-in has been quiet, given the circumstances. Dine-in or takeout one is always assured of good food & great service at Heartwood. What better way to ring in the new year than with Chinese food from Heartwood, while contemplating the upcoming Chinese New Year, which hopefully will bring with it a safe vaccination programme, so we can all get back to something close to the old normal.
