This is a small but wonderful place which is bursting with atmosphere and good cheer the moment you enter. It's usually very busy but, if you can get a seat, there are newspapers and magazines to read as well as all sorts of interesting stuff on the walls and counter. The young owners/staff are all action and at once make... More

The whole experience was fantastic. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly without being overbearing and advised us to have the taster cake plate as we couldn't choose between the wonderful selection of home made cakes. We were presented with six huge slabs of some of the best cake I have ever eaten and a lovely pot of tea to... More

A great vegetarian cafe with high quality home cooked food in an intimate and friendly atmosphere. You turn up hoping that there is a table available as there is no booking and you are treated to very tasty food.

We happened upon Rattle Gill while looking for a light lunch in Ambleside, and it was perfect. Lots of great options (hard to choose!) and a lovely intimate ambience - only room for about 20 inside, plus the outdoor option - with charming and amusing owners. It's clearly a place where locals in the know go, which is always a... More

Such a great small and friendly place. To quality home made food and happy friendly service. Nothing is too much trouble. We wanted to go back again but it was closed for the week. Everything we had was fresh and tasty (veggie chilli, panini and soup)

Visiting Ambleside with friends we came across this great little cafe by accident. Not realising it was vegetarian food until we sat down and read the menu we decided to stay and order. Thank goodness we did. It was the most tastiest lunch we have had. Toasted cheese and chutney sandwich, homemade mushroom and lentil soup - fantastic. Feta cheese... More

This is the best cafe in Ambleside. TT has been eating here e very visit and it always hits the mark. The change of ownership has kept the tradition. Really tasty soup, sandwiches, cakes and drinks. It is simply a must - end of. Just go and enjoy.

My wife and I happened upon this café by chance and were very pleasantly surprised. We recommend the sponge cakes especially. Although a small café, it was popular and we sat outside by the stream. The local road cycling club turned up and a fell runner we had met the day before on the Fairfield Horseshoe. A lovely place to... More
