I have been visiting Romneys since 2012 and am always satisfied with everything they provide. Their carvery is good value for money, they offer a good selection of wine and beer (wish they would bring back the UK wines they once sold) and service is always good. Recently there's been a bit of a slide in the staffing but I guess that is to be expected. Waitresses used to be chatty, friendly and personable with added to the unique personality of Romneys. Now they are efficient, quick but lacking in that extra, wow factor that a seasoned server or waiter/waitress brings to a restaurant. During our most recent incident where they made a mistake with my order (they forgot to add blue cheese) my server insisted she take my burger to the kitchen to "prove" to the chef he had got the order wrong. I said no need, it's not important who was wrong, just bring me some blue cheese on a plate (I had started eating) she ignored me and took my plate away. This at least made the visit memorable, my 2 sons who were with me enjoyed eating their meals in front of me while I sat waiting for the return of "the evidence".

My husband and I recently had a lovely stay here for our anniversary. It was a very nice and comfortable accommodation to the front of the main building itself. It had many thoughtful and quirky features and a view overlooking the hills, which was enticing enough to encourage us to walk to and climb Helm hill for a stunning panoramic view. All the staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful with any requests or enquiries we made. Despite being in the perfect location to discover local restaurants we ended up enjoying something new on the menu every night here as the food and atmosphere was so good. The place is clearly popular and was very busy every night, (so we would strongly advise booking a table during busy periods), despite this the team were very kind to accommodate us every evening. Even during one particularly busy evening all the staff remained cheery and professional (A special mention to Sarah for making us so welcome and so expertly keeping many merry and demanding patrons happy). The other guests at the restaurant were a very diverse mix of locals and visitors, young and old, singles, couples and families which added to the welcoming and pleasant atmosphere.

We stayed in the Stables for one night and ordered a roast dinner for 4 adults for 8.00pm. Fabulous service, the waitress knocked on our door @ 8.00pm to see if we were ready, and it was promptly delivered 10 mins later, piping hot. Have to say that the 4 of us really enjoyed our meals and I would go so far to say that it was one of the best roast dinners we have had over the years. Thanks to Sarah, who sorted us out with the accommodation, wi fi and the remote control. We had a relaxing stay in the Stables for a family of 8, including 4 kids under the age of 10, who made the most of the on site playground. Good location for getting to and from the main roads and had a really good atmosphere - many thanx.

We visited on Thursday as we were staying in the area and bumped into a few locals that recommended the place. Covid restrictions were ok. We asked about track and trace and they mentioned if you have booked, we have taken you number so you don’t need to do it online. Salt and pepper were on the table (not sure if this is meant to be allowed during Covid times or if they are sanitised). We order the chicken supreme and the steak. Chicken was bland and salty - No flavour. Steak was not great. Felt like more of a Harvester. I ordered the local Cumberland IPA.. it felt like I was drinking a warm drink rather than a refreshing cold pint. Wife ordered Coke, she got served Pepsi. Waiter did not clarify they only did Pepsi. Would’nt recommend if around the area!

Thank you for your review, We have in place all covid precautions appropriate at the time following the government guidelines. There is a sign outside the entrance advising of the regulations/precautions currently in place, a hand sanitising station inside the entrance, a sign on the main door advising of a one way system in place and that everybody should wait at the door to be seated by a member of staff, on the back of this door is a sign displaying "no exit" and to exit by the doors by the play area. If a table has not been booked in advance then details of the guests will be taken for our track and trace reporting. All tables are spaced appropriately and are sanitised between each use. We try our best to remind guests of the precautions in place when we see that they are not being followed, but are not always able to remind each one in time. Our staff are only human and the response received from some guests when reminded of the precautions has not been nice. All reviews are appreciated and we understand that each review reflects that individual persons experience at any given point.

We walked in (there was two of us), we got stared at and one of us got a personal “have you sanitised” by the lady behind the bar (we had already sanitised as we walked in). We then got seated at a windowsill that was classed as a table, the woman who came to take our drinks order was not wearing any PPE and didn’t know a thing of social distancing as she was stood very close to us. The tables all seemed very crammed in and didn’t feel as they were 1metre apart. Starter arrived very quickly, it was ok. The mains arrived minutes after and was just chucked on the table we didn’t have chance to ask for any sauces before she ran off. I had the lasagna it was average I did feel abit like a microwaved meal, my friend that the chicken burger and she found it was very soggy. We were in and out in 45 minutes and we didn’t want a dessert because felt rushed so we ended up going elsewhere for a dessert. The overall experience wasn’t pleasant, during a pandemic you’d expect some of the guidelines to be in place but we got made to feel very uncomfortable and will not be returning any time soon.

Came here with the family as a nice way to spend a rainy Sunday on holiday. Our waitress came over (I do not know her name as she didn’t introduce herself), took our order, and didn’t crack a smile once! We all had the carvery as that’s all that is available on a Sunday, and when the food came over it was a little disappointing. Even though my sister had asked for everything you could have on the carvery, mine came with peas and hers didn’t. My grandmother asked specifically for no gravy, but her plate turned up with much of it. The waitresses started clearing plates from the table when only 3/8 people had actually finished eating, which I found odd as usually the waitress waits until the whole table has finished eating to clear plates. When ordering dessert, 3 of us chose the apple crumble and one the creme brûlée. The Apple crumble was honestly the worst I had ever eaten and this was agreed upon by all 3 of us that had it. It was extremely bland, no cinnamon or raisins etc, just apple which was particularly disappointing for the price. The creme brûlée had not been torched on the top although this was not a humongous problem. I was going to mention that the apple crumble wasn’t great but neither of the waitresses that came over to clear the desserts asked how it was or if everything was ok. For a meal that cost over £200 it was overall what could only be described as disappointing. The service was only good from one of the waitresses that we saw the whole afternoon, the only one that smiled at us and said thank you. All of the other waitresses seemed to be down in the dumps. I do not recommend personally.

visited Romneys this evening with my family for a birthday celebration, after been sat we waited 20 minutes, before being asked what drinks we would like. the order for food was taken, i suffer a tomato intolerance, so asked if i could have an Agnes burger no tomato, and if i could have a mixed salad instead of fries, to be told yes you can have a salad but id still be charged for it weather i wanted fries or not. so fair enough i agreed, but asked that the salad wouldn't contain any tomatoes, to be told they couldn't do that as the salad already had tomatoes in, and no they couldn't make me a separate salad. what i eventually got was a dry burger with a scraping of blue cheese, a small hand full of half cooked par fry chips and a greasy onion ring for the princely sum of 14.95. luckily the rest of our party dont suffer food allergies or intolerances, so were satisfied with their orders. so after tonite i dont think ill be darkening Romneys doors again

Arrived for dinner at 5.25pm after booking a table . Waitress came to take our order at 5.35pm. There was a selection of sandwiches on the menu available until 5.30pm but when I tried to order one I was told I was too late. The hot pork was available on the carvery so it wasn't like it was a big deal! Carvery now served plated to your table no longer such good value. Have visited several times for food as have family in Kendal and always been happy but unfortunately felt let down last night.

We booked a table Saturday 4th of September for 7-15 pm for 4 adults and my 2 grandsons who are 7 and 3 it was for our 3year olds birthday get together when we arrived there we was told it was 20 min wait for placing food order fine they asked us our table no which they never gave us one and they didn’t know which table we was having all tho we had booked at for 7-15. The woman wearing glasses walking about with a clip board and attitude ( didn’t get her name) was very rude to my wife argued in front of other customers who was shocked with her behaviour so we was told our table wasn’t ready and didn’t know when it would be so we got drinks sat outside then this young girl was sent out by The woman wearing glasses walking about with a clip board and attitude to do her dirty work to say we had upset her and we couldn’t eat inside but we could eat outside. The women with attitude had already told us we could go somewhere else if we wanted it was too late in the night or we would have with 2 young boys it’s difficult they was hungry and would you believe it we got our meal at 8-45 outside the food went cold quickly. Also there was a couple who was waiting for a bowl of chips for 1hr this is not exceptable Romney’s used to be excellent at service and food but the food on the plates are smaller but the prices are hiked up looking at it there no better value than Weatherspoons and you get better service at weatherspoons I don’t like to complain but my grandsons was hungry and to wait for food for 1hr 30 min shocking I can safely I will not be going to Romney’s again it was so stressful and they didn’t sorry or asked us how are food was not professional

If you decide to avoid meat or like vegan food this is your right to choose and you are guided by the menu, indicating what is vegan or vegitarian. If you have a food allergy, say gluten, or peanut which is a health issue, not a personnel food choice, you are reduced to being a five year old child, as you have to ask which meal you can have. The staff dont know which meals are gluten free, so they trip back and forth to the kitchen to ask the chef. Why can they not label certain meals gluten free, ( which i understand is now a requirement by law ) and allow the customer to choose their food, vegitarian, vegan, nut allergy or gluten free, without the staff having to inform, every other guest in your proximity about your allergy.. I took the time to give quiet descreet constructive critism to the manager, who explained most of the meals are gluten free, you just have to ask before you order. So i explained that i may not wish to inform my eating partner of my allergy and would like the menu to state what is gluten free. I found myself appologising to the waitress for my uncomfortable nature during my procedure of, can you ask the chef if this is gluten free, can you ask the chef what desert i can have. And this then spoils the whole atmosphere and reduces you to feeling like a child, asking what am i allowed, infront of your peers. On leaving the premises i was informed, they will have a meeting with the chef and come up with a plan to help future customers. I thanked the lady, and suggested they offer two meals labellled as gluten free, so a customer could ask for these without allerting others to their allergy. I was told, we dont have a problem, generally as most people are happy to ask what they can choose. At this point i felt they had not grasped the point, which is, People who have a serious allergy issue have a right to know what they are eating, while also being discreet, But people who make a personnel eating choice, vegitarian or vegan for example, which woulsd not cause a physical allergy reaction, have there food choices labeled on the menu. Surely this should be the other way round. I had felt uncomfortable during ordering the meal, explained my issue discreetly during the meal, and decided i could explain no more, and left to catch up with my family who were already outside. The manager followed me outside and raised her voice, making a scene and demanding she was doing all she could. And stating i should not have left the conversation. I explained i wanted to catch up with my family, one of which was my 10 year old daughter, and go home. They cannot be bothered to label their menu, to safe guard against allergies, the staff cannot advise you, so you are reduced to being a child and asking can i have this one, or can i have this one. The meals, two of our three meals were good. One meal cost £14, the duck was bleading with no flavour, the broccolii and cauliflower were vertually still raw, and the potato was cooked beutifully. There is a lovely atmosphere in this Hotel and the staff try to help in which ever way they can. But the management managed to spoil the evening.

Hi, I don't normally respond to reviews but feel as if it is necessary to reply to this one. Firstly, I apologise for any embarrassment you felt for disclosing your allergy. However, to walk away mid-conversation, stating 'I give up' was not fair, especially after having seriously taken your comments on board. I had explained that we would be making changes to make ordering simpler for gluten-free people, and after thanking me, went on to complain for a second time, in a manner I wouldn't exactly describe as pleasant. We do not wish to limit gluten-free people to just one or two menu choices, as you suggested, therefore we have created a separate gluten-free menu, which can be discretely asked for. This will hopefully avoid any discomfort, as well as ensuring a variety of dishes to choose from. Kind regards.

Went after a recommendation, Sunday Roast, amounted to a cold carvery consisting of solid roast potatoes, turkey was mainly black, I ate most of the swede/carrot mash with some Yorkshire pudding and left the rest, when asked by the waitress was everything OK, I responded accordingly but to my surprise we was then approached by a Manageress (presumably) and told in no uncertain terms that no deduction will be made on the bill because I apparently ate most of it. I can only presume they checked the wrong plate or else they would’ve seen all the cauliflower, all the roast potatoes, most of the mash, all the peas, all the black turkey, some fatty beef and some Yorkshire pudding (so most of it) but I apparently should have raised my concerns earlier. I explained that I waited for the 1st opportunity when asked by staff so not sure when I should’ve highlighted my dissatisfaction? 4 of us with 2 disappointing meals. But the bad customer service suggests they do not rely on returning customers.

Been a few times, nice place but the service is terrible. Young kids who don't know what they are doing. In desperate need of a floor manager who actually manages. We were dealt with by about 8 different people, the foreign lady who took our order didn't know what food was on the menu and didn't know the difference between starters and mains. One main was forgotten about, waiter didn't think it was a problem that he brought 5 meals to 6 people so we had to ask about that. Basically we had to chase them for everything. Could be the best place in town if someone spent some time hiring/training/managing it.

Disappointed service was slow . I had Thai chicken curry tasty but cold . My husband had the chicken stuffed with mozzarella which was nice but the veg were inedible as not cooked at all rock hard . Brother in law had haddock which was bland . Waiter had no idea what he was serving and just dumped the plates on the table . No one asked how the food was . We asked for split bill but didn’t get one . Shame wouldn’t take much to make it so much better

It's a nice looking pub but won't be back in a hurry. Wouldn't normally leave a poor review but it was such a disappointing visit on both the food and comfort front. As a couple, we reserved a table and were seated squashed side by side which was very odd. It was extremely cramped bang against the wall, I barely had space to move my arms to eat my meal (and I'm quite slight). It was a high table with backless bar stools - so uncomfortable. The table wasn't quite as high as the bar so I was perched up too high which meant I had to hunch over. It made my lower back ache and meant you couldn't relax at all. The carvery wasn't self serve (I got 1.5 roast potatoes 😱) and it was overpriced, especially for the meatless option, compared to all others I've ever been to. Usually, the point of a cavery is you eat your fill and have that nice warm sleepy Sunday roast feeling and it was not filling on the veggie front. The food arrived lukewarm and quickly went cold while eating. The mash was the only bit that had any heat to it. We weren't given by condiments so my husband had to go and ask and we'd almost finished our meal by the time they arrived (and we ate slowly waiting for the condiments). Very slow service. The whopper Yorkshire pudding and sweet cabbage was nice but didn't make up for being cold. My husband found the meat to be dry also. So that is my little tale of woe 😂 I expect the made-to-order food may be better than the carvery (hopefully). If you decide to go, I'd recommend asking what the seating will when you call to reserve. That was the main gripe. My husband is in the military and works away so we barely have time together and this was just not how you want to have a meal with someone 😔

It took quite some time for the food to arrive, with five minute intervals between each plate arriving. One person in our group had to wait twenty minutes for her sausage and mash to arrive by which time half of us were almost finished. Dessert took so long to arrive we almost cancelled it. When the food arrived it was lovely, just very slow and never all together. The staff were all either clueless or just plain rude. One waitress was extremely snappy and made us feel very unwelcome. It’s the only time my grandmother has ever not left a tip. Overall very disappointing.
