Restaurants which take young diners seriously have always impressed me.
My experience dinning with my family at Pluvio — my son, daughter-in-law & two grandchildren, nine & 13 —in Ucluelet — the ocean village on Canada’s West Coast — showed Pluvio was one such restaurant....Now Pluvio has a special three-course menu for those 12& under, ending with the sublime sticky toffee pudding.
Pluvio — well-known for its adventurous culinary endeavors; its commitment to the local; creative decor and linguistic turns — does not just call it the “Kids Menu” but rather a menu for “Little Pluviophiles “ indicating with that they see children as important guests.
It starts with a cheese waffle dish, has a choice of short ribs or a scallop dish, as the main,& then that glorious ending of sticky toffee, a favourite from childhood well into adulthood.
It is 40$ for the trio.
Pluvio has a three-course menu for adults at 85$ — with many choices in each category of “beginning”, “middle” & ending.
It also offers a five-course menu for 160$ with wine pairings, & 105$ for just the food.
It has a good wine, beer & cocktail list.
Pluvio is owned by a husband & wife team, with Warren in the kitchen & Lily at the front end.
Reservations are key to getting in to experience this wonderful combination of great food, exceptional service & wonderful surroundings.
It is open daily from 5:30 pm to 9pm.
It also has a few rooms attached, which, too, have a booking system.
I took my very young son to what was then, arguably, the best Italian restaurant in Cape Town, located in the ocean neighborhood of Sea Point. Its owner/chef Poggi, a culinary legend, & who gave his name to the restaurant, came out of the kitchen to serve the Spaghetti Bolognese my son had ordered — & then proceeded to show him the perfect Italian way to eat those tricky, long Italian noodles.
After that great eating experience, given with care & respect, my son remains a big fan of Spaghetti Bolognese.
Like anything, talents & abilities need to be nurtured early. Educating children’s palates is a noble endeavor.
